Summary: This study developed stable EO-based nano-emulsions with repellent properties against the major stored product pest, the lesser grain borer Rhyzopetha dominica. Findings showed that habituation could occur in R. dominica adults exposed to the strongest repellents, while insects fully recovered their responsiveness within 24 hours after exposure. This behavioral process of habituation may reduce the effectiveness of repellent EO-based formulations against R. dominica, emphasizing the need to consider this in integrated pest management programs.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the role of mitochondrial genome in insect resistance to phosphine, comparing the mitochondrial genome of Rhyzopertha dominica with a strain from Jingziguan, China, to identify potential differences. These data will aid in examining differences in mitochondrial gene expression between phosphine susceptible and resistant insect populations.

Summary: The insecticidal effect of the neonicotinoid insecticide thiamethoxam on the lesser grain borer and the rice weevil was studied in laboratory experiments. While the treated layers of wheat increased parental mortality and decreased progeny production for both species, progeny production could not be totally avoided even with treatment of the entire grain quantity. Placement of the insects significantly affected the efficacy of thiamethoxam.

Summary: This study focused on the effect of geographic location on the microbiota composition of the lesser grain borer. The results showed that the bacterial and fungal communities varied depending on geographic location, even after being reared in a laboratory environment. Laboratory acclimation reduced bacterial diversity but did not reduce fungal diversity.

Summary: The study found resistance of Rhyzopertha dominica to bifenthrin and cypermethrin in Colombia, while it remained susceptible to pirimiphos-methyl and organophosphates. This highlights the urgent need for nationwide monitoring of insecticide resistance in stored pests for better management strategies.

Summary: Rhyzopertha dominica Prip (RdPrip) cDNA was cloned (GenBank accession no. OK318454), and its transcription levels were determined in different developmental stages and tissues using qPCR. The results showed that RdPrip was highly transcribed in female adults and ovaries, indicating its vital role in female reproduction. Knockdown of RdPrip in female adults significantly decreased the hatching rate of eggs and the number of offspring.

Summary: The study demonstrated that Acinetobacter baumannii Rd-H2 from Rhizopertha dominica has a certain degradation effect on polyethylene (PE), and its multi-copper oxidase gene abMco can activate the enzyme, showing good degradation effect on PE film, which may be key to solving the problem of difficult degradation of polyethylene.

Summary: The red flour beetle and lesser grain borer cause significant damage to stored commodities, including grains. Resistance to the widely used fumigant, phosphine, is a global problem. This study found that phosphine-resistant strains of the two insect species contain more lipids than susceptible strains, providing additional information for understanding the mechanisms of phosphine resistance and developing strategies for managing resistance.

Summary: This study evaluated the insecticidal effectiveness of essential oils from different Thymus species against Rhyzopertha dominica adults. The results showed that several essential oils exhibited significant fumigant activity and affected the enzyme activity and nutritional indices of the pests. Therefore, these essential oils can be considered as efficient agents for R. dominica management.

Summary: The study demonstrated the insecticidal activity of encapsulated Mentha spicata essential oil against Rhyzopertha dominica and found that the residual amount of oil in wheat grains varied depending on storage conditions. The contact of wheat grains with the oil led to lower amounts of compounds in the resulting flour.

Summary: The study showed that the developmental time of R. dominica was prolonged on maize compared to other diets, while the survival rate of immature stages was highest on wheat and rye. Adult longevity, fecundity, and egg fertility were highest on wheat and lowest on maize. The intrinsic rate of increase and finite rate of increase were highest on wheat and rye, and lowest on maize, rice, and sorghum.
