Summary: A study showed that enhancing skin barrier from birth might prevent eczema and food allergy. However, applying emollient daily for the first year of life in high-risk children does not appear cost-effective in preventing atopic eczema.

Summary: Infant allergy is an early sign of increased inflammation and immune dysregulation in modern environments, often caused by refined low-fibre diets. This study focuses on the potential benefits of prebiotic dietary fibres in changing gut microbiota and reducing the risk of allergic disease in infants. A randomized controlled trial is being conducted to investigate the effects of maternal prebiotic supplementation on child allergic disease outcomes.

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility of installing a domestic ion-exchange water softener before birth in hard water areas to reduce the risk of eczema in infants with a family history of atopy. Among 78 randomized families, 15% dropped out by 6 months postpartum; 40% of infants in the water softener arm developed visible eczema at 6 months.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of dupilumab with low-potency topical corticosteroids in children aged 6 months to younger than 6 years with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis. The results showed that dupilumab significantly improved atopic dermatitis signs and symptoms versus placebo in children younger than 6 years, with well tolerated and acceptable safety profile similar to older children and adults.

Summary: The study found little evidence of any beneficial effect of BCG revaccination on all-cause mortality. The high proportion of deaths attributable to non-infectious causes beyond infancy, and the long time interval since BCG for most deaths, might obscure any benefits.

Summary: Literature analysis emphasizes that hydrolysed formula should not be routinely used for preventing atopic dermatitis in infants, and formulas should contain concentrations of polyunsaturated fatty acids similar to that in breast milk. Additionally, timely introduction of foods is recommended, as delaying it can be more harmful.

Summary: This trial investigated the efficacy and safety of a 3% kanuka oil cream for the treatment of eczema. The results showed that the group using the kanuka oil cream had a significant improvement in eczema score compared to the control group. The rates of adverse events and withdrawals were similar between the groups, indicating that kanuka oil may be an effective, safe, and well-tolerated treatment for moderate-to-severe eczema in adults.

Summary: We conducted a survey to understand UK healthcare professionals' routine practice of prescribing oral isotretinoin for acne vulgaris treatment and their experiences and views on low daily dose regimens. The survey showed that clinicians adopted a patient-centred approach in dosing decisions, with varied rationales for using low-dose regimens focused on patient wellbeing. Concerns about efficacy and treatment duration were also noted. The survey results will inform a clinical trial investigating the effectiveness of low daily dose isotretinoin for acne treatment.

Summary: Our study found that the Fitzpatrick Scale fails to accurately reflect how individuals perceive their own skin tone. Respondents provided diverse descriptions of their skin tone, with some acknowledging the impact of social inequalities on their language choices. In order to create comprehensive and inclusive tools, it is crucial to incorporate the perspectives of patients.

Summary: Emollients are widely used for treating atopic dermatitis, but there is limited knowledge about the adverse effects associated with their use. This study aimed to evaluate the reporting of adverse events in randomized controlled trials of emollients for eczema. The results showed poor and inconsistent reporting of adverse events, indicating the need for standardized reporting guidelines.

Summary: The study aims to generate detailed data about finger injury experience and treatment from patients' perspectives, and understand their attitudes towards research involvement. The results show that finger injuries can have a greater impact on people's lives than expected, and patients need more support. Factors such as age, job, lifestyle, and hobbies influence treatment experience and willingness to participate in hand research. Patients prefer studies comparing variants of the same treatment over studies comparing different modalities.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of hand wash products, including mild cleansers, against various viruses. The results showed that some mild cleansers can be a suitable alternative to soap for viruses with envelopes, but have no virucidal activity against non-enveloped viruses. Water type and hand hygiene conditions had little impact on the effectiveness of hand wash products. Therefore, new hand hygiene regimens should aim to encompass all viruses with varying structures, with emphasis on those without viral envelopes.
