In this study we compared D-e results obtained from single-aliquot (SA) and single-grain (SG) measurements on potassium rich feldspars (K-feldspars) from the Nihewan Basin, north China, based on the multiple-elevated-temperature post-infrared infrared (MET-pIRIR) stimulated luminescence. Discrepancy was observed between the SA and SG D-e results. Potential reasons for such discrepancy, including residual doses, sensitivity changes, fading rates, internal dose rates, and/or the combination of these possibilities, were investigated. Our results indicate that the disagreement between the SA and SG D-e results are mainly caused by the different fading rates and, to a small extent, by the internal K contents variations of different grains. Our study highlights the importance to investigate the relationship of single-grain D-e values and the luminescence behavior of individual grains, such as brightness. For partial-bleached or post-depositional mixed K-feldspar samples, statistical analysis should be conducted only on the grains with the same fading rate.

Evidence for Middle Palaeolithic occupation and landscape change in central Armenia at the open-air site of Alapars-1

Ariel Malinsky-Buller, Phil Glauberman, Keith Wilkinson, Bo Li, Ellery Frahm, Boris Gasparyan, Rhys Timms, Daniel S. Adler, Jennifer Sherriff

Summary: The findings from excavations at the Middle Palaeolithic site of Alapars-1 in central Armenia reveal changes in human occupation patterns from ephemeral to more persistent during the last interglacial and glacial periods. Sedimentological and chronological analyses show three phases of sedimentation and soil development, along with differential artifact discard patterns and source exploitation. This suggests variability in technological organization during the Middle Palaeolithic.

Calibration of a QEM-EDS system for rapid determination of potassium concentrations of feldspar grains used in optical dating

Kieran O'Gorman, Frank Brink, Dominique Tanner, Bo Li, Zenobia Jacobs

Summary: Potassium-rich feldspars are commonly used for optical dating, but their internal dose rates vary due to different K concentrations. Quantitative evaluation of minerals using energy dispersive spectroscopy (QEM-EDS) is an efficient and automated technique that can accurately determine K concentrations in feldspar grains, improving the accuracy of optical dating methods.

Summary: Denisova Cave in southern Siberia is the type locality of the Denisovans, an archaic hominin group who were related to Neanderthals. The cave yielded hominin remains from different groups, indicating it was a contact zone between Neanderthals and Denisovans. The study reveals that Denisovans and Neanderthals repeatedly occupied the site, with modern human DNA appearing in the sediments at least 45,000 years ago.

Composite grains from volcanic terranes: Internal dose rates of supposed 'potassium-rich' feldspar grains used for optical dating at Liang Bua, Indonesia

Kieran O'Gorman, Dominique Tanner, Mariana Sontag-Gonzalez, Bo Li, Frank Brink, Brian G. Jones, Anthony Dosseto, Jatmiko, Richard G. Roberts, Zenobia Jacobs

Summary: This study investigated the potassium-rich feldspar grains in sediment samples from Liang Bua in Indonesia and found that the assumption of potassium and rubidium concentrations for dose rate and age calculation may be incorrect. It is important to consider the internal dose rates of feldspar grains with complex mineralogies to ensure accurate age calculations, especially in volcanic regions like Island Southeast Asia.

Bayesian analysis of De distributions in optical dating: Towards a robust method for dealing with outliers

Bo Li, Zenobia Jacobs, Richard G. Roberts

Summary: In this study, a Bayesian method is introduced to detect and account for outliers in single-grain optical dating, allowing for more accurate estimation of equivalent dose values for the target population. The Bayesian outlier model (BOM) is found to be effective in identifying outliers associated with undesirable luminescence properties or contaminant grains, thus improving the accuracy of final De and age determination.

Beta dose heterogeneity in sediment samples measured using a Timepix pixelated detector and its implications for optical dating of individual mineral grains

Xiao Fu, Anna A. Romanyukha, Bo Li, Nathan R. Jankowski, Terry J. Lachlan, Zenobia Jacobs, Stuart P. George, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld, Richard G. Roberts

Summary: Single-grain optical dating is widely used for estimating the ages of Quaternary sediments. Understanding the sources that affect the dispersion of equivalent dose estimates from individual grain measurements is crucial for accurate age determination. This study demonstrates the use of Timepix, a pixelated detector, to measure beta emissions and determine beta microdosimetry in natural sediment samples. The results show that the estimates of beta dose rate are heterogeneous, leading to overdispersion in the single-grain dose distributions.

Bleachability of pIRIR signal from single-grain K-feldspar

Ting Cheng, Dongju Zhang, Hui Zhao, Shengli Yang, Bo Li

Summary: The high-temperature pIRIR signals of feldspar are widely used for dating, but their slow bleachability and high residual dose limit their application. This study found significant variation in the bleachability of pIRIR signals among different K-feldspar grains from the same sample, which may introduce additional scatter in D-e values. The authors propose a method for quickly testing the bleachability of individual grains and suggest selecting easy-to-bleach grains for efficient dating of young samples.

Post-violet infrared stimulated luminescence (pVIRSL) dating protocol for potassium feldspar

Monika Devi, Naveen Chauhan, Ashok K. Singhvi

Summary: Devi et al. (2022) suggested that post-violet infrared stimulated luminescence (pVIRSL) of K-feldspars has a near zero athermal fading rate. This study investigates the mechanism and suitability of the pVIRSL signal for dating applications. The results show that pVIRSL is a recuperated signal resulting from the eviction and recapture of charges in deep traps by violet stimulation and subsequent infrared stimulation. The pVIR-SAR protocol worked well for dating seven K-feldspar samples from various depositional environments.

Snow avalanche synchronicity derived from a multi-path tree-ring reconstruction in the Fagaras Mountains (Southern Carpathians, Romania)

Patrick Chiroiu, Alexandru L. Onaca, Adrien Favillier, Mircea Voiculescu, Christophe Corona, Petru Urdea, Markus Stoffel

Summary: Snow avalanches present a constant threat to mountainous regions worldwide, and understanding past avalanche events is crucial for managing and mitigating avalanche hazards and risks. In this study, dendrogeomorphic techniques were used to analyze 17 avalanche paths in a small region of the Fagaras Mountains. The analysis reconstructed 174 snow avalanche years across all paths and revealed widespread avalanche occurrence in the study area. The study emphasizes the importance of investigating multiple avalanche paths in a small, homogeneous area to gain a better understanding of snow avalanche activity at both path-scale and mountain range-scale.
