Summary: This study evaluated the effects of nitrogen limitation and cadmium exposure on the photosynthetic parameters and lipid classes of Ankistrodesmus densus. The results showed that both nitrogen and cadmium had significant impacts on algal growth, chlorophyll a production, and lipid composition. The combined stressors had synergistic effects on various parameters, indicating their influence on algal physiology. However, the algae's photoprotective mechanisms effectively prevented photodamage.

Summary: The main aim of this study is to investigate the effects of combined nitrogen limitation and hydrogen peroxide treatment on lipid accumulation in Chlorella sorokiniana. In addition, the relationships between reactive oxygen species (ROS), Ca2+ and lipogenic genes were analyzed to study the regulative networks involved in lipid accumulation. The results showed that lipid content and levels of endogenous ROS, Ca2+ increased under nitrogen limitation with H2O2 added, and ROS level could affect lipid accumulation through lipogenic gene expression. The study provides an effective strategy to improve lipid accumulation in C. sorokiniana and offers evidence of the involvement of ROS, Ca2+ and lipogenic genes in lipid biosynthesis in microalgae under combined treatment.

Summary: Nitrogen limitation and starvation can increase the lipid content of microalgal cells but decrease biomass productivity, pigment concentration, and protein content. Three-day nitrogen starvation is a suitable strategy to produce lipid-rich biomass and causes changes in cell morphology. Saturated fatty acids dominate, making microalgae a potential feedstock for biodiesel production.

Summary: Microbial lipids can be produced from volatile fatty acids (VFAs) derived from organic wastes, and the lipid yields can be comparable to or even higher than those from sugars. The optimal culture conditions for lipid production were determined by adjusting VFAs concentrations, acids profiles, and carbon:nitrogen (C:N) ratios. This study highlights the suitability of using VFAs from wastes as low-cost carbon sources for lipid production in Yarrowia lipolytica.

Summary: The study found that cogongrass extract could potentially be used as a medium fortificant for microalga cultivation for lipid production and as part of a cultivation strategy towards the production of desired fatty acid composition for biodiesel applications. Additionally, this research may inspire new studies on alternative medium fortificants for microalga cultivation from various unutilized or waste plant biomass resources.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) supplementation combined with nitrogen limitation on the biomass, biochemical and fatty acid composition of three selenastracean microalgae. The results showed that IBA supplementation increased the biomass production and influenced the synthesis of chlorophyll and carotenoids. The combination of nitrogen limitation and IBA significantly increased the lipid content and provided valuable feedstock for various industries.

Summary: Our analysis revealed an increasing trend in phosphorus limitation across European forests from 1995-2017, with a negligible number of plots showing nitrogen limitation. The spatial variation in the rate of change in leaf N:P ratio was mainly associated with changes in N deposition and forest category, mean annual temperature, and soil C:N ratio. Overall, phosphorus is becoming more limiting compared to nitrogen, especially in broadleaved forests.

Summary: Microalgae, especially marine oleaginous diatom Fistulifera solaris, are promising producers of biofuel due to their high lipid accumulation. In this study, knocking down Tgl1 gene in F. solaris showed positive impacts on cell growth and lipid accumulation, but the effects were not significant in a two-stage growth system. Changes in fatty acid composition were observed, but comprehensive understanding of lipid catabolism is crucial for further improving lipid production.

Summary: Traditional metabolic models of cellular growth often involve an approximate biomass reaction, which doesn't take into account the variability in biomass composition. To address this issue, new classes of elementary vectors called elementary growth modes (EGMs) and elementary growth vectors (EGVs) have been introduced. These new concepts provide a better understanding of all possible biomass compositions and can be seen as unbiased versions of traditional elementary flux modes/vectors (EFMs/EFVs).

Summary: Microalgae are considered promising feedstocks for biodiesel production due to their fast growth rate and high oil content. This study investigated the biofuel production potential of Chlorella vulgaris, Chlorella fusca, Oocystis submarina, and Monoraphidium strain, analyzing the effects of nutrient limitation on biomass growth, lipid accumulation, and physico-chemical parameters of algal biodiesel. Nutrient stress increased lipid production and reduced ash content in microalgal cells, with the fatty acid profile being affected by the type of strain.
