Counting chromosomes is the first step towards a better understanding of the karyotype evolution and the role of chromosome evolution in species diversification within Carex; however, the chromosome count is not known yet for numerous sedges. In this paper chromosome counts were performed for 23 Carex taxa from Armenia, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Poland. Chromosome numbers were determined for the first time in three species (Carex cilicica, 2n = 54; C. phyllostachys, 2n = 56; C. randalpina, 2n = 78), two subspecies (C. muricata subsp. ashokae, 2n = 58; C. nigra subsp. transcaucasica, 2n = 84) and two hybrids (C. xdecolorans, 2n = 74; C. xwalasii, 2n = 108). Among the taxa whose number of chromosomes had been known before, the largest difference was found in C. hartmaniorum (here 2n = 52) and C. aterrima subsp. medwedewii (here 2n = 52). A difference in the chromosome count was demonstrated for C. cilicica (2n = 54) versus the species of the section Aulocystis (2n = 30 to 40) and for C. tomentosa (2n = 48) versus the species of the section Acrocystis (2n = 18 to 38). The results of this study indicate that the position of C. cilicica in Aulocystis section may raise doubts. Attention was paid to the relationship between C. phyllostachys and taxa of the subgenus Carex section Gynobasidae.

Carex phyllostachys (Cyperaceae), a new species in Croatia

Ana Terlevic, Jacob Koopman, Helena Wieclaw, Ivana Resetnik, Sandro Bogdanovic

Summary: This study documents the first occurrence of Carex phyllostachys in the Croatian flora. The rare Euro-Caucasian species was found on Mt Mosor in central Dalmatia in June 2019. This record represents the north-western distribution limit of the species. The habitat, ecology, and morphological similarities with allied species are discussed, along with an identification key provided for Carex species in Croatia belonging to the subgenus Indocarex.

Morphological variability and genetic diversity in Carex buxbaumii and Carex hartmaniorum (Cyperaceae) populations

Helena Wieclaw, Magdalena Szenejko, Thea Kull, Zofia Sotek, Ewa Rebacz-Maron, Jacob Koopman

Summary: Through morphological and genetic analysis, a close relationship between Carex buxbaumii and C. hartmaniorum was revealed, with the latter showing more homogeneity in both morphology and genetics. Populations of C. buxbaumii exhibited greater variability, with distinct genetic and morphological differences observed in populations from Poland and Estonia compared to other populations. Further studies are needed to determine the taxonomic status of infraspecific taxa within C. buxbaumii.

Morphological variability of Carex buekii (Cyperaceae) as a function of soil conditions: a case study of the Central European populations

Summary: This study examined the phenotypic plasticity and the effect of soil conditions on the morphology of Carex buekii. A total of 487 specimens were collected from Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia. The results showed that soil conditions, particularly potassium, had a significant impact on the morphology of C. buekii. This relationship is also relevant to important taxonomic traits in sedges.

Carex section Ammoglochin (Cyperaceae) in Poland

Jacob Koopman, Helena Wieclaw, Piotr Kobierski

Summary: Species within the Carex section Ammoglochin are difficult to distinguish, due to their similarity and a lack of clear-cut morphological characters. In Poland, all seven European species have been recorded. These taxa can be reliably determined by looking at a combination of characters. Carex arenaria, C. brizoides, and C. praecox are the most common types in Poland, while C. colchica, C. curvata, and C. pseudobrizoides are much rarer.

Lectotypification of the name Carex curvata Knaf (Cyperaceae) with some taxonomic remarks

Radomir Repka, Helena Wieclaw, Jacob Koopman

Summary: A lectotype for the name Carex curvata Knaf has been chosen from a herbarium specimen located in the PR (National Museum, Prague). The selected specimen appears to align with the original concept of the name as described by the author, as evidenced by the author's herbarium label containing the same locality mentioned in the protologue. Taxonomic notes on the identification of similar and related species have been provided to complement the typification.

Intersectional hybrids of Carex remota with C. otrubae and C. vulpina (Cyperaceae) in Europe

Jacob Koopman, Helena Wieclaw, Danuta Cembrowska-Lech

Summary: In this study, the hybridization of closely related species Carex vulpina, C. otrubae, and C. remota was investigated through morphological analysis and DNA barcoding. The results provided insights into the morphological and genetic relationships between these species and their hybrids. Morphological analysis identified useful traits for hybrid identification, and DNA barcoding was effective in distinguishing hybrids. Nomenclatural notes were also provided for the hybrids.

Comparison of ethylene carbonate and formamide as components of the hybridization mixture in FISH

Anna Kalinka, Monika Mysliwy, Magdalena Achrem

Summary: The protocols for in situ hybridization techniques can vary, but they usually involve denaturation and hybridization steps. Formamide is commonly used to lower the melting temperature in ISH, while non-toxic ethylene carbonate can achieve similar high-quality results as formamide.
