Tonsteins are layers generated from volcanic ash fall and constitute an important chronostratigraphic marker that allows the correlation between layers in and out of the sedimentary basin, as well as the calibration of biostratigraphic frameworks. In this contribution a new occurrence of tonstein is reported associated with the coal seams in Parana state, in the Parana Basin, and it was used as a tie point in local and intra-Gondwanan palynostratigraphy. First, the volcanic origin of the layer was attested by using methods as petrography, SEM and XRD. Then, the layer was dated by U-Pb zircon with LA-ICP-MS method, obtaining an age of 286 +/- 3 Ma which corresponds to the Artinskian (middle Cisuralian), thus the layers are correlated with the coal seam from Faxinal coalfield. However, the palynostratigraphic position for the studied interval was at the Protohaploxypinus goraiensis Subzone (lower Vittatina costabilis Zone), due to the presence of Protohaploxypinus goraiensis, Illinites unicus, Vittatina, and Converrucosisporites confiuens while palynostratigraphy of Faxinal places it at the Hamiapollenites karooensis Subzone (upper Vittatina costabdis Zone). Therefore, one possible explanation is that the boundary between the subzones of Vittatina costabilis Zone is younger on the studied site than in the rest of the basin.

Summary: In the Carajás Domain, the oldest units include migmatites affected by early dehydration and late water-fluxed partial melting. These processes resulted in the formation of different rocks with varying structures and compositions, revealing key periods in crustal evolution and the formation of continental crust.

Geochemistry and provenance of the metasedimentary rocks surrounding the Santa Quiteria magmatic arc, NE Brazil: Tectonic and paleogeographic implications for the assembly of West Gondwana

Luiza de Carvalho Mendes, Ticiano Jose Saraiva dos Santos, Nadia Borges Gomes

Summary: The Western Gondwana region was formed due to the closure of the Pharusian-Goianides Ocean, leading to the formation of magmatic arcs, high-pressure belts, and sedimentary basins. Rocks in this region were classified based on their geochemical characteristics and isotopic data, showing different origins and depositional environments. The Caninde Complex and Independencia Unit were deposited in basins associated with both active and passive margin settings, controlled by the Santa Quiteria Magmatic Arc.

A new record of continental arc magmatism in the Ceara Central Domain, Borborema Province (NE Brazil): evidence from the Pacatuba-Maranguape Complex

Joao Paulo A. Pitombeira, Wagner da S. Amaral, Ticiano J. S. dos Santos, Elton L. Dantas, Reinhardt A. Fuck

Summary: This study investigated the arc magmatism in the western active margin of Gondwana by analyzing new U-Pb zircon ages, lithogeochemistry, whole-rock Nd, and in situ zircon Hf isotopes from the Pacatuba-Maranguape Complex in NE Brazil. The results suggest that the granitoids in the area were formed from a mixture of juvenile magmas and older crustal components. The geochronological and geochemical data indicate a synchronous evolution with the Santa Quiteria Magmatic Arc, pointing to a magmatic flare-up event between 660 and 620 Ma during the subduction of Goias-Pharusian oceanic crust in the central portion of West Gondwana.

David Dominguez-Santos, Daniel Valderrama, Ahmet Utku Yazgan

Summary: This document presents a study comparing the spectra of large-magnitude seismic records in Chile between 2012 and 2022 with the design spectra of NCh433 and D. S 61. The aim is to determine if Chile's seismic-resistant regulations are updated to the existing reality and propose new design spectra that better represent the seismic activity in Chile during the last decade.

Summary: Shoreline changes in the southern coast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were analyzed from 1986 to 2018. The study found that both natural and human factors significantly impact shoreline changes. The findings provided important insights into predicting future shoreline positions and identifying vulnerable regions. Additionally, human activities were found to influence shoreline change models, emphasizing the need for effective management strategies to protect ecosystems and communities.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of 15 toxic metals in surface sediment in a tropical river ecosystem in Cuba. The results showed that the sediments had higher concentrations of four metals compared to Cuban norms. Various contamination indices were calculated, and correlations analysis revealed the main sources of contamination. The study provides important information for the management of the river and emphasizes the need for metal pollution control and monitoring.

Two-stage evolution of a bimodal reservoir: The case of Holocene lavas of the Lanín composite volcano, Southern Volcanic Zone, Chile

Camila Morgan, Eduardo Morgado, Miguel-Angel Parada, Raimundo Brahm, Francisca Mallea-Lillo

Summary: Lanin volcano is a composite volcano in the Andes, which has erupted lava flows with different compositions. The volcano's magma reservoir contains a crystal mush, and the pre-eruptive conditions include temperature, pressure, and oxygen fugacity. Fractional crystallisation has led to the evolution of the magma with different compositions.

Double distance dependence in high-frequency ground motion along the plate boundary in Northern Chile

Benjamin Idini, Sergio Ruiz, Jean-Paul Ampuero, Felipe Leyton, Efrain Rivera

Summary: This study investigates the role of wedge integrity on the frequency content of strong ground motion produced by subduction earthquakes in Northern Chile. The results show that the frequency characteristics of seismic waves vary with hypocentral distance, indicating lateral variations in anelastic attenuation due to the heterogeneous tectonic structure.
