An easy synthesis method of hollow, porous gold nanoparticles (AuHP NPs) with controlled diameter and pores sizes and with a wide range of light absorbance (continuous between 500 and 900 nm) is presented together with the explanation of the nanoparticle formation mechanism. The NPs were investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) combined with the selected area electron diffraction patterns, X-ray diffraction and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. TEM images showed that changing the synthesis temperature allows to obtain AuHP NPs with sizes from 35 +/- 4 nm at 60 degrees C to 76 +/- 8 nm at 90 degrees C. The effects of nanoscale porosity on the far- and near-field optical properties of the nanoparticles, as well as on effective conversion of electromagnetic energy into thermal energy, were applied in simulated photothermal cancer therapy. The latter one was simulated by irradiation of two cancer cell lines SW480 and SW620 with lasers operating at 650 nm and 808 nm wavelengths. The mortality of cells after using the synthesized AuHP NPs as photosensitizers is between 20 and 50% and increases with the decrease in the diameter of the AuHP NPs. All these attractive properties of the AuHP NPs make them find application in many biomedical studies.

Determination of idiopathic female infertility from infrared spectra of follicle fluid combined with gonadotrophin levels, multivariate analysis and machine learning methods

Pawel Jakubczyk, Wieslaw Paja, Krzysztof Pancerz, Jozef Cebulski, Joanna Depciuch, Ozgur Uzun, Nevzat Tarhan, Zozan Guleken

Summary: By analyzing the FTIR spectra of follicular fluid, it is possible to distinguish idiopathic female infertility from the control group. Our findings suggest that idiopathic female infertility is associated with higher levels of lipids and lower levels of amides in follicular fluid. Additionally, the six machine learning methods used in this study showed classification accuracies ranging from 93.75% to 100% depending on the algorithm used.

Summary: This study investigated the use of Raman spectroscopy as a promising analytical tool in medical diagnostics and a method to distinguish between healthy individuals and those with cholangiocarcinoma. The results showed that there were differences in the Raman spectra of amino acids, proteins, and lipid vibrations between healthy individuals and cancer patients. Specific ranges in the Raman spectra were identified as effective in distinguishing between the two groups.

Summary: This study investigated the potential diagnostic tool of Raman spectroscopy for polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and found that Raman shifts of amides and CH2, CH3 lipid groups could be potential PCOS markers. The study also revealed a strong correlation between hormones and lipids, as well as between hormones and protein functional groups in PCOS women. These findings provide new insights into the diagnosis and treatment of PCOS.

Summary: Endometriosis refers to the formation of the uterus lining outside the uterus. Raman spectroscopy analysis of serum showed that it is possible to distinguish between healthy women and those with endometriosis using specific Raman ranges. Lipid vibrations may serve as spectral markers of the disease.

Size-dependent theoretical and experimental photothermal conversion efficiency of spherical gold nanoparticles

J. Depciuch, M. Stec, A. Maximienko, J. Baran, M. Parlinska-Wojtan

Summary: This study found that the size of gold nanoparticles affects their photothermal conversion efficiency, which can be correlated with the absorption/extinction ratios calculated by the Mie theory. Moreover, it revealed the photosensitizing properties of gold nanoparticles in photothermal cancer therapy and found that nanoparticle size affects cell death and changes in DNA, phospholipids, proteins, and cholesterol structures.

Summary: Field studies conducted from 2016 to 2019 in south-eastern Poland revealed that the chemical composition of winter wheat grain can be altered by the application of biostimulants and hydro-thermal conditions. Biostimulants containing salicylic acid and nettle extracts show promise as a potential alternative to synthetic crop protection products.
