Summary: In this study, we report the stereoselective synthesis of triptycyl sulfones with atropisomerism using a chiral phosphoric acid catalyst. The oxidation of a stereodynamic thioether controlled by the catalyst allowed selective access to enantioenriched triptycyl sulfoxides. Subsequent enantiospecific and diastereoselective catalytic oxidation resulted in overall control over the stereogenic C-S axis, with a stereoselectivity of up to (-sc): (+sc) : (ap)=94 : 6 :<1.

Summary: The combination of photochemistry and halogen bonding interactions has been developed as a powerful method for the synthesis of radical intermediates under mild conditions. This reaction has previously been limited to the use of aryl and alkyl halides as precursors, but now a new method has been developed for the formation of highly reactive vinyl radicals through halogen bonding. The reaction is tolerant to a wide range of functional groups, is stereoselective, and has potential for scalability. Mechanistic studies suggest the formation of vinyl and sulfur-centered radicals as intermediates, and computational calculations support the role of a halogen-bonding complex as the initiator of the photochemical transformation. Synthetic applications have been developed to expand the utility of this methodology.

Summary: This paper reviews the current advantages and disadvantages of using metal-containing nanocatalysts for deep chemical oxidative desulfurization of liquid fuels, as well as the process of oxidative biodesulfurization of oil. The preference for using nanocatalysts to oxidize organic sulfur-containing compounds in various oil fractions is evident.

Summary: Chemoselective oxidation of sulfides to sulfones has been achieved using metal-based tungstates as catalysts, tolerating a broad range of functional groups. α-Ag2WO4 and NiWO4 were identified as the most efficient and selective catalysts, completing the transformation in 1 and 2 hours, respectively. The success of the selective oxidation is attributed to hydroxyl radical and singlet oxygen as redox mediators.

Summary: The support of Schiff base catalysts on solid substrates, especially biocompatible ones, has become more important due to their incredible growth in chemical syntheses. In this study, cobalt-based Schiff catalysts were immobilized on nanocellulose and characterized by FT-IR, H NMR, EDX, and SEM. Among these catalysts, the one with a crown ether substitute showed superior catalytic activity for oxidation of sulfides. It is noteworthy that these catalysts can be recycled multiple times without losing efficiency.

Summary: This study found that sulfur groups in different sulfur compounds exhibit different behaviors during oxidation reactions, with some behaving independently and others influencing each other. The oxidation of conformationally constrained dithiane derivative also showed unique properties in the formation of different oxidation products. The exclusive formation of sulfones by permanganate is attributed to its special oxidation mechanism involving sulfur as both nucleophile and electrophilic moiety.

Summary: A method for the cross-coupling of S-aryl and S-alkyl potassium thiomethyltrifluoroborates with aryl and heteroaryl bromides is reported using photoredox/nickel dual catalysis. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions, providing benzylthioether products in moderate to good yields with good functional group tolerance. Additionally, a practical and improved synthesis of potassium thiomethyltrifluoroborates is described, offering access to previously undescribed reagents.

Summary: In this study, we developed a novel piezo-catalyst that can achieve excellent oxidative desulfurization of fuel at room temperature without the need for any oxidants. The study demonstrated that the CeO2/Ce2O3/NiOx nanocomposites exhibited outstanding desulfurization performance for both model and real fuels, and they also showed remarkable reusability. The investigation of the mechanism of sulfur oxidation revealed the involvement of superoxide radicals and holes, and the kinetic study confirmed a second-order reaction kinetic model for sulfur removal by the piezo-catalyst.

Summary: This investigation successfully removes sulfur-based compounds by a combination of absorptive and oxidative desulfurization processes using a series of novel Bi-based bifunctional photo electrocatalysts. The results showed that the catalysts had higher efficiency in absorptive desulfurization and better results in oxidative desulfurization. Among the catalysts, photoelectrocatalytic desulfurization performed best in dibenzothiophene removal.

Summary: Nanosized mixed tungsten-iron carbide (FeWC) was synthesized by microwave irradiation and used as an efficient catalyst for aerobic oxidative desulfurization. The catalyst showed high activity for dibenzothiophene oxidation under optimized conditions. The possible mechanisms for oxygen activation and substrate oxidation were discussed. The presence of FeWC in straight-run gasoline resulted in a significant reduction in sulfur content.
