Changes in Plasma Levels of ADAMTS13 and von Willebrand Factor in Patients Undergoing Elective Joint Arthroplasty

Summary: This study investigated whether VWF degradation is enhanced in patients with ET. The results showed that patients with higher platelet counts had lower HMW-VWFM index and higher VWF-DP:VWF Ag ratio. Cytoreductive therapy increased the HMW-VWFM index and decreased the VWF-DP:VWF Ag ratio. In conclusion, an increased platelet count in ET patients is associated with enhanced cleavage of VWF, and cytoreductive therapy can reduce this cleavage and improve VWFM distributions.

Inverse Regulation of Confluence-Dependent ADAMTS13 and von Willebrand Factor Expression in Human Endothelial Cells

Summary: ADAMTS13 is a metalloprotease whose expression is inhibited by proinflammatory cytokines, potentially increasing the risk of arterial thrombosis. Factors associated with atherosclerosis do not seem to affect ADAMTS13 expression. There is a reciprocal correlation between the expression of ADAMTS13 and vWF in endothelial cells.

Characterization of ADAMTS13 and von Willebrand factor levels in septic and non-septic ICU patients

Summary: Clinical features, hemostatic laboratory parameters, VWF/ADAMTS13 axis, and ADAMTS13 conformation were investigated in critically ill COVID-19 patients at admission. The study found that an imbalance between high VWF antigen levels and normal or slightly decreased ADAMTS13 activity levels correlated with mortality, suggesting that these markers may reflect inflammation and endothelial damage rather than driving the thrombotic process of COVID-19.

Our study demonstrates that inhibiting ADAMTS13 with an anti-ADAMTS13 monoclonal antibody can prevent the degradation of von Willebrand factor (VWF) and improve hemostasis in these patients.

Summary: COVID-19 is a global public health emergency with pathophysiological features associated with the activation of vascular endothelial cells, leading to coagulation and inflammation. The Von Willebrand Factor is a key component in the coagulation pathway and a mediator of vascular inflammation, potentially contributing to thrombo-inflammatory comorbidities such as ARDS in COVID-19 patients. Targeting VWF may be a potential strategy for managing these co-morbidities.

Comparison of capillary and venous blood sampling for routine coagulation assays

Summary: This study compared the use of capillary and venous blood sampling in routine coagulation assays. The results showed strong correlations and acceptable variations between capillary and venous sampling for most coagulation markers, except for APTT. This suggests that capillary blood sampling can be used as an alternative method for blood withdrawal in routine coagulation assays, particularly when venipuncture is unavailable or undesired.

Stability and comparison of complete blood count parameters between capillary and venous blood samples

Summary: This study assessed the comparability of complete blood count (CBC) parameters between capillary and venous samples, and examined the influence of different storage temperatures on CBC stability. The results showed strong linear correlations and acceptable variation between venous and capillary measurements. Some parameters remained stable for at least 96 hours at 4 degrees Celsius.

Routine Lupus Anticoagulant Sensitive aPTT Testing Can Prevent Unnecessary LA Testing

Summary: Although routine screening of the general hospital population is discouraged, a lupus sensitive activated partial thromboplastin time test (aPTT) can be used by medical laboratories to screen for lupus anticoagulant (LA). LA testing is laborious and time-consuming, while aPTT is fully automated and easily interpreted. Therefore, a normal LA sensitive aPTT result can be used to reduce the need for costly LA testing in the absence of strong clinical suspicion.
