The Carboniferous-Permian transition of the intracratonic Parana Basin (S Brazil) includes important evidence of the climate change, tectonics, and paleogeographic configuration of SW Gondwana. During this period, the Late Paleozoic Ice Age (LPIA) was in its final phase in the Parana Basin, producing a temperate-tropical climate through the transition to the Permian. U-Pb laser ablation ICP-MS detrital zircon dates and whole-rock geochemistry of rocks from the upper Itarare Group (Carboniferous) and the lowermost Rio Bonito Formation (Early Permian) in the southern Parana Basin are determined to characterize the sedimentary-dispersal patterns of the source area and glacial paleoflow. Geochemistry proxies suggest that the studied units experienced different degrees of weathering, with the Itarare Group's units forming in an arid environment. The overlying Rio Bonito Formation's units were deposited under hotter and more humid climate conditions. The Late Carboniferous to Early Permian units showed similar zircon-age distribution patterns, with a Neoproterozoic main peak from the Uruguayan Sul-Riograndese Shield. A lack of Mesoproterozoic sources in the studied samples indicates that this area of the Parana Basin probably did not receive sediments from the African side during the Late Carboniferous as previously described. This result suggests a more complex system in which ice caps and small ice sheets dominated the glacial environment during the Late Carboniferous in this segment of SW Gondwana. Paleogeographic evolution of the southern Parana Basin during the Late Permian and its relation to the Gondwanides

Henrique Parisi Kern, Ernesto Luiz Correa Lavina, Paulo Sergio Gomes Paim, Tiago Jonatan Girelli, Cristiano Lana

Summary: The end of the Permian in southwestern Gondwana marked a significant change in depositional context, with the last invasion of the Panthalassa Ocean and subsequent retreat, leading to desert conditions. This paper provides a detailed paleogeographic evolution of the Parana Basin's southern portion, showing a large regression with important facies shifts. The provenance zircon U-Pb analysis suggests sediment sources from the Brasiliano basement and Gondwanides mountain ridge, reflecting tectonic reorganization near the Permo-Triassic boundary.

Summary: The end of the Late Paleozoic Ice Age was followed by a period of global warming climate, leading to the deposition of diamictite deposits in the Mariana Pimentel paleovalley due to increased rainfall and slope instability. This transition was characterized by a decrease in physical weathering and an increase in chemical weathering, with debris flow processes transporting regolith from valley walls to the bottom during the intense rainfall.

Andean orogenic signature in the Quaternary sandy barriers of Southernmost Brazilian Passive Margin - Paradigm as a source area

Farid Chemale Junior, Ernesto Luiz Correa Lavina, Julierme Justin Carassai, Tiago Jonatan Girelli, Cristiano Lana

Summary: This study investigates the multiple source provenance of sediments and submarine fan formation in the Quaternary sandy barriers of the Brazilian Southernmost Coastal Plain. The analyses reveal that sediments from the La Plata River drainage system are the main source, with minor contributions from the Patagonia drainage and nearby sources related to the Uruguay/Rio Grande do Sul Shield.

Summary: This study presents an example of how coastal morphology in ancient coastal zones can control tidal range. By analyzing sedimentological and stratigraphical data from cores drilled in the southern Paraná Basin, the study identifies two third-order depositional sequences in the Lower Permian Rio Bonito Formation, showing changes in paleoenvironmental conditions. The study reveals how changes in coastal morphology can impact tidal and wave processes in marine marginal environments.

Summary: Through detrital zircon U-Pb-Hf analyses, it was found that in addition to the Precambrian South American cratons, the Andean orogeny is also an important source for Ti-Zr-bearing placer formation on the passive margin of southern Brazil. Distal sediments are also derived from the La Plata River system and Argentina rivers.

From the Andes and the Drake Passage to the Rio Grande Submarine Fan: Paleoclimatic and paleogeographic evidence in the Cenozoic Era from the South Atlantic-Austral Segment, Pelotas Basin

Marlise Colling Cassel, Farid Chemale Jr, Mateus Rodrigues Vargas, Marcelo Kehl de Souza, Tiago Jonatan Girelli, Gisela Serejo de Oliveira

Summary: The Cenozoic depositional history of the Pelotas Basin was influenced by the spreading processes of the Atlantic Ocean and the formation of the Andean Cordillera. The study integrated seismic interpretation and backstripping techniques with evaluation of spreading rates in the South Atlantic and subduction beneath the Andes to uncover the main climatic, eustatic, and active tectonic events in the Cenozoic. The results showed the tectonic control of the Andean Cordillera over the Pelotas Basin's passive margin, as well as the influence of climatic and glacioeustatic changes driven by the opening of Drake Passage and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.

Summary: Previous methods of using SDR-related magnetic anomalies as age constraints are not recommended due to their complexity and difficulties. The geometry of SDRs, variation in composition, and lack of direct correlation between magmatic position and age make the interpretation of the data challenging. Additionally, SDR-related magnetic anomalies are mainly caused by magnetic susceptibility contrasts. Therefore, this method is not suitable for estimating the age of Pelotas Basin SDRs.
