Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects 6% to 20% of reproductive age women and is the most frequent cause of anovulatory infertility. Its physiopathology may result in part from hypothalamic alterations in the pulsatile secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). The neuropeptide kisspeptin participates in the mechanism through stimulation of the hormone's production. The purpose of this study was to review the articles which compared kisspeptin levels in women with PCOS with those of controls. A systematic review of observational studies was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) recommendations. The selected studies encompassed a population of patients with PCOS and controls, whose serum kisspeptin levels were evaluated. The studies were retrieved from the Medline, Cochrane, and Embase databases, and four of them were chosen for the review. In most studies, the serum kisspeptin levels were higher in women with PCOS than in controls notwithstanding the BMI. One of the articles showed that circulating plasma levels of kisspeptin were significantly higher in women with PCOS whose BMI was lower than 25 than in obese and overweight women. Our data suggest a higher concentration of serum kisspeptin in women with PCOS irrespective of their BMI. Further experimental and clinical studies are needed to ascertain the role of kisspeptin in PCOS.

Validation of the Residual Cancer Burden Index as a prognostic tool in women with locally advanced breast cancer treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy

Juliana Pierobon Gomes da Cunha, Rodrigo Goncalves, Fernando Silva, Fernando Nalesso Aguiar, Bruna Salani Mota, Bruna Bello Chequim, Jose Maria Soares, Edmund C. Baracat, Jose Roberto Filassi

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between the Residual Cancer Burden (RCB) index and overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in women undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer. The results showed a significant relationship between the RCB index and the risk of relapse and death, suggesting the potential of RCB classification as a prognostic indicator.

Impact of hormone therapy on the bone density of women with premature ovarian insufficiency: A systematic review

Giulia Paiva Oliveira Costa, Edson Santos Ferreira-Filho, Ricardo dos Santos Simoes, Jose Maria Soares-Junior, Edmund Chada Baracat, Gustavo Arantes Rosa Maciel

Summary: Women with premature ovarian insufficiency have lower bone density compared to healthy women. Hormone therapy with estrogen + progestin has a protective effect on bone mass. Higher doses of estrogen and continuous use of oral contraceptives also have a positive impact. Interrupting hormone therapy for more than a year is associated with significant bone loss.

Could be FOXO3a, miR-96-5p and miR-182-5p useful for Brazilian women with luminal A and triple negative breast cancers prognosis and target therapy?

Daniele Carvalho Calvano Mendes, Carlos Marino Cabral Calvano Filho, Natalia Garcia, Marcos Desiderio Ricci, Jose Maria Soares Junior, Katia Candido Carvalho, Edmund Chada Baracat

Summary: The expression levels of miR-96-5p and miR-182-5p have been found to be upregulated in breast cancer, while the protein expression of FOXO3A is decreased. This phenomenon is more prominent in triple-negative breast cancer, suggesting the important role of these molecules in the biology and clinical behavior of this tumor type. These findings provide new perspectives for alternative target therapy options for breast cancer patients expressing both FOXO3A and its regulatory miRNAs.

PRL-R Variants Are Not Only Associated With Prolactinomas But Also With Dopamine Agonist Resistance

Andrea Ramos de Castro Moreira, Ericka Trarbach, Cristina Bellotti Formiga Bueno, Anna Louise Stellfeld Monteiro, Isabella Pacetti Pajaro Grande, Mario Padula, Gustavo Arantes Rosa Maciel, Andrea Glezer

Summary: In this study, six PRL-R variants associated with prolactinomas were identified, with two variants showing higher frequency in patients compared to the genomic database. These variants were associated with male sex, higher serum PRL levels, larger tumors, and cabergoline resistance. These findings suggest the involvement of the prolactin/prolactin receptor system in prolactinoma tumorigenesis and resistance to cabergoline.

Cardiac Behavior and Heart Rate Variability in Elderly Hypertensive Individuals during Aerobic Exercise: A Non-Randomized Controlled Study

Paulo Evaristo de Andrade, Juliana Zangirolami-Raimundo, Tassiane Cristina Morais, Luiz Carlos De Abreu, Carlos Eduardo Siqueira, Isabel Cristina Esposito Sorpreso, Jose Maria Soares Junior, Rodrigo Daminello Raimundo

Summary: The aim of this study was to analyze the autonomic modulation of heart rate in hypertensive elderly individuals during and after a session of aerobic exercise, and to compare it with elderly individuals without cardiovascular or metabolic disease. The results showed that after exercise, elderly individuals without cardiovascular and metabolic diseases had a decrease in parasympathetic modulation and global heart rate variability, but it restored within 30 minutes of post-exercise recovery. We concluded that there was no difference in autonomic modulation and global heart rate variability between elderly individuals without cardiovascular and metabolic diseases and hypertensive individuals after a bout of aerobic exercise.

Hormonal and Metabolic Factors Influence the Action of Progesterone on the Endometrium of Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Maria Candida P. Baracat, Edmund C. Baracat, Ricardo S. Simoes, Manuel J. Simoes, Gustavo A. R. Maciel, Ricardo Azziz, Jose Maria Soares Jr

Summary: Our study aimed to investigate the effects of hormonal and metabolic factors on endometrial quality and progesterone action. Subjects were recruited from an outpatient reproductive endocrinology clinic. Endometrial biopsies were performed before and after progesterone treatment, and metabolic and hormonal serum levels were evaluated. The endometrium of women with PCOS in the second phase showed histomorphometric abnormalities, which were associated with androgen and insulin levels despite progesterone supplementation.

Postmenopausal women's cognitive function and performance of virtual reality tasks

J. Zangirolami-Raimundo, R. D. Raimundo, P. R. E. Silva Noll, W. S. dos Santos, C. Leone, E. C. Baracat, I. C. E. Sorpreso, J. M. Soares Junior

Summary: This study aimed to assess whether prior knowledge of computer use determines performance of virtual reality tasks by postmenopausal women and whether menopausal symptoms, sociodemographic factors, lifestyle and cognition modify or interfere with their performance. The study found that postmenopausal computer users performed better in virtual reality games than non-users, and computer users experienced more severe vasomotor symptoms. Age, cognitive function, and headache symptoms were the best predictors affecting the postmenopausal women's performance in virtual reality tasks.

Vitamin D and in vitro fertilization: a systematic review

Ana Berquo Peleja Eller, Dani Ejzenberg, Pedro Augusto Araujo Monteleone, Jose Maria Soares Jr, Edmund Chada Baracat

Summary: This review aims to assess the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and in vitro fertilization (IVF) results. The selected 18 articles showed mixed results, with some indicating a positive correlation, some lacking any association, and one exhibiting a negative correlation. Non-Hispanic White patients may be more affected by vitamin D deficiency compared to Asian patients. Vitamin D levels may play a role in the follicular fluid levels and immune system, impacting embryo implantation and pregnancy.
