Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether patients diagnosed with atrial septal defects (ASDs) undergoing total joint arthroplasty have differences in medical complications, readmissions, lengths of stay (LOS), and costs. The results showed that ASD patients had a higher risk of medical complications, longer hospital stays, and increased costs compared to non-ASD patients.

Summary: This study examines the resource utilization of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in China, focusing on the length of stay (LOS) and inpatient charges. It finds that the LOS has decreased from 2013 to 2019, and there has been a gradual decrease in inpatient charges. However, there are sociodemographic and hospital-related discrepancies in resource utilization.

Summary: There is a gradual reduction in hospital length of stay (LOS) and an increase in 30-day readmission rates in older patients in Italy. This suggests that careful pre-discharge assessment is necessary for older people, and community healthcare services should be improved to reduce the risk of readmission.

Summary: The study aimed to determine if patients receiving home health services after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) had lower rates of complications, emergency room visits, and readmissions, and if home health provided value by reducing care costs. The findings showed that patients receiving home health services had higher rates of emergency room visits and readmissions, as well as higher costs of care. Therefore, home health services do not appear to provide value.

Summary: This research addresses the off-line admission planning problem with uncertain length of stay in the inpatient service, considering the uncertainty in patient's length of stay and bed availability. By using a distributionally robust optimization framework, the coordinated decisions of scheduling and allocation aim to maximize the weighted sum of patient's admission benefit while reducing the cost of overstay. The proposed approach outperforms benchmark models in reliability and computational efficiency, providing insights to practitioners and hospital decision-makers on anticipating admission decisions at the tactical-operational level while considering the randomness of the length of stay.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the risk factors for readmission within 30 days or prolonged length of stay after cervical disc arthroplasty. Results showed that postoperative superficial wound infection, ASA classification, and BMI were predictors of readmission, while female sex, diabetes, postoperative wound dehiscence, ASA class, and operative time were significantly associated with prolonged length of stay.

Summary: A retrospective cohort study comparing ED length of stay, treatment time, and decision time between different specialties in a hospital in Israel found that emergency medicine specialists had shorter ED-LOS compared to internists and general surgeons. Increasing the number of emergency medicine specialists in the ED may help decrease ED-LOS, overcrowding, and medical errors while improving patient satisfaction and outcomes.

Summary: In the past decade, the number of people diagnosed with dementia has significantly increased, leading to a demand for assistive technology-based devices to support independent living. However, existing devices may not fully meet the needs due to fears and uncertainties. The challenges have been further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing the need for appropriate user testing and future research in this area.

Summary: COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 has led to a global pandemic with high morbidity and mortality, especially in the elderly population. Current research indicates that aging pathways play fundamental roles in determining lifespan and healthspan, with senescence and aging central to COVID-19 pathogenesis. Targeting senescent cells through senolytics could potentially alleviate symptoms, prevent severe infection, and reduce mortality, thus enhancing healthspan in COVID-19 patients.

Summary: This study investigated the association between various comorbidities and COVID-19 in-hospital mortality. The results showed that comorbidities such as lymphoma, metastatic cancer, liver disease, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, obesity, renal disease, and dementia increased the risk of COVID-19 mortality, while asthma was associated with a lower risk of death. The study also found that the more comorbidities a patient had, the higher the risk of death.

Summary: This study investigated the association of genetic variants with response to anti-TNF-alpha drugs in rheumatoid arthritis patients. Results showed that the MTHFR1 rs1801133 variant and HLA-DRB1*0404 allele were associated with treatment response, while the CD226 rs763361 SNP variant was significantly associated with Delta DAS28. A combined predictive model suggested that patients with the HLA-DRB1*0404 allele and without the CD226 rs763361 polymorphism exhibited the largest reduction in DAS28 after anti-TNF-alpha treatment.
