Summary: Polymeric membrane-based pervaporation separation for desalination and dehydration has been studied using surface-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes. The hydrophilicity of the functionalization agents is critical for the construction of water-conduction pathways. Small amounts of functionalized CNTs significantly enhance the permeation fluxes of the membranes. PVA-CNT shows the highest performance for desalination, while ozonized lignin-functionalized CNTs are most effective for dehydration.

Summary: The structure, thermophysical characteristics, and pervaporation properties of composite membranes based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were studied under different film preparation conditions. The results showed that the supramolecular organization of the composite polymer film determined the preferential permeation of toluene and heptane in the separated mixtures. The structural effects were enhanced by deliberately selecting a different polymer component or introducing a well-dispersed nano-sized filler in the polymer matrix.

Summary: In the face of severe environmental problems and resource shortage, photocatalysis technology has gained much attention for its green and efficient advantages. This study successfully synthesized poly(dopamine)@carbon nitride (PDA@CN) nanomaterials and prepared composite nanofiber membranes with antibacterial and photocatalytic degradation properties. The results showed that PDA enhanced the visible light capturing ability of the nanomaterials and exhibited good antibacterial effects on E. coli and S. aureus. Additionally, the prepared nanofiber membranes demonstrated excellent photocatalytic degradation efficiency under visible light.

Summary: The study revealed that TEMPO-CNF/PVA suspension exhibits pseudoplastic fluidity and thixotropic behavior, with the viscosity affected by PVA concentration and interactions between cellulose fibrils and PVA molecules. The entangled network and hydrogen bond interactions play a crucial role in adjusting the viscosity of TEMPO-CNF suspensions.

Summary: This study focuses on enhancing the selectivity and permeability of two-dimensional graphene oxide (GO) membranes using one-dimensional carbon nanotubes (CNT) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). By intercalating CNT and cross-linking with GO and PVA, the separation performance of the membranes is significantly improved. The membranes exhibited high rejection rates and permeate rates after specific treatments and annealing. These membranes show great potential for practical water separation applications.

Summary: This study focuses on the chemical modification of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) groups to obtain new water-soluble polymers, named PVA(EDTA). The modified polymers showed enhanced sorption properties for heavy metal ions and good selectivity. The results demonstrated the potential of modifying basic commercial polymers with chelating agents for further applications in Polymer Enhanced Ultrafiltration (PEUF) processes.

Summary: Tailor-made poly(vinyl alcohol)-b-poly(styrene) copolymers (PVA-b-PS) for separation membranes are synthesized using reversible-deactivation radical polymerization techniques. These di-block copolymers have high molecular weight (>70 kDa), high PVA content (>80 wt%), and good film-forming property. They self-assemble in aqueous media to form micelles, which when cast on a porous substrate, result in thin-film membranes with higher water permeance than that of PVA homopolymer. The PS nanodomains within the PVA matrix act as cross-linking points, eliminating the need for chemical cross-linkers and acid catalysts. Thermal annealing further enhances membrane selectivity through improved microphase separation.

Summary: Encapsulating genetic material into biocompatible polymeric microparticles can improve gene transfection efficiency and reduce inflammatory responses. Factors such as the N/P ratio of PEI to DNA and PEGylation play roles in enhancing transgene expression and reducing inflammation. The study demonstrated the advantages of PEGylation and lack of porosity in microparticles for faster release of genetic cargo and decreased inflammatory response.
