Summary: The research proposed an efficient method for preparing low-cost calcium alginate capsules using industrial calcium sodium and self-developed reaction kettle. Attapulgite was incorporated in different proportions to enhance the strength and assure the survival of the capsules in asphalt mixture, forming composite shell capsules. The multi-cavity composite shell capsules within asphalt mixture can gradually release the rejuvenator and significantly soften the binder, enhancing the crack-healing property of asphalt pavement.

Summary: In this study, a microsphere material SAH-Gly was successfully constructed by loading glyphosate (Gly) with dopamine-modified attapulgite (DA-Gly) and encapsulating it in sodium alginate hydrogels. SAH-Gly exhibited high Gly releasing rate and hydrogel swelling rate in alkaline environment, as well as enhanced stability to ultraviolet rays and temperature variability. The sustained release behavior of Gly from SAH-Gly could degrade, adsorb, and leach Gly molecules, helping reduce the loss of active Gly and enhancing its sustainability in agricultural practice.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of ageing on the healing properties of asphalt concrete containing calcium alginate/attapulgite composite capsules under cyclic loading. It is found that the capsules have good morphological structure, mechanical strength, and thermal stability, and can release asphalt rejuvenator at the appropriate time. The asphalt mixtures containing capsules show significantly better healing properties than plain asphalt mixtures in both short-term and long-term ageing conditions.

Summary: Alginate-based nanocarriers have great potential in the delivery of bioactive compounds. Calcium alginate and sodium alginate, as the most promising wall materials, are non-toxic, relatively cheap, simple to produce, and biocompatible and biodegradable. The review discusses different alginate-based nanocarriers and their entrapment of bioactives, as well as their bioavailability in the gastric environment. Alginate-based nanocarriers can be used as emulsifiers/encapsulants for various bioactives, including vitamins, minerals, peptides, essential oils, and carotenoids. The combination of alginate-based nanocarriers with other polysaccharides/emulsifiers is recognized as the most effective approach for the protection, delivery, and sustained release of bioactives.

Summary: The study focuses on the synthesis of calcium alginate/diatomite composite capsules to improve the mechanical strength and slow down the release of rejuvenator. The capsules with a multi-cavity structure have good thermal resistance and compressive strength. The inclusion of diatomite effectively decelerates the rejuvenator release speed. The test beams containing modified capsules achieved acceptable healing level after long-term compression loading, indicating the potential of these capsules for long-term pavement healing.

Summary: The effect of adding bentonite and encapsulation efficiency on the release rate of insect sex pheromone Dodecyl acetate (DDA) in alginate-based granules was studied. The encapsulation efficiency of DDA increased with the increase of alginate/bentonite ratio. The selected alginate-bentonite formulation (DDAB(75)A(10)) exhibited a prolonged DDA release profile, and the release process followed a non-Fickian or anomalous transport mechanism.

Summary: A newly designed lanthanum-crosslinked attapulgite/sodium alginate (La-ATP/SA) hydrogel adsorbent was prepared, and attapulgite was found to enhance the mechanical strength of the hydrogel. Batch experiments showed that chemical adsorption dominated the sorption process, with a maximum phosphate sorption capacity of 24.57 mg/g. The La-ATP/SA hydrogel exhibited pH-dependent behavior and maintained efficient phosphate removal over a wide pH range.

Summary: This study demonstrates that alginate gel rapidly under ambient conditions through calcium mediated electrostatic crosslinks, forming protective matrices for sensitive bioactive cargo. The crosslinking in CLAMs plays a crucial role in determining its barrier properties and applications in food, cosmetics, and agriculture. The extent of gelation in spray dried CLAMs can be controlled by the molecular weights of the alginates at saturating calcium concentrations.

Summary: By using rational atomic engineering, nanoparticles of Prussian blue (PB) and its structural analogues with divalent 3d metal ion doping (such as Co2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+) exhibit discriminated peroxidase-like activity, with Cu2+-doped PB (CuPB) showing the highest catalytic activity. The optimized CuPB nanoparticles are coupled with natural uricase to develop a cascade reaction system for measuring the uric acid level in human urine samples, which is highly correlated with standard values determined on instrumentation. This method can be translated into urinalysis, especially as assay kits for point-of-care testing, due to its simplicity and scalability.
