Purpose: To analyze the association between body fluid changes evaluated by bioelectrical impedance vector analysis and dilution techniques over a competitive season in athletes. Methods: A total of 58 athletes of both sexes (men: age 18.7 [4.0] y and women: age 19.2 [6.0] y) engaging in different sports were evaluated at the beginning (pre) and 6 months after (post) the competitive season. Deuterium dilution and bromide dilution were used as the criterion methods to assess total body water (TBW) and extracellular water (ECW), respectively; intracellular water (ICW) was calculated as TBW-ECW. Bioelectrical resistance and reactance were obtained with a phase-sensitive 50-kHz bioelectrical impedance analysis device; bioelectrical impedance vector analysis was applied. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to assess fat mass and fat-free mass. The athletes were empirically classified considering TBW change (pre-post, increase or decrease) according to sex. Results: Significant mean vector displacements in the postgroups were observed in both sexes. Specifically, reductions in vector length (Z/H) were associated with increases in TBW and ICW (r= -.718, P < .01; r= -.630, P < .01, respectively) and decreases in ECW:ICW ratio (r= .344, P < .05), even after adjusting for age, height, and sex. Phase-angle variations were positively associated with TBW and ICW (r= .458, P < .01; r= .564, P < .01, respectively) and negatively associated with ECW:ICW (r= -.436, P < .01). Phase angle significantly increased in all the postgroups except in women in whom TBW decreased. Conclusions: The results suggest that bioelectrical impedance vector analysis is a suitable method to obtain a qualitative indication of body fluid changes during a competitive season in athletes.

Agreement Between Body Mass Index and Body Fat in Adolescents With Different Physical Activity Levels

Andre de Araujo Pinto, Mateus Augusto Bim, Yara Maria Franco Moreno, Luiz Rodrigo Augustemak de Lima, Analiza Monica Silva, Andreia Pelegrini

Summary: This study aimed to verify the consistency between BMI and body fat in adolescents with different levels of physical activity. The results showed that BMI overestimated body fat values in boys with low physical activity and in both boys and girls with high physical activity. On the other hand, BMI underestimated body fat values in girls with high and low physical activity. These findings highlight the importance of cautious interpretation of BMI results, especially considering the inadequate physical activity levels among adolescents.

Are methods of estimating fat-free mass loss with energy-restricted diets accurate?

Summary: Two studies with participants who were overweight and obese showed that the chemical proportions of FFM may change after short-term weight loss, particularly in terms of bone mineral and protein composition. This observation highlights the need for caution when using widely used body composition models and methods, especially in clinical trials where FFM is used as a safety signal or for metabolic evaluations.

Summary: This study developed BIA-derived equations that can effectively predict regional LSTM in healthy adults and compared them with DXA. The results showed good agreement between the predicted LSTM and DXA-measured LSTM in most body regions. This suggests that BIA can be a cost-effective and time-efficient alternative to DXA for assessing and identifying LSTM imbalances.

Summary: This study identified the key factors associated with low and high levels of physical activity, sedentary behavior, and physical fitness during late adulthood. Factors such as marital status, accessibility to technology and sports facilities, family participation in exercise, and financial income were found to have significant impacts. Widowers without a computer and sport facilities were more likely to be physically inactive, while individuals with a family that exercises and a computer at home were less likely to be inactive. Widowers without sidewalks in the neighborhood were the most sedentary, while married women with exercise space at home were the least sedentary. Men with low financial income and frequent physical problems had the lowest level of physical fitness, while those with a higher income and a computer at home had the highest level of physical fitness.

Interindividual variability in metabolic adaptation of non-exercise activity thermogenesis after a 1-year weight loss intervention in former elite athletes

Catarina L. Nunes, Gil B. Rosa, Filipe Jesus, Steven B. Heymsfield, Claudia S. Minderico, Paulo Martins, Luis B. Sardinha, Analiza M. Silva

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of adaptive thermogenesis in non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) after weight loss (WL) and understand the associations of these compensations with weight loss. The study found no significant differences in NEAT or non-exercise physical activity (NEPA) after the WL intervention, indicating that compensatory changes in these activities may not play a significant role in weight loss.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the effects of home-based exercise on physical fitness in cancer patients undergoing active treatment. The results showed that regular home-based exercise programs are effective in improving the 6-minute walk test for cancer patients undergoing active treatment, but no significant effects were found for muscle strength and body composition.

Athletes with different habitual fluid intakes differ in hydration status but not in body water compartments

Ruben Francisco, Filipe Jesus, Catarina L. Nunes, Iolanda Cioffi, Marta Alvim, Goncalo V. Mendonca, Henry Lukaski, Luis B. Sardinha, Analiza M. Silva

Summary: This study examined the physiological differences between elite athletes with habitual low and high water intake. The results showed that athletes with low water intake were classified as dehydrated based on urine-specific gravity, while their body water compartments were not different from athletes with high water intake. Therefore, interventions should be taken to encourage athletes to have sufficient water intake to maintain optimal hydration.
