Association between acute exposure to environmental air pollution and fragility hip fractures

Giovanni Adami, Pietro Olivi, Marco Pontalti, Camilla Benini, Leandro Ramazzini, Bruno Magnan, Eugenia Bertoldo, Davide Gatti, Angelo Fassio, Maurizio Rossini, Stefano Negri

Summary: This study found that exposure to PM10 pollution is associated with an increased risk of fragility hip fractures. The risk was found to increase by 7.7% for every 10 μg/m3 increase in PM10 concentration. Further research is needed to determine the exact role of air pollution in fracture risk.

Tapering glucocorticoids and risk of flare in rheumatoid arthritis on biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs)

Giovanni Adami, Angelo Fassio, Maurizio Rossini, Davide Bertelle, Francesca Pistillo, Camilla Benini, Ombretta Viapiana, Davide Gatti

Summary: Reducing glucocorticoid doses in rheumatoid arthritis patients can effectively decrease the risk of disease flare-ups. However, choosing the right tapering strategy remains challenging. The study found that tapering glucocorticoids to doses of 2.5 mg/day or below was associated with a higher risk of flare, suggesting the need for better tapering strategies to reduce the risk of recurrence in rheumatoid arthritis patients on biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs.

Ultrasonographic non-radiographic erosions could predict the efficacy of belimumab in articular systemic lupus erythematosus

Giovanni Orsolini, Francesca Mastropaolo, Eleonora Favaro, Anna Piccinelli, Davide Bertelle, Ombretta Viapiana, Maurizio Rossini, Riccardo Bixio

Summary: The aim of this study was to characterize lupus-related arthritis and assess the efficacy of belimumab in treating articular manifestations of SLE. The results showed that belimumab treatment significantly improved disease activity in patients without erosions, but had no effect on patients with erosions. Additionally, the presence of ultrasound-detected erosions was associated with a decreased efficacy of belimumab. However, further research is needed to confirm these findings due to the small sample size.

Summary: This study assessed the efficacy of belimumab in treating joint and skin manifestations in a nationwide cohort of SLE patients. The results showed that belimumab significantly improved joint and skin symptoms and reduced the use of glucocorticoids. A significant proportion of patients who did not achieve complete remission initially achieved remission during follow-up.

Secukinumab retention rate is greater in patients with psoriatic arthritis presenting with axial involvement

G. Adami, L. Idolazzi, C. Benini, E. Fracassi, A. Carletto, O. Viapiana, D. Gatti, M. Rossini, A. Fassio

Summary: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is effectively treated with biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs). A real-life observational study was conducted to compare the retention rates of IL-17 inhibitors and TNF inhibitors in PsA patients. The study found that secukinumab had a trend towards better retention rate compared to TNF inhibitors, especially in patients with axial involvement.

Factors associated with radiographic progression in rheumatoid arthritis starting biological diseases modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (bDMARDs)

Giovanni Adami, Angelo Fassio, Francesca Pistillo, Camilla Benini, Ombretta Viapiana, Maurizio Rossini, Davide Gatti

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with radiological progression in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients treated with biological DMARDs (bDMARDs). The results showed that baseline erosive disease, higher disease activity during treatment, younger age, and monotherapy were independently associated with the development of bone erosions. Additionally, the study team developed a predictive model that accurately forecasted the occurrence of new erosions in patients receiving bDMARDs.
