Summary: Amantadine is a versatile antiviral compound used against influenza viruses. It has been found to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 in vitro but is inapplicable for oral use in vivo. On the other hand, it is extremely efficient against the neurotropic Borna disease virus with a low oral dose.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of amantadine in preventing the progression of COVID-19 and its neurological sequelae. The results showed that the amantadine group had better outcomes in terms of disease progression, improvement in taste and smell, but no improvement in fatigue compared to the placebo group.

Summary: We conducted double-blind, placebo-controlled trials to assess the efficacy and tolerability of favipiravir in acute influenza. The results showed that favipiravir significantly reduced the time to illness alleviation and viral titers, but had inconsistent effects on alleviating symptoms. Further studies on higher doses and antiviral combinations are needed for treating severe influenza and other RNA viral infections.

Summary: This study investigated the efficacy and safety of amantadine as a treatment for COVID-19. It was a multi-center, randomized, placebo-controlled study that concluded early due to lack of efficacy. The results showed that adding amantadine did not increase the likelihood of recovery in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Summary: The high and growing placebo response rates in clinical trials for CNS indications present a major challenge for drug development. This study found that educating participants about placebo response factors through the Placebo-Control Reminder Script (PCRS) can help mitigate placebo response rates and reduce the number of adverse events.

Summary: This study found that adjunctive L-theanine, when combined with sertraline, showed better efficacy in treating major depressive disorder (MDD) compared to placebo. The L-theanine group demonstrated significant improvement in depression symptoms and a greater reduction in depression scores compared to the placebo group at weeks 2, 4, and 6. Furthermore, the L-theanine group had higher remission and response rates at week 6. These findings suggest that L-theanine is a safe and effective adjunctive therapy for MDD.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of voclosporin for the treatment of lupus nephritis, showing a superior complete renal response rate with voclosporin in combination with MMF and low-dose steroids compared to MMF and low-dose steroids alone. The safety profile was comparable between the two groups. This finding represents an important advancement in the treatment of patients with active lupus nephritis.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the impact of a personalised eHealth programme on patients' return to normal activities after major abdominal surgery. The results showed that patients who received the eHealth intervention had a 13-day earlier return to normal activities compared to those who received standard care.

Summary: This study suggests that palmitoylethanolamide can be an effective adjunctive medication in improving manic symptoms and clinical status in acute episodes of mania. However, further studies with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up therapy are needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: Circadian rhythm disorder is a significant risk factor for mental diseases, and the recovery of circadian rhythm function has gradually become a signal of effective antidepressant therapy. This study explored the efficacy of Sini powder (SNP) on depression by regulating circadian rhythm. The results showed that SNP had a positive impact on improving circadian rhythms in patients with major depressive disorder.

Summary: A Chinese American female experienced extrapyramidal symptoms after re-initiating lithium carbonate treatment for bipolar disorder. The symptoms, including upper extremity stiffness and restlessness, appeared shortly after starting the medication. This case report highlights the importance of recognizing the possibility of extrapyramidal symptoms developing in patients taking lithium regardless of treatment duration.
