Pregabalin poisoning: Evaluation of dose-toxicity relationship

Saskia J. Rietjens, Maaike A. Sikma, Claudine C. Hunault, Dylan W. de Lange, Laura Hondebrink

Summary: Pregabalin poisoning is mostly benign, although higher doses can result in more severe poisonings. Below 20 mg kg(-1), the majority of patients only suffer from mild poisoning. However, there are large interindividual differences in pregabalin-induced toxicity.

Comparison of capillary and venous blood sampling for routine coagulation assays

Lies A. L. Fliervoet, Wouter M. Tiel Groenestege, Albert Huisman

Summary: This study compared the use of capillary and venous blood sampling in routine coagulation assays. The results showed strong correlations and acceptable variations between capillary and venous sampling for most coagulation markers, except for APTT. This suggests that capillary blood sampling can be used as an alternative method for blood withdrawal in routine coagulation assays, particularly when venipuncture is unavailable or undesired.

Thrombosis pathways in COVID-19 vs. influenza-associated ARDS: A targeted proteomics approach

Summary: COVID-19 patients showed increased activation of endothelium, platelets, and coagulation pathways compared to influenza-associated ARDS patients, suggesting a potential link to increased risk of PE.

Describing Characteristics and Differences of Neutrophils in Sepsis, Trauma, and Control Patients in Routinely Measured Hematology Data

Huibert-Jan Joosse, Albert Huisman, Wouter van Solinge, Falco Hietbrink, Imo Hoefer, Saskia Haitjema

Summary: Neutrophils play an important role in the immune response, but their function and population can be altered in different disease states. We compared the characteristics of neutrophil populations in sepsis and trauma patients using data-driven methods and found that trauma patients had an inability to flag band neutrophils, which may be explained by their smaller size increase and higher nuclear segmentation.

Stability and comparison of complete blood count parameters between capillary and venous blood samples

Martijn J. H. Doeleman, Anouk Esseveld, Albert Huisman, Sytze de Roock, Wouter M. Tiel Groenestege

Summary: This study assessed the comparability of complete blood count (CBC) parameters between capillary and venous samples, and examined the influence of different storage temperatures on CBC stability. The results showed strong linear correlations and acceptable variation between venous and capillary measurements. Some parameters remained stable for at least 96 hours at 4 degrees Celsius.

Continuous infusion of cefiderocol in a critically ill patient with continuous venovenous haemofiltration

Julia E. Mohlmann, Matthijs van Luin, Esther V. Uijtendaal, Noel Zahr, Maaike A. Sikma

Summary: This study presents a case of using cefiderocol as continuous infusion to treat a critically ill patient with multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection. The results suggest that continuous infusion can achieve the desired drug concentrations for effective treatment.

Interference of bovine hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier-201 (Hemopure) on four hematology analyzers

Marinke W. Bronkhorst-van Der Helm, Floor Weerkamp, Albert Huisman, Elise J. Huisman, Henk Russcher

Summary: Hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers (HBOC-201) are used to bridge acute anemia when blood transfusion is not available or refused. However, HBOC-201 interferes with laboratory tests. This study presents an overview of HBOC-201 interference on four commonly used hematology analyzers and suggests treatment monitoring possibilities.

Routine Lupus Anticoagulant Sensitive aPTT Testing Can Prevent Unnecessary LA Testing

Bob Smit, Francisca Hudig, Jan-Hendrik Venhuizen, Saskia Haitjema, Maarten Limper, Rolf Urbanus, Albert Huisman

Summary: Although routine screening of the general hospital population is discouraged, a lupus sensitive activated partial thromboplastin time test (aPTT) can be used by medical laboratories to screen for lupus anticoagulant (LA). LA testing is laborious and time-consuming, while aPTT is fully automated and easily interpreted. Therefore, a normal LA sensitive aPTT result can be used to reduce the need for costly LA testing in the absence of strong clinical suspicion.

Quantification of emicizumab by mass spectrometry in plasma of people with hemophilia A: A method validation study

Anouk A. M. T. Donners, Laszlo Gerencser, Kim C. M. van der Elst, Toine C. G. Egberts, Moniek P. M. de Maat, Albert Huisman, Rolf T. Urbanus, Mohsin El Amrani

Summary: The study developed an LC-MS/MS method for quantifying Emicizumab and validated its effectiveness in the plasma of patients with hemophilia A. Results showed the method had a wide linear range, excellent accuracy, and precision, and can be interchangeably used with the OSA-based method.
