Moorings can have a detrimental impact on seagrass, fragmenting the meadows, resulting in the habitat degradation. To reduce contact of the moorings with the seabed we attached small floats along the chain of a traditional swing mooring and monitored the ecological impacts of this modified mooring, with reference to a standard swing mooring, in a seagrass meadow under high tidal influence. After three years, seagrass density surrounding the modified mooring was over twice as high as that of the standard mooring, with blade length surrounding the modified mooring also found to exceed that of the standard mooring. Seagrass-associated epifaunal species richness was twice as high surrounding the modified mooring compared to the standard mooring. Sediment composition was considerably finer at the modified mooring, indicative of increased disturbance surrounding the standard mooring. A simple modification to existing swing moorings can mitigate some of the impacts of moorings on seagrass meadows, whilst accommodating for tidal fluctuations. The scale of the differences observed between the mooring types demonstrates the susceptibility of seagrass meadows to damage from swing moorings. Given the ecological importance of these habitats, it is crucial that action is taken to reduce further degradation, such as that demonstrated here.

Summary: Marine construction is vast and projected to expand further by 2028. While it is one of the most extreme human modifications to global seascapes, its global extent compared to land remains largely unknown. This study provides a global assessment of existing and projected marine construction, serving as a critical baseline for tracking future marine human development.

An evaluation of the social and economic impact of a Marine Protected Area on commercial fisheries

Sian E. Rees, Matthew Ashley, Louisa Evans, Stephen Mangi, Emma V. Sheehan, Tom Mullier, Adam Rees, Martin J. Attrill

Summary: This study examines the spatial use and economic performance of a fishery before and after Marine Protected Area (MPA) designation over a 12-year period. The findings show an increase in vessels using static gear inside and outside the MPA post-designation, with a decrease in static gear landings but an increase in value, particularly linked to high value species like lobster. Fishing activity using mobile demersal gears within the MPA ceased in 2008, with an increase in effort outside the MPA. The study suggests that an integrated approach to fisheries management and marine conservation is necessary for sustainability.

Optimal fishing effort benefits fisheries and conservation

Adam Rees, Emma V. Sheehan, Martin J. Attrill

Summary: It is important to fully understand the ecosystem effects of all commercial fishing methods in order to manage marine environments effectively. While the impacts of damaging mobile fishing methods are well documented, less is known about the effects of static fishing methods like pot fishing. This study presents new evidence of negative effects from high levels of pot fishing effort on temperate marine ecosystems, suggesting a need for sustainable management practices in Marine Protected Areas.

Summary: The review highlights the importance of sourcing alternative sustainable protein sources and the potential for offshore aquaculture to overcome limitations faced by inshore aquaculture. Identifying juvenile and sub-adult movements to inform recovery strategies for a high value fishery-European bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)

Thomas Stamp, David Clarke, Shaun Plenty, Tim Robbins, James E. Stewart, Elizabeth West, Emma Sheehan

Summary: The European bass in the northern Atlantic has seen a rapid decline in spawning stock biomass due to high fishing pressure and poor recruitment. By tracking juvenile fish, their spatial ecology can be determined to implement fisheries management policies to boost recruitment. Additionally, the study found that juvenile European bass display high site fidelity, with coastal nursery sites being essential habitats.

Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management works-How switching from mobile to static fishing gear improves populations of fished and non-fished species inside a marine-protected area

Bede F. R. Davies, Luke Holmes, Adam Rees, Martin J. Attrill, Amy Y. Cartwright, Emma Sheehan

Summary: The Lyme Bay marine-protected area, designated in 2008, is an example of a whole-site approach to management for reef biodiversity recovery and protection. By excluding bottom towed fishing and allowing less destructive fishing methods, the MPA has shown increases in taxa and total abundance of fish populations. This approach highlights the importance of protecting a mosaic of benthic habitats through protection of sessile organisms in maintaining sustainable fisheries and conserving important species.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 led to increased unemployment and concerns about food security in the Caribbean region, resulting in a surge in fishing activities. Rewilding of Protected Areas Enhances Resilience of Marine Ecosystems to Extreme Climatic Events

E. V. Sheehan, L. A. Holmes, B. F. R. Davies, A. Cartwright, A. Rees, M. J. Attrill

Summary: MPAs are used to manage human impacts, particularly fishing pressure, and can help rewild degraded areas of seabed habitat. However, the potential for MPAs to increase ecosystem resilience from storms is not well understood. Extreme storm disturbance impacts on seabed habitats in MPAs can be significant and may provide insights into the ecological responses of seabed ecosystems to future extreme disturbance events.
