Summary: City-to-city learning processes play an important role in building better urban food systems, but they face challenges in terms of stakeholder involvement, the political and social contexts of each city, and information availability. This paper examines the travel of ideas between Quito and Lima in their urban food systems, finding that stakeholders perceive city-to-city learning as important but still need to overcome obstacles such as the COVID-19 pandemic and specific challenges. The success of the ongoing process between Quito and Lima depends on institutional maturity, social and political environment, resources, and the willingness of local authorities to work on this topic.

Summary: The importance of governance for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is widely recognized. However, the design of effective governance arrangements for initiating and delivering necessary transformations is complex, involving multiple scales and actors, and there are still many knowledge gaps. This paper reviews existing literature on governance of transformations, emphasizes different scales of governance, discusses common challenges, and presents solutions based on recent case studies. It concludes by suggesting five concrete steps for reformers to increase the likelihood of success in their transformation efforts.

Summary: Large-scale bioenergy production using agricultural residues has potential impacts on energy, environment, economy and society. This study quantifies and analyzes these impacts in 31 Chinese regions by 2030. Results show significant potential for net energy output and net profit, as well as positive effects on environmental impacts, although there are trade-offs in certain areas. Regional sustainability score depends on the availability of agricultural residues, with some regions benefiting more than others. The findings can guide decision-makers in promoting agricultural bio-energy development for regional sustainability.

Summary: The world's population is growing rapidly and is expected to reach over 8 billion by 2022. However, there are still 870 million people who don't have enough food to eat, mostly concentrated in developing countries. By 2050, the population is projected to reach 9 billion, causing severe food scarcity and hindering global food security. This paper explores the drivers of food insecurity and proposes sustainable solutions such as value addition in food processing, biotechnological options, and integration of nutrient-dense food crops.

Summary: Accelerating challenges have led to a growing interest in assessing the resilience and sustainability of future developments. Many countries have adopted the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for sustainable development goals (SDGs), which include resilience as a component of sustainability. However, the SDGs have been criticized for not thoroughly evaluating resilience. This study compares the SDGs indicators with a comprehensive baseline resilience framework (BRF) and evaluates the extent to which the SDGs measure resilience.

Summary: Rural ecosystems are of vital importance for human well-being and economic development as they provide essential resources and various services. However, a narrow focus on provisioning services has led to landscape standardization and a decline in biodiversity and ecosystem services. Diverse rural landscapes can enrich ecosystem services, but there is a need to understand the trade-offs and synergies between land use, landscape, and ecosystem services. We conducted an empirical analysis to assess the perception of ecosystem services provided by different rural landscapes in the Tuscany region.
