Summary: By using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as a modified material, boron nanoparticles (n-B) were modified by electrospinning and solvent anti-solvent methods, which effectively coated B particles and decreased the agglomeration size. The reaction heat and combustion intensity of B particles were increased, and the combustion performance of B/PVDF composites prepared by the electrospinning method was better than that prepared by the solvent anti-solvent method.

Summary: End-of-life reverse osmosis membranes can be repurposed for forward osmosis applications as recycled FO and transformed recycled FO membranes, with the latter showing superior performance in terms of water permeate fluxes. The transformation process involves interfacial polymerization to further enhance FO membrane performance. This study demonstrates the feasibility of utilizing discarded RO membranes for wastewater treatment in FO technology, contributing to circular economy and sustainability in membrane science.

Summary: A new class of PVDF-based membranes suitable for membrane distillation was prepared via electrospinning. By tuning the solvent ratio and operating parameters, the classical fiber morphology of PVDF electrospun membranes was changed to generate a beaded structure. Increasing the bead density improved the water contact angle and reduced the membrane thickness, but decreased the membrane mechanical stability. Simultaneous deployment of 17 and 25 wt% of PVDF solutions in a double-needle electrospinning device enabled the fabrication of electrospun PVDF-beaded membranes with high hydrophobicity, low thickness, and good mechanical stability for membrane distillation.

Summary: Surfactants can modify the property and performance of polyamide layer during interfacial polymerization of amines and trimesoyl chloride. Different types of surfactants have different effects on the membrane, such as changing the surface charge and hydrophilicity, and affecting the water and salt transport. It is important to choose a suitable surfactant to regulate the membrane performance.

Summary: In this study, a novel substrate-floating interfacial polymerization (SFIP) method was proposed to fabricate a defect-free polyamide skin layer on a macro-porous substrate. The addition of inorganic salt such as NaCl during SFIP process enhanced the diffusion of MPD molecules, resulting in an excellent ethanol flux/reverse LiCl flux value for the fabricated FO membrane. Additionally, the hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of the substrate was found to control the forming position of the polyamide skin layer via SFIP method. This work provides a feasible strategy for fabricating high-quality desalted membranes and demonstrates their potential in organic solvent recovery.

Summary: This study presents the synthesis of cyclic peptide-poly(vinylidene fluoride) (CP-PVDF) conjugates using (d-alt-l)-cyclopeptides as building blocks and their self-assembly into tube-like structures. The conjugates were prepared with high purity through a grafting-from strategy and controlled self-assembly was achieved by addition of THF, resulting in the formation of long tube-like structures. The unprecedented formation of long tubular peptide-polymer aggregates is believed to be due to synergetic effects between the stacking of cyclic peptides and interactions of the fluoropolymer-peptide conjugates.

Summary: The substrate of forward osmosis (FO) thin-film composite (TFC) membranes plays a crucial role in the formation of the selective layer. Improving the substrate's thickness, tortuosity, and porosity can further enhance the properties of TFC membranes. In this study, a TFC membrane with a polyamide selective layer and a palygorskite-chitin (PAL-CH) embedded polysulfone substrate was developed for FO desalination. The inclusion of PAL-CH resulted in improved water flux and reduced structural parameter, leading to a 110% increase in water recovery compared to pristine membranes.
