Summary: This study examined the importance of environmental variables in phenological phases for plant niches and quality. It found that environmental variables contributed more than 30% to species distribution modeling and that some populations were lost when specific phenological stages were considered. The study also highlighted the impact of environmental variables on quality and identified six key variables in secondary metabolite formation. These findings emphasize the importance of phenological phases and provide an integrative approach for resource allocation in obtaining medicinal plants.

Summary: R2R3-MYB transcription factors play important roles in various biological processes, particularly in the regulation of secondary metabolites. This study focused on the R2R3-MYB gene family in Scutellaria baicalensis and identified 95 genes. These genes were categorized into 34 subgroups based on their exon-intron structures and conserved motifs. The study also revealed that segmental duplications drove the evolution and expansion of the R2R3-MYB gene family. Additionally, the expression patterns of these genes varied in different tissues and under different conditions. Some genes exhibited specific expression profiles in response to hormone stimuli and abiotic stresses. Furthermore, certain genes were found to be localized in the nucleus and possessed transcriptional activation activity. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the R2R3-MYB gene family in S. baicalensis and serves as a foundation for further investigation of their biological function.

Summary: The application of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) to investigate the changes of lipids in biological tissues has yielded significant results. However, the presence of structural isomers with varying C=C double bond (DB) locations calls for the development of isomer-resolved MSI. In this study, a new light-driven on-tissue [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction coupled with MALDI-MS/MS imaging was introduced to identify lipid DB position isomers and their spatial signatures in biological tissues.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial location and variation of endogenous metabolites in continuously cropped Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge (SMB) roots using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI). The results showed that continuous cropping led to lower expression levels of tanshinones, salvianolic acids, polyamines, and oligosaccharides in SMB roots. However, there was little difference in the expressions of caffeic acid and salvianolic acid A. Ferulic acid was more widely distributed in continuously cropped SMB.
