Background: The analysis of the problems derived from globalization has become one of the most densely studied topics at the beginning of this millennium, as they can have a crucial impact on present and future sustainable development. This paper analyzes the differential patterns of globalization in four worldwide areas predefined by The World Bank (namely, High-, Upper-Middle-, Lower-Middle-, and Low-Income countries). The main objective of this work is to estimate the effect of globalization on some economic development indicators (specifically per capita income and public expenditure on health) in 217 countries over the period 2000-2016. Methods: Our empirical approach is based on the implementation of a novel econometric methodology: The so-called Toda-Yamamoto procedure, which has been used to analyze the possible causal relationships between the involved variables. We employ World Development Indicators, provided by The World Bank, and the KOF Globalization Index, elaborated by the KOF Swiss Economic Institute. Results: The results show that there is a causal relationship in the sense of Granger between globalization and public expenditure on health, except in High-Income countries. This can be interpreted both negatively and positively, confirming the double character of globalization, as indicated by Stiglitz.

Machine Learning Regularization Methods in High-Dimensional Monetary and Financial VARs

Javier Sanchez Garcia, Salvador Cruz Rambaud

Summary: Vector autoregressions (VARs) and their variants are standard models in economic and financial research, but estimating high-dimensional models presents challenges. This paper explores machine learning regularization methods as an alternative to traditional methods, finding that they perform better in forecasting and impulse response analysis. Regularization structures allowing for high-dimensional models outperform standard Bayesian methods in nowcasting and forecasting.

Is Europe on the Way to Sustainable Development? Compatibility of Green Environment, Economic Growth, and Circular Economy Issues

Simona Andreea Apostu, Iza Gigauri, Mirela Panait, Pedro A. Martin-Cervantes

Summary: Climate change and limited resources have led to paradigm shifts in economic, social, and environmental policies and strategies. Sustainable development and the circular economy have become global priorities. This research aims to explore the path toward sustainable development in European countries by examining the relationship between green environment, economic growth, and circular economy issues. The study analyzes specific variables such as energy consumption, GDP, emissions, and waste generation for 31 European countries from 2009 to 2020. The results suggest that certain factors contribute to reducing waste generation, while others lead to an increase. This study provides insights for economic policy measures to facilitate the green transition process and promote the circular economy.

Macrofinancial determinants of volatility transmission in a network of European sovereign debt markets

Javier Sanchez Garcia, Salvador Cruz Rambaud

Summary: In this paper, a two-step approach is proposed for conducting statistical inference in financial networks of volatility, focusing on a network of European sovereign debt markets. The static results reveal that southern European bonds, which experienced the most volatility during the European debt crisis, were not necessarily net transmitters within the network, contrary to intuition. Furthermore, it is found that targeting low inflation and low financial stress are the most effective monetary and macroprudential policy stances for achieving low volatility transmission. The dynamics of the model suggest that the central bank should adjust its targeted variable based on the time period.

A socioeconomic approach to the profile of microcredit holders from the Hispanic minority in the USA

Salvador Cruz Rambaud, Joaquin Lopez Pascual, Emilio M. M. Santandreu

Summary: This study examines the microcredit market in the USA, specifically in Florida, due to the large Hispanic population, which allows for generalization to Latin American countries. The objective is to analyze the profile of microcredit holders and their companies from socioeconomic and financial perspectives. The study utilizes multinomial logit regression to assess the relationship between borrower profiles and loan repayment punctuality or default. The significant variables are the borrower's age, positively affecting repayment, and the loan term, negatively affecting it.

Should gender be a determinant factor for granting crowdfunded microloans?

Salvador Cruz Rambaud, Joaquin Lopez Pascual, Roberto Moro-Visconti, Emilio M. Santandreu

Summary: Crowdfunded microloans are a financing tool that can empower women in both developing and developed countries. This study analyzes the impact of gender on microloans using a large public database from Kiva and multinomial logit regression analysis. The results show that women are the best borrowers in terms of loan amount, repayment method, and recruitment period. These findings are important for promoting financial inclusion and achieving sustainable development goals.

A gravity model to explain the flows away of football fans: A panel data analysis

Ignacio Perez Hernandez, Pablo de Frutos Madrazo, Beatriz Rodriguez-Prado, Pedro Antonio Martin-Cervantes

Summary: This study examines factors influencing away fan travel in a professional football league by using data from two seasons of the Spanish league. The results highlight the importance of distance, match day and time, and uncertainty about the visiting team's form. Understanding these factors can help clubs and competition organizers reshape their management strategies to increase away supporters' flow and club revenues.

Unraveling the relationship between betas and ESG scores through the Random Forests methodology

Pedro Antonio Martin-Cervantes, Maria del Carmen Valls Martinez

Summary: This research uses the Random Forests methodology to explore the relationship between the betas and 13 financial and non-financial variables for the stocks listed in the S&P 500 index from 2015 to 2019. The findings indicate that ESG Scores are the main variable influencing the formation, determination, and sign of betas according to the Relative Importance criterion. Additionally, there is a quasi-direct correspondence between betas and industrial sectors, with some heterogeneity observed across the analyzed betas. The utilization of the Random Forests methodology ensures the acquisition of relevant results by inhibiting plausible correlations between the variables considered.

Salvador Cruz Rambaud, Javier Sanchez Garcia

Summary: This paper focuses on subjective time perception in the context of intertemporal choice, aiming to analyze the consistency of decision-making based on a discount function derived from exponential discounting where time is distorted according to psychological traits. The findings of this research are highly relevant in explaining time-related behavior in fields such as finance, psychology, marketing, and sociology.

Inflation and systemic risk: A network econometric model

Javier Sanchez Garcia, Salvador Cruz Rambaud

Summary: This paper develops a network econometric model to examine the impact of inflation on systemic risk. The study finds a robust inverse relationship that is reversed when controlling monetary policy, indicating that the former effect is caused by monetary policy responses to inflation. It investigates whether this effect stems from overindebtness as in a Minsky moment, but no evidence supports this claim, suggesting that other mechanisms besides excess credit underlie this relationship. The findings presented in this paper are particularly crucial for understanding how monetary policy reacts to inflationary cycles.
