Summary: This study found that the chiral assembly of BiOBr is determined by the geometric structural matching between the inducer and inorganic species, rather than the chirality of the organic molecular inducer. Chiral mesostructured BiOBr films were successfully induced using diastereoisomeric sugar alcohols with different configurations and optical activities as symmetry-breaking agents. The asymmetric defects in the Br-Bi tetragonal cone caused by physically adsorbed sugar alcohols on the surfaces of BiOBr crystals were identified as the geometric basis for the chiral twist in the BiOBr monolayer.

Summary: Infections caused by Candida species have become a serious public health problem globally. Traditional antifungal drugs are becoming less effective against Candida due to drug resistance. This study found that metallacarborane derivatives based on cobalt bis-dicarbollide [COSAN] are effective against Candida, even against drug-resistant strains, and show potential synergy with amphotericin B.

Summary: This research identified two promising structural patterns that provide COSAN-based compounds with potent and selective activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Additionally, proper hydrophilic-lipophilic balance was found to be crucial for the selective activity of the tested compounds. These patterns could be useful in the development of metallacarborane-based antibiotics with strong antibacterial properties and low cytotoxicity.

Summary: South Korea is one of the largest consumers of flame-retardants worldwide. A study in a highly industrialized lake found severe contamination of HBCDDs in sediments, with the highest levels near industrial complexes. gamma-HBCDD was dominant in water and sediment, while alpha-HBCDD was dominant in fish and shellfish. Bioaccumulation factors of alpha-HBCDDs were > 1 in benthic species, signaling significant concern for HBCDDs in sedimentary environments.

Summary: The visible-light-induced photoreduction of carborane phosphonium salts under blue light irradiation provides a simple and effective method for accessing carbon-centered carboranyl radicals without the use of transition metals and photocatalysts. The utility of this method is demonstrated by the successful preparation of carborane-oxindole-pharmaceutical hybrids through radical cascade reactions. Computational and experimental studies suggest that the carbon-centered carboranyl radicals are generated through single-electron transfer of photoactive charge-transfer complexes between the salts and the additive potassium acetate.

Summary: This work presents the synthesis and structural characterization of the free ortho-carboranyl [C2B10H11](-) and the doubly deprotonated 1,1'-bis(o-carborane) anion [C2B10H10](2)(2-), which are important intermediates in carborane chemistry. The study represents the first examples of a stable, discrete C(H)-deprotonated carborane anion and a discrete molecular dicarbanion, respectively. These findings contribute to the understanding of carbon vertex chemistry in carborane clusters.

Summary: In this study, the successful synthesis and characterization of the first persistent, formally 19-e Mo radical was achieved through photodissociation reaction, with the stabilization of the radical attributed to the unique electron-withdrawing effect of the o-carboranyl substituent at the phosphorus center.

Summary: In this study, an abrupt sign reversal of circular dichroism (CD) between artificial plasmonic diastereoisomers was demonstrated. The sign of CD response was reversed by engineering the deformation height of nanostructures. The electromagnetic multipolar analysis revealed that the sign of CD was determined by phase-controlled excitations of electric quadrupole modes with handedness dependence. This research is significant for exploring profound chiroptics and applications in chirality switching, chiral biosensing, and chiral separation.

Summary: Icosahedral metallacarboranes are unique molecules with two icosahedra sharing a metal center vertex. Among them, the anionic cobalt-based metallacarborane displays oxidation-reduction processes through outer sphere electron transfer. Tethering this molecule to a dye results in switchable luminescent molecules, which act as electrochemically-controlled fluorescent molecular switches in solution and have the ability to form gels through self-assembly. The interplay between dye pi-stacking and metallacarborane interactions governs the supramolecular arrangement, with one compound maintaining luminescent behavior in the gel state.

Summary: Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with predesignable porous structure and high structural flexibility have been developed to address various cutting-edge issues. In this work, a new kind of carborane-based COF with high crystallinity, exceptional porosity, and strong robustness was synthesized. The obtained COFs showed high-performance adsorption and separation of hexane isomers due to the B-H delta-H delta+-C interaction.

Summary: TDDFT scan calculations were conducted to study the interaction between steric effects, S1 potential energy surface (PES) and photophysical properties of s-carborane-anthracene derivatives (o-CB-X-Ant where X=-H,-CH3,-C2H5 and tert-butyl or-tBu). The results indicate that these systems exhibit multiple minima on the S1 PES corresponding to emissive LE and TICT states, as well as a nonemissive CT state. The presence of bulky ligands in o-CB-tBu-Ant leads to energetically unfavorable pathways for the nonemissive CT state.

Summary: This study presents the first example of controlled isomerization of a C,C'-bound bis(ortho-carborane) ligand to a C,B'-bound form without altering the rest of the molecule's structure. The different electron-donating properties of the C and B vertices in carboranes allow for fine-tuning the reactivity of the metal center.

Summary: A number of (hetero)boranes are known where an atom X connects a B-B bond on the open face. In this study, an approach to distinguish between X as a bridge or a vertex in a larger cluster is described. Atom X is found to be better regarded as a vertex, with a verticity of approximately 60-65%.
