Summary: This paper examines the impacts of COVID-19 on livelihoods, land access, and governance in rural and periurban areas of Sub-Saharan Africa. It highlights that crises tend to have a greater impact on citizens in developing countries, given their reliance on the informal sector and limited access to social protection programs. The pandemic has further exacerbated fragile livelihoods and inequality in these regions. The study also explores the specific vulnerabilities related to land access and the livelihoods of vulnerable populations, such as distress sales and increased land conflicts. The findings emphasize the importance of understanding how households respond to shocks, as it can affect their current livelihood assets and future prospects for recovery.

Summary: In sub-Saharan Africa, the level of concern about COVID-19 increases the likelihood of handwashing with soap under running water, with varying effects across different countries. However, the sustainability of frequent handwashing may be threatened by severe water scarcity in the region. A strategic approach to water management and supply is needed to ensure continued hand hygiene practices.

Summary: Sub-Saharan Africa will face challenges in accessing COVID-19 vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics due to limited manufacturing capacity. Collaboration with vaccine developers, pooled procurement of therapeutics, and local development of testing materials are recommended to address these challenges. This pandemic should prompt sub-Saharan Africa to build up its manufacturing capacity for vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics to better respond to public-health crises in the future.

Summary: Based on a survey of firms in 38 countries, including eight in Sub-Saharan Africa, this paper examines the impact of COVID-19 on businesses in SSA and compares it with other regions. The findings reveal that the pandemic has had a larger impact on SSA compared to other regions, which cannot be solely explained by sectoral composition and firm characteristics. However, businesses in SSA are more likely to adapt their operations to the shock, but lag behind in leveraging digital technologies, remote working, and e-commerce compared to other regions.
