Amaranth has two morphological types (morphs), one is red and another is green morph. Red morph amaranth is a marvelous source of nutrients, antioxidant pigments, minerals, and phytochemicals compared to green morph amaranth. For this purpose, we selected 25 red morph genotypes to evaluate in terms of proximate, minerals, antioxidant pigments and phytochemicals and antioxidant activity in RCBD design in three replicates. The leaves of red morph amaranth are an excellent source of dietary fiber, carbohydrates, moisture, and protein. We found remarkable potassium, calcium, magnesium (24.96, 10.13, 30.01 mg g(-1)), iron, manganese, copper, zinc (1089.19, 243.59, 25.77, 986.61 mu g g(-1)), chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b (31.79, 16.05 mg 100 g(-1)), beta-cyanins, total flavonoids (102.10 RE mu g g(-1) DW), beta-xanthins, betalains (33.30, 33.09, 66.40 mu g 100 g(-1)), carotenoids, total phenolics (172.23 GAE mu g g(-1) DW), beta-carotene (1225.94, 1043.18 mu g g(-1)), vitamin C (955.19 mu g g(-1)), and antioxidant activity (DPPH and ABTS+) (19.97 and 39.09 TEAC mu g g(-1) DW) in the red morph amaranth leaves. We can select the genotype RA5, RA8, RA18, RA22, and RA25 as antioxidantenriched red morph amaranth. It revealed that amaranth beta-cyanins, phenolics, betalains, flavonoids, beta-xanthins, carotenoids, vitamin C, and beta-carotene had strong antioxidant activity. These phytochemicals contributed significantly in the antioxidant potentials of red morphs amaranth. Red morph amaranth could be a potential source of nutrients, antioxidant pigments, minerals, and phytochemicals as these compounds scavenged ROS and served as potential antioxidants in our daily diet to attaining nutritional and antioxidant sufficiency.

Summary: This study investigated the combining ability and heterosis of six mungbean parental lines and their F(1) hybrids. The results showed significant genetic variability among the parents and hybrids for yield and its components. Both additive and non-additive gene effects were involved in the inheritance of the measured traits. Specific combining ability had a higher effect than general combining ability for plant height and seeds per pod. BARI Mung-1, PS-7, and BMXK1-14004 were identified as the best general combiners for yield, while BMXK1-14004 x Sonali mung and BMXK1-14004 x PS-7 were the best heterotic hybrids.

Genetic Variability, Character Association, and Path Coefficient Analysis in Transplant Aman Rice Genotypes

Abu Salah Muhammad Faysal, Liakat Ali, Md Golam Azam, Umakanta Sarker, Sezai Ercisli, Kirill S. Golokhvast, Romina Alina Marc

Summary: This study evaluated the genetic deviation, trait association, and path coefficient of 20 genotypes of Transplant Aman rice. The results showed that most traits were minimally influenced by the environment and were predominantly controlled by genetic factors. Selection based on plant height, number of effective tillers per hill, number of filled spikelets per panicle, flag leaf length, spikelet sterility percentage, and harvest index would be effective for increasing rice yield.

Assessing Morpho-Physiological and Biochemical Markers of Soybean for Drought Tolerance Potential

Mst. Kaniz Fatema, Muhammad Abdullah Al Mamun, Umakanta Sarker, Muhammad Saddam Hossain, Muhammad Abdul Baset Mia, Rajib Roychowdhury, Sezai Ercisli, Romina Alina Marc, Olubukola Oluranti Babalola, Muhammad Abdul Karim

Summary: Drought stress negatively impacted the growth and biochemical content of soybean, but the genotype AGS383 was minimally affected and exhibited superior traits under drought conditions. This genotype showed healthier root and shoot growth, greater leaf area, higher photosynthesis, and better water absorption and potential compared to other genotypes. It also produced lower levels of proline and malondialdehyde. The heavier grains of AGS383 resulted in higher yield under both normal and drought conditions. Further research is needed to identify the genes responsible for AGS383's adaptation to drought stress.

Salinity Stress Ameliorates Pigments, Minerals, Polyphenolic Profiles, and Antiradical Capacity in Lalshak

Umakanta Sarker, Md. Nazmul Hossain, Shinya Oba, Sezai Ercisli, Romina Alina Marc, Kirill S. Golokhvast

Summary: Previous studies have shown that salinity stress can enhance the nutritional and bioactive compounds of vegetables, making them more valuable for human consumption. In this study, the effects of sodium chloride stress on a specific type of leafy vegetable, Lalshak, were evaluated. The results showed that the mineral content, ascorbic acid, reducing capacity, beta-carotene, flavonoids, pigments, polyphenolic profiles, and antiradical capacity of Lalshak increased with increasing sodium chloride concentration. Therefore, Lalshak could be cultivated as an alternative crop in salt-affected areas, providing a high-quality food source with enhanced nutritional and bioactive properties.

Nishat Jahan, Umakanta Sarker, Mohammad Mehfuz Hasan Saikat, Md Motaher Hossain, Mohammad Golam Azam, Daoud Ali, Sezai Ercisli, Kirill S. Golokhvast

Summary: This study evaluated the variability, associations, path coefficient, and principal component analysis of 20 vegetable amaranth genotypes. Significant genetic differences were found in terms of morpho-chemical traits. Traits such as root weight, stem base diameter, stem weight, and shoot weight were found to have direct effects on foliage yield. The first principal component explained a larger proportion of the variability and was strongly influenced by foliage yield, stem weight, stem base diameter, root weight, and plant height. This study provides important insights for understanding the genetic potential and selecting high yielding cultivars of vegetable amaranth.
