Vanessa Jaeger, Berthold Koletzko, Veronica Luque, Natalia Ferre, Dariusz Gruszfeld, Kinga Gradowska, Elvira Verduci, Gian Vincenzo Zuccotti, Annick Xhonneux, Pascale Poncelet, Veit Grote

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the distribution of energy and macronutrient intakes across eating occasions in European children from preschool to school age. The results showed that lunch and supper had the highest energy intake, while breakfast and snacks were dominated by carbohydrates. High-sugar content foods were consumed in relatively large proportions at breakfast and snacks. Snack intake decreased with age.

Bioactive compounds in childhood obesity and associated metabolic complications: Current evidence, controversies and perspectives

Giulia Fiore, Martina Chiara Pascuzzi, Elisabetta Di Profio, Antonio Corsello, Marta Agostinelli, Alice La Mendola, Chiara Milanta, Cristina Campoy, Valeria Calcaterra, Gianvincenzo Zuccotti, Elvira Verduci

Summary: Obesity is a common chronic disease in children worldwide and has a significant burden on society. Metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO) can occur in children from an early age, and new therapeutic strategies are being investigated. This review focuses on bioactive compounds and their potential benefits in treating obesity, including omega-3, docosahexaenoic acid, vitamin D, biotics, polysaccharide macromolecules, polyphenols, inositols, alpha lipoic acid, and bromelaine. The review highlights the most studied compounds, such as omega-3 and vitamin D, and explores the emerging interest in the gut-brain axis and its connection to metabolic health and microbiota. However, more research is needed to fully understand the efficacy and dosage requirements, especially in pediatric patients.

Nasal Cytology on 241 Children: From Birth to the First 3 Years of Life and Association with Common Airways Diseases

Cecilia Rosso, Federica Turati, Alberto Maria Saibene, Elvira Verduci, Emanuela Fuccillo, Maria Chiara Tavilla, Mauro Magnani, Giuseppe Banderali, Monica Ferraroni, Eugenio De Corso, Giovanni Felisati, Carlotta Pipolo

Summary: This study investigated the association between nasal cytology and the onset of common pediatric diseases in newborns and children. The study observed changes in nasal cellular composition from birth to 3 years of age and found associations between delivery method and nasal cellular composition, as well as between cytological compositions and upper respiratory tract infections, acute otitis media, and allergies. The study suggests that nasal cytology may be a tool for early risk assessment in the occurrence of upper airway diseases.

Micronutrient Deficiency in Children and Adolescents with Obesity-A Narrative Review

Valeria Calcaterra, Elvira Verduci, Chiara Milanta, Marta Agostinelli, Carolina Federica Todisco, Federica Bona, Jonabel Dolor, Alice La Mendola, Martina Tosi, Gianvincenzo Zuccotti

Summary: Childhood obesity is a serious public health issue, with children who are obese often experiencing deficiencies in micronutrients despite excessive dietary consumption. This review highlights the common deficiencies associated with obesity, their consequences, and the potential for supplementation. Iron, vitamins A, B, C, D, and E, folic acid, zinc, and copper are the most frequently deficient micronutrients. The relationship between obesity and micronutrient deficiencies is unclear, and the effectiveness of supplementation or weight loss as treatment is still limited.

Prader-Willi Syndrome and Weight Gain Control: From Prevention to Surgery-A Narrative Review

Valeria Calcaterra, Vittoria Carlotta Magenes, Francesca Destro, Paola Baldassarre, Giustino Simone Silvestro, Chiara Tricella, Alessandro Visioli, Elvira Verduci, Gloria Pelizzo, Gianvincenzo Zuccotti

Summary: Severe obesity is a major symptom of PWS, and controlling weight is crucial in the treatment of this syndrome. This article provides an overview of different patterns of weight control in PWS, discusses the mechanisms involved in obesity development and preventive strategies. Early diagnosis, controlled diet, regular physical activity, multidisciplinary follow-up, and hormonal treatment improve weight management. Surgery can be considered in some cases. Controlling weight in PWS is a challenge for pediatricians, and consulting different healthcare specialists from neonatal and pediatric age is important in preventing and managing obesity.

Glycomacropeptide (GMP) rescued the oxidative and inflammatory activity of free L-AAs in human Caco-2 cells: New insights that support GMP as a valid and health-promoting product for the dietary management of phenylketonuria (PKU) patients

Carmen Lammi, Carlotta Bollati, Laura Fiori, Jianqiang Li, Melissa Fanzaga, Lorenza d'Adduzio, Martina Tosi, Alberto Burlina, Gianvincenzo Zuccotti, Elvira Verduci

Summary: Phenylketonuria is the most common genetic disorder affecting amino acid metabolism. Early diagnosis and proper diet can lead to positive neurological outcomes. However, the restricted diet may cause oxidative stress in PKU patients. It is believed that mitochondrial impairment and oxidative stress contribute to the development of PKU. There is a potential correlation between PKU and the risk of developing noncommunicable diseases.

Barbara Borsani, Giacomo Biganzoli, Francesca Penagini, Alessandra Bosetti, Erica Pendezza, Veronica Perico, Elia Biganzoli, Elvira Verduci, Gian Vincenzo Zuccotti

Summary: This study evaluated the accuracy of commonly used resting energy expenditure (REE) prediction formulae for children with cerebral palsy (CP) and proposed a new population-specific method. It suggests using indirect calorimetry to assess REE in children with CP and proposes a new tool for REE assessment.
