The ignition and onset melting temperatures, surface morphologies before and after ignition, as well as combustion products of Mg-xAl (x = 0, 3, 6 and 8 wt.%) alloys were investigated. The results demonstrate that ignition process of Mg-xAl alloys in this research, take to be pyrolysis/gasification and piloted ignition of pyrolysis volatiles. Besides, Mg-OAl and Mg-3Al alloys gasification mainly occur in solid state and burning occur in the solid state. Whereas Mg-6Al and Mg-8Al alloys gasification mainly occur in liquid state, and burning also occur in the liquid state. So with Al content increase, burning occurred state changes from solid to liquid.
