Evolution provides a creative fount of complex and subtle adaptations that often surprise the scientists who discover them. However, the creativity of evolution is not limited to the natural world: Artificial organisms evolving in computational environments have also elicited surprise and wonder from the researchers studying them. The process of evolution is an algorithmic process that transcends the substrate in which it occurs. Indeed, many researchers in the field of digital evolution can provide examples of how their evolving algorithms and organisms have creatively subverted their expectations or intentions, exposed unrecognized bugs in their code, produced unexpectedly adaptations, or engaged in behaviors and outcomes, uncannily convergent with ones found in nature. Such stories routinely reveal surprise and creativity by evolution in these digital worlds, but they rarely fit into the standard scientific narrative. Instead they are often treated as mere obstacles to be overcome, rather than results that warrant study in their own right. Bugs are fixed, experiments are refocused, and one-off surprises are collapsed into a single data point. The stories themselves are traded among researchers through oral tradition, but that mode of information transmission is inefficient and prone to error and outright loss. Moreover, the fact that these stories tend to be shared only among practitioners means that many natural scientists do not realize how interesting and lifelike digital organisms are and how natural their evolution can be. To our knowledge, no collection of such anecdotes has been published before. This article is the crowd-sourced product of researchers in the fields of artificial life and evolutionary computation who have provided first-hand accounts of such cases. It thus serves as a written, fact-checked collection of scientifically important and even entertaining stories. In doing so we also present here substantial evidence that the existence and importance of evolutionary surprises extends beyond the natural world, and may indeed be a universal property of all complex evolving systems.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy: the need for adjusting experimental models to meet clinical reality

Frank Lezoualc'h, Lina Badimon, Hana Baker, Monique Bernard, Gabor Czibik, Rudolf A. de Boer, Thomas D'Humieres, Micheline Kergoat, Mark Kowala, Jennifer Rieusset, Gemma Vilahur, Maximin Detrait, Chris Watson, Genevieve A. Derumeaux

Summary: This study proposes a set of quality indicators (QIs) for assessing the quality of post-out-of-hospital cardiac arrest management across Europe, with the aim of unifying and promoting quality care. These indicators include 6 primary QIs and 12 secondary QIs, ensuring reliability and accuracy through scientific methodology and selection.

Caring for Patients With Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease: Dietary Options and Conservative Care Instead of Maintenance Dialysis

Kamyar Kalantar-Zadeh, Vincenzo Bellizzi, Giorgina B. Piccoli, Yunying Shi, Soo Kun Lim, Sumira Riaz, Rocio Urbina Arronte, Wai Pooi Lau, Denis Fouque

Summary: An expert advisory board discussed the prevention and treatment of CKD, with a focus on dietary options. The timing of dialysis start is influenced by patients' clinical status and patient-clinician interactions. Therapies that preserve kidney function, such as adjusting lifestyle and diet, can prolong the dialysis-free period and improve CKD management.

Spatio-Temporal Characterization of Brain Inflammation in a Non-human Primate Stroke Model Mimicking Endovascular Thrombectomy

Guillaume Becker, Justine Debatisse, Margaux Riviere, Claire Crola Da Silva, Maude Beaudoin-Gobert, Omer Eker, Oceane Wateau, Tae Hee Cho, Marlene Wiart, Leon Tremblay, Nicolas Costes, Ines Merida, Jerome Redoute, Christelle Leon, Jean-Baptiste Langlois, Didier Le Bars, Sophie Lancelot, Norbert Nighoghossian, Laura Mechtouff, Emmanuelle Canet-Soulas

Summary: Reperfusion therapies in acute ischemic stroke have shown their effectiveness, but inflammation caused by ischemia/reperfusion injury remains a challenge. This study used PET-MRI to evaluate the inflammation in a non-human primate stroke model undergoing endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) with neuroprotective cyclosporine A (CsA) treatment. The results showed chronic inflammation in the thalamus and a protective effect of CsA. The study suggests that individuals with significant ADC decrease in the putamen during occlusion may benefit from early personalized treatment targeting inflammation.

An OpenFOAM framework to model thermal bubble-driven micro-pumps

B. Hayes, G. L. Whiting, R. MacCurdy

Summary: Thermal bubble-driven micro-pumps are an upcoming technology that displaces fluid in micro/mesofluidic channels without moving parts. In this study, an OpenFOAM model for modeling and simulating these micro-pumps was developed and validated. The model agrees with experimental data and commercial computational fluid dynamics software.

Summary: This study compared the performance of a novel GFR equation (GFR(NMR)) based on serum myo-inositol, valine, and creatinine quantified by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy with validated CKD-EPI eGFR equations in patients with chronic liver disease. The results showed that GFR(NMR) outperformed other equations in estimating GFR and accurately stratified liver disease patients into CKD stages.

Monitoring of Hemodynamics With Right Heart Catheterization in Children With Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension

Summary: This study aims to define the goals of repeated right heart catheterization (RHC) and evaluate the correlation between noninvasive criteria and hemodynamic parameters. The results showed that pulmonary vascular resistance index, pulmonary artery compliance index, and right atrial pressure were associated with adverse outcomes in pediatric pulmonary arterial hypertension. Noninvasive criteria accurately predicted the evolution of hemodynamic parameters, but some patients still had at least one at-risk hemodynamic parameter at second RHC.

SoRoForge: End-to-End Soft Actuator Design

Lawrence Smith, Robert MacCurdy

Summary: This paper presents SoRoForge, a software tool that integrates major stages of soft actuator design and fabrication, which are typically separate and require deep domain expertise. The tool uses implicit geometry functions to specify geometry and material distribution, a GUI-based software tool for interactive exploration of computational network representations of these implicit functions, and an automated tool for generating and displaying rapid simulation results. The data collected from human-interaction with this tool will be used for future automated soft actuator design based on high-level specifications.

Is the optimal Tmax threshold identifying perfusion deficit volumes variable across MR perfusion software packages? A pilot study

Alexandre Bani-Sadr, Mathilde Trintignac, Laura Mechtouff, Marc Hermier, Matteo Cappucci, Roxana Ameli, Charles de Bourguignon, Laurent Derex, Tae-Hee Cho, Norbert Nighoghossian, Omer Faruk Eker, Yves Berthezene

Summary: This pilot study evaluated the optimal Tmax threshold of two MR perfusion software packages by comparing perfusion deficit volumes to final infarct volumes. The results showed that for package A, a Tmax threshold of 6 s overestimated the final infarct volume, while for package B, a Tmax threshold of 10 s was closest to the final infarct volume. This suggests that different MR perfusion software packages may require different Tmax thresholds to define the ischemic penumbra.
