Summary: According to a retrospective chart review, preoperative ultrasound can predict regional metastases in papillary thyroid microcarcinoma to some extent. The size of the tumor, distance to the thyroid capsule or trachea, tumor contour, and presence of autoimmune thyroiditis are not correlated with regional metastasis. Nodules in the superior or midpole are associated with central or lateral neck metastases, while nodules in the isthmus or inferior pole are only associated with central neck metastases. Therefore, active surveillance can be considered for patients with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma adjacent to the thyroid capsule.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether surgery can achieve significant survival benefits in patients with larger tumor diameter of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), in order to evaluate the feasibility of expanding the threshold for active surveillance. The results showed that as the tumor diameter increases, the risk of death without surgical treatment gradually increases, but there may be a threshold. Within this range, a non-surgical approach may be a potentially viable management strategy. However, beyond this range, surgery may be more beneficial for patient survival.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of histologic variants and grade on the prognosis of salivary cancer. The results showed that histologic variants had different mortality risks, but these differences were diminished in multivariable analysis. In contrast, worsening grade was strongly associated with deteriorating survival. Integrating grade into stage can improve the predictive ability of the current staging system.

Summary: Elective lymph node dissection (ELND) is commonly performed for early-stage oral cavity squamous cell carcinomas (OCSCC) with clinically negative necks. However, the validity of depth of invasion (DOI) as a predictor of lymph node positivity (pN+) varies in different OC sites. This study found that lymphovascular invasion and histologic grade were strong independent predictors of pN+ in cN0 OCSCC, while DOI was not associated with pN+ in the overall OCSCC population, but showed some predictive value in the oral tongue subset.
