Exogenous testosterone increases status-seeking motivation in men with unstable low social status

Testosterone is associated with status-seeking behaviors such as competition, which may depend on whether one wins or loses status, but also on the stability of one's status. We examined (1) to what extent testosterone administration affects competition behavior in repeated social contests in men with high or low rank, and (2), whether this relationship is moderated by hierarchy stability, as predicted by the status instability hypothesis. Using a real effort-based design in healthy male participants (N = 173 males), we first found that testosterone (vs. placebo) increased motivation to compete for status, but only in individuals with an unstable low status. A second part of the experiment, tailored to directly compare stable with unstable hierarchies, indicated that exogenous testosterone again increased competitive motivation in individuals with a low unstable status, but decreased competition behavior in men with low stable status. Additionally, exogenous testosterone increased motivation in those with a stable high status. Further analysis suggested that these effects were moderated by individuals' trait dominance, and genetic differences assessed by the androgen receptor (CAG-repeat) and dopamine transporter (DAT1) polymorphisms. Our study provides evidence that testosterone specifically boosts status-related motivation when there is an opportunity to improve one's social status. The findings contribute to our understanding of testosterone's causal role in status-seeking motivation in competition behavior, and indicate that testosterone adaptively increases our drive for high status in a context-dependent manner. We discuss potential neurobiological pathways through which testosterone may attain these effects on behavior.

A causal role of estradiol in human reinforcement learning

Summary: This study examined the effects of estradiol on reward processing in men, showing that estradiol administration increased reward sensitivity and this effect was moderated by reward sensitivity. Curiosity for information predicts wellbeing mediated by loneliness during COVID-19 pandemic

Summary: Curiosity and information-seeking are crucial for maintaining well-being and mood during the COVID-19 pandemic. Research found that individuals were more motivated to seek positive information and that both trait curiosity and information-seeking predicted higher well-being, mediated by reduced loneliness. Additionally, diet played a role in this relationship, as individuals with lower trait curiosity consumed more tyrosine-rich foods, and high sugar intake was associated with higher anxiety, particularly in individuals with lower trait curiosity.

Neural Correlates Underlying Social-Cue-Induced Value Change

Summary: As humans are social beings, our behavior and cognition are influenced by social cues, such as eye gazes, which can affect our subjective value for rewards, including food. This study used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate how gaze cues modify participants' food value. The results showed that participants were willing to pay more for food items that were attended to by others compared to unattended items. Neural data revealed increased activity in the inferior frontal gyrus, middle temporal gyrus, and caudate when food items were attended to. The functional connectivity between the caudate and angular gyrus predicted individual differences in preference shift. This study highlights the neural mechanism underlying the influence of social cues on the subjective value of food.

Effects of solvent-based adhesive removal on the subsequent dual analysis of fingerprint and DNA

Summary: The combination of classical fingerprinting and DNA profiling is a powerful tool for forensic investigations. However, the impact of organic solvents used in fingerprinting laboratories on DNA recovery and amplification has been overlooked. In this study, we tested different adhesive removers and identified novel PCR inhibitors. Exposure to solvents caused DNA degradation, but only when evaporation was prevented. Treatment time and location affected DNA recovery and fingerprint development. Solvents also shifted DNA distribution from stamps to envelopes. Conventional fingerprint reagents reduced DNA recovery, but the use of adhesive removers did not significantly enhance this effect.

Sex-specific prefrontal-hypothalamic control of behavior and stress responding

Summary: Depression and cardiovascular disease are influenced by daily life stress, but the biological mechanisms behind this connection are not well understood. This study shows that the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) plays a role in regulating stress responses and behavior, with sex-specific effects. In males, the vmPFC-PH circuitry promotes positive motivation and reduces stress responses, while in females it elevates stress responses. This suggests that cortical regulation of stress reactivity and behavior is mediated by projections to the hypothalamus in a sex-specific manner.

Relationship between COVID-related stressors and internalizing symptoms: Gendered neuroendocrine risk profiles

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased life stress and internalizing disorders, with a disproportionate impact on women. This study focused on the neuroendocrinology of stress-related disorders and found that women have lower cortisol responses and higher DHEA responses to stress. However, lower cortisol and higher DHEA are associated with internalizing disorders in women, while the opposite is true in men. The study also examined the relationship between COVID-related stress and internalizing symptoms and found gender differences in the association between DHEA and cortisol and internalizing outcomes. These findings suggest distinct neuroendocrine pathways for stress-related disorders in young men and women.

A 4-session written emotional disclosure intervention lowers 6-month sympathoadrenal urinary output in persons living with HIV
