The Ordos Basin, central China, is a large-scale Late Triassic intracratonic lacustrine basin, and in which the Upper Triassic Yanchang Formation comprises interbedded sandstones, mudstones and tuffs, representing deposits of a complete lacustrine life cycle. Based on observation of extensive well cores, various types of soft-sediment deformation structures have been identified in the lacustrine deposits of the southwest basin, including deformed lamination/bedding, load casts and flame structures, pseudonodules, microfaults, autoclastic brecciation, sand dykes, dyke-sill complexes, and sandy and muddy slumps. Liquefaction and fluidization of unconsolidated permeable sediments, together with brittle fracturing of semi-consolidated sediments, are the major deformation mechanisms that generated these structures. Both the scale and prevalence of the deformed sediments, as well as the geological setting of the lacustrine basin, suggest that seismic events (synsedimentary tectonic activity) were the main trigger to initiate deformation processes, although sedimentary overloading could also have been a minor localized trigger. Many volcanic tuffs preserved in both the primary undisturbed deposits and deformed sediments serve as support for synsedimentary tectono-volcanic activities that induced deformation in these lacustrine sediments. The deformation structures usually form vertical clusters of several different types, representing active syndepositional tectonic periods. Stratigraphic correlation shows three such deformation clusters to be widespread in the area detailed herein, and likely recorded three major tectonic periods during deposition. A thick extensive oil shale, with various deformation structures, also reveals another active tectonic period. These four intervals coincide well with the transition of the sedimentary architecture in the area, indicating four phases of most intense tectonic periods and their influence on lacustrine evolution.

Rapid gravity flow transformation revealed in a single climbing ripple

Jaco H. Baas, Jim Best, Jeff Peakall

Summary: This study demonstrated how sediment gravity flows can transform from turbulent to quasi-laminar plug flow using the geometrical characteristics of a single climbing ripple. The rapid transformation in rheological character of the flow over a spatial scale of hundreds of meters to several kilometers was evidenced by the analysis of ripple size, angle of climb, grain size, internal erosional surfaces, and soft-sediment deformation. This study highlights how detailed examination of small-scale sedimentary structures can elucidate the character of flow transformation.

The sedimentary architecture of hyperpycnites produced by transient turbulent flows in a shallow lacustrine environment

Luxing Dou, Jim Best, Zhidong Bao, Jiagen Hou, Li Zhang, Yuming Liu

Summary: Experimental research has shown that the presence of clay in sediment-laden flows promotes transitional behavior between fully turbulent flow and quasi-laminar plug flow, but most fluid dynamic interpretations of lacustrine hyperpycnal flows are based on concepts of fully turbulent flows. The study describes and interprets subsurface mixed sandstone-mudstone bedforms from the Upper Cretaceous Heidimiao Sandstone in NE China, recognizing six lithofacies and five lithofacies associations formed under turbulent and transitional flows. Transitional flows in delta-fed shallow lacustrine hyperpycnal flow deposits exhibit gradual dilution and deceleration, eventually transforming to turbulent flows in distal regions.

The Effect of Biofilms on Turbulent Flow Over Permeable Beds

Farzan Kazemifar, Gianluca Blois, Marcelo Aybar, Patricia Perez Calleja, Robert Nerenberg, Sumit Sinha, Richard J. Hardy, Jim Best, Gregory H. Sambrook Smith, Kenneth T. Christensen

Summary: Despite the growing knowledge on flow interactions at the interface of a turbulent flow over a permeable bed, little is known about the effects of biofilms on such flow. This study quantifies the impact of biofilms on flow over experimental permeable beds and finds that the presence of biofilms increases wall shear stress and friction velocity, but decreases after detachment. The results suggest that biofilms play a crucial role in modifying turbulence in aquatic environments and should not be neglected in flow and transport models over permeable media.

The mysterious grooves of Volcan Barcena: a review of the role of streamwise counter-rotating vortices during erosion by dilute pyroclastic density currents

Susan W. Kieffer, Eckart Meiburg, Jim Best, Joanna Austin

Summary: The paper reviews the observations of surfaces eroded by pyroclastic density currents and proposes the concept of "groovy instability" as a potential cause of erosive counter-rotating vortices. It suggests that a transition from erosion of grooves to deposition of dunes occurred at Volcan Barcena due to changes in flow dynamics. Attention is called to the need for incorporating boundary layer dynamics into models of PDC dynamics.

Determination of in situ hydrocarbon contents in shale oil plays: Part 3: Quantification of light hydrocarbon evaporative loss in old cores based on preserved shales

Weijiao Ma, Jinbu Li, Min Wang

Summary: The petroleum resource assessment obtained from laboratory tests on old core samples tends to underestimate the in situ resources. This study investigates the hydrocarbon loss and restoration by comparing preserved and exposed core samples. It is found that previous studies have severely underestimated the in situ hydrocarbon potential due to factors such as sample crushing and crucible waiting. A new restoration model is proposed to compensate for these losses.

Source of quartz cement and its impact on reservoir quality in Jurassic Shaximiao Formation in central Sichuan Basin, China

Shaoyun Chen, Yongqiang Yang, Longwei Qiu, Xiaojuan Wang, Erejep Habilaxim

Summary: Quartz cement is an important authigenic mineral in the tight sandstones of the Shaximiao Formation in the Sichuan Basin. This study analyzed the silicon sources of the quartz cement using mineralogical, fluid inclusion, and geochemical data. The results showed that smectite alteration and dissolution of aluminosilicate minerals were the primary sources of silicon for quartz cementation. Contributions from volcanic material hydrolysis and pressure solution were relatively minor. The presence of chlorite films inhibited the development of quartz overgrowths and had minimal impact on reservoir quality.

Summary: This study investigates 13 submarine seamounts in the southern Andaman volcanic arc and observes evidence of hydrothermal activity in one of the seamounts. The evidence includes plumes rich in dissolved gases, live chemosymbiotic organisms, and the deposition of neoforming minerals. Summary: This study employs an integrated depositional and sequence stratigraphic approach to assess the control of diagenesis on reservoir porosity of a hybrid-energy delta system. The study focuses on the Barik Formation in the Haushi-Huqf region of Central Oman, which represents a highstand system tract of a hybrid-energy delta. The assessments reveal that the reservoir porosity is controlled by various degrees of diagenetic processes, including mechanically infiltrated clays and kaolinitization of silicate grains.

Summary: Due to the lack of deep wells in the broader region, studying mud volcanic deposits can improve the geological understanding of the Mediterranean Ridge. In this study, biostratigraphic and geochemical analyses were performed on mud breccia deposits from five Mud Volcanoes in the central MR. The results indicate the origin of these deposits and provide insights into the source rock potential. Seismic data is also used to determine the distribution of major lithostratigraphic formations.
