Summary: The study investigated the oxidation and ablation behaviors of HfB2-SiC-Si/SiC-Si coatings under high temperatures, showing that the coatings exhibited good anti-ablation properties at 1800 degrees Celsius. Despite the severe corrosion at the nose tip, the protective layer composed of HfO2 and Hf-Si-O glass in the coating could withstand the scouring of the oxyacetylene torch.

Summary: The Si-Zr eutectic alloy was used as a high-temperature braze filler to join SiCf/SiC composites with C-f/C composites, resulting in the formation of SiC reaction layers between the substrates. Different interfacial microstructures were observed at the filler-C-f/C interface and filler-SiCf/SiC interface. The reactive infiltration process between the liquid Si alloy and porous substrates contributed to the enhancement of material strength.

Summary: SiC/MoSi2-SiC-Si coatings for nuclear graphite spheres with different Si-Mo ratios were prepared using a two-step pack cementation method. The composition, microstructure, and oxidation resistance performance of the coatings were analyzed. The addition of SiC and C powder in the pack cementation process effectively improved the oxidation resistance ability of the coatings.

Summary: To improve the ablation performance of C/C composite at 3000 degrees C, a ZrC-SiC-Si/SiC-Si double-layered coatings (ZSS/SS) was prepared. The ZSS/SS coating showed the lowest linear ablation rate of 0.53 μm/s in 90 s with a parabolic rate constant Kp (0.053 μm/s^3), attributed to good self-sealing of oxidation derived glassy. However, for long-term ablation, the Kp became worse (0.131) due to dominant mechanical denudation.

Summary: The phase transition of thermally grown oxide (TGO) has been proven to be an important factor affecting the durability of EBCs. Yb2O3 and Yb2SiO5 can react with silica to form silicate, which can reduce the TGO thickness and extend the lifetime of EBCs.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of different layer structures on the ballistic performance of laminated SiC ceramics. It was found that when used in conjunction with an armor system, laminated SiC ceramics with a gradual-layered structure had better ballistic performance compared to those without interface structure or commercial solid-state sintered SiC. However, when used stand-alone, the ballistic performance of laminated SiC ceramics was similar regardless of the layer structure, likely due to weak back support.

Summary: To reduce delamination or spallation of the Si layer during thermal cycles and enhance its oxidation resistance, a SiC-nanowire-reinforced Si layer (SiCnws-Si layer) was prepared on carbon/silicon carbide (C/SiC) composites using chemical vapor reaction and atmospheric plasma spray (APS). The introduction of SiC nanowires improved the bonding strength, toughness, and thermal stress relief of the Si layer. Results showed that the SiCnws-Si-coated C/SiC composites had lower weight loss (8.3%-60.9%) than Si layer after 12 thermal cycles between room temperature and 1673 K, and the tensile strength of the SiCnws-Si-coated C/SiC composites exceeded 3.9 MPa due to the bridging effect of SiC nanowires on the interface.

Summary: Slurry impregnation and gaseous Si infiltration were used to produce compact HMSS/SS coatings to protect C-f/C composites from oxygen corrosion at 1700 degrees C. The HMSS/SS coating with a mosaic structure can protect C-f/C composites for 276 hours at 1700 degrees C with only 0.99% mass reduction. The pinning effect of embedded hafnia and the presence of MoB and Hf, Mo co-doped Si-based glass layer contributed to the superior oxidation protection ability of the HMSS/SS coatings. This work provides a practical method for extending the service life of C-f/C composites in the aerospace industry.

Summary: This study investigated the low-temperature direct bonding of SiC/Si through O-2 plasma activation. After optimization, a high bonding efficiency of over 90% was achieved. Surface activation was carried out through reactive ion etching (RIE) O-2 plasma without causing significant damage. A smooth and void-free interface was observed, along with a significant amorphous oxide layer. By increasing the annealing temperature, the thickness of the amorphous layer decreased significantly. The mechanism of SiC/Si low-temperature plasma-activated bonding was discussed based on systematic experiments and analysis.

Summary: The effects of mixing mode of diamond particles on the properties of diamond reinforced silicon carbide composites were investigated. It was found that adding a small amount of fine diamond particles can enhance the thermal conductivity of the composites, while excessive addition decreases the thermal conductivity. The maximum thermal conductivity of the composite reached 469 W/(m K) under the optimal mixing ratio.
