Summary: Fontan-associated liver disease is a common issue in Fontan patients. This study evaluated the maximal liver function capacity in adult Fontan patients using LiMAx (R) test. The study found that most patients had normal liver function capacity and there was no clear correlation between liver function capacity and FALD severity.

Summary: This study found that the homozygous MBOAT7 rs641738 polymorphism is associated with a reduced extraction efficiency of (C-13)-methacetin from the portal flow, indicating the presence of early liver dysfunction independently from liver fibrosis. Moreover, liver steatosis worsens (C-13)-methacetin extraction efficiency. The mechanisms of interaction between external factors and multiple gene polymorphisms (including MBOAT7) need to be further explored for primary prevention and novel therapeutic strategies.

Summary: The C-13-methacetin breath test is a promising tool for predicting outcomes in adults with acute liver failure and acute liver injury. The PDR peak values are significantly correlated with survival rates, and the test may aid in medical decision making for critically ill patients.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between liver surface nodularity (LSN), chemotherapy-associated liver injury (CALI), and clinically relevant post-hepatectomy liver failure (CR-PHLF) in patients undergoing hepatectomy for colorectal liver metastases (CLM). The findings suggest that LSN >= 2.5 is significantly associated with CR-PHLF, while the association between LSN and CALI is not significant. LSN >= 2.5 and future liver remnant (FLR) < 30% were identified as significant preoperative predictors of CR-PHLF.

Summary: This study identified ALBI score and ascites as independent predictors of PHLF after mini-invasive liver surgery. The risk of PHLF can be stratified into low, intermediate, and high-risk groups based on these factors, with corresponding increases in postoperative complications, Comprehensive Complication Index, and hospital stay. This risk prediction model provides an objective tool for correct clinical decision-making.

Summary: This study compared different criteria for post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) and evaluated the association between International Study Group of Liver Surgery (ISGLS) PHLF and the Comprehensive Complication Index (CCI) and 90-day mortality. The results showed that the ISGLS criteria best predicted 90-day mortality. Patients with ISGLS grade C had an increased risk of CCI>40 and 90-day mortality.

Summary: The interaction between body fat accumulation, insulin resistance, and NAFLD is associated with decreased hepatic extraction efficiency and impaired liver microsomal function. Dietary models and lifestyles have a minor role in promoting functional changes.

Summary: A predictive model for post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) was successfully developed using preoperative and intraoperative factors, which outperformed existing scoring systems and accurately predicted PHLF in patients undergoing hepatectomy. The model can help identify high-risk patients and contribute significantly to postoperative care.

Summary: This study evaluated the association between future liver remnant volume (FLRV) and post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF). The results showed a significant decrease in FLRV% in PHLF patients, with over half of them having FLRV% < 30%. Therefore, the authors recommend risk stratification and additional CT volumetry for high-risk patients prior to major hepatectomy.

Summary: This study found that liver function in Fontan patients is related to hemodynamics and Fontan failure. Impaired metabolic liver function is associated with elevated pulmonary artery pressure and ventricular end-diastolic pressure. These findings may contribute to a better understanding and management of liver health in Fontan patients.

Summary: The study developed a preoperative nomogram to predict the risk of posthepatectomy liver failure, which demonstrated good predictive performance in a validation cohort. This nomogram provides valuable patient-specific probabilities for PHLF and can assist in preoperative patient counseling and selection.

Summary: This study investigates the expression of cytokines and growth factors in post-hepatectomy regeneration and finds that certain expression trajectories are associated with liver failure, morbidity, and mortality. Regression models can predict mortality following major liver resection based on preoperative cytokine and growth factor signatures. Liquid-biopsy based risk profiling can predict postoperative liver failure and mortality on the first day after surgery.

Summary: This study aimed to construct and validate a combined pre- and intra-operative nomogram based on the degrees of cirrhosis in predicting posthepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. The results showed that the combined pre- and intra-operative nomogram was more accurate in predicting PHLF compared to the pre-operative nomogram.

Summary: This study found that the functional liver imaging score (FLIS) based on preoperative gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI can predict posthepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. FLIS has a higher predictive power than the MELD score, ALBI score, and ICG-R15 clearance.
