Summary: This study evaluated the effects of constant rate infusion of HES 130/0.4 on renal biomarkers in dogs. The results indicated that in hypoalbuminemic dogs, the dose and rate of HES infusion did not lead to significant changes in the investigated biomarkers of kidney injury. Further prospective studies are needed to assess the renal safety profile of low-molecular-weight HES administration in more severely affected dogs.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate urinary NGAL as a predictor of changes in kidney transplant function, finding that high urinary NGAL levels may indicate graft dysfunction or urinary tract infections in clinically stable kidney transplant recipients beyond the first year post-transplantation.

Summary: This study investigated the association between urinary NGAL levels and mortality and dependence on renal replacement therapy in patients with severe acute kidney injury undergoing continuous venovenous hemodiafiltration. The results suggest that urinary NGAL may serve as a clinical biomarker for risk prediction and prognosis evaluation in these patients.

Summary: New compounds with potent inhibitory activity on NGAL-induced fibrosis and inflammation have been identified. These inhibitors showed promising effects in improving cardiac function in myocardial infarction models and preventing renal fibrosis in chronic kidney disease models. They may be potential therapeutic options for diseases involving NGAL.

Summary: Invasive and metastatic tumor cells exhibit increased migration and invasion, which can be targeted therapeutically. Lipocalin 2 (LCN2) is a potential therapeutic target in various tumor types and promotes invasion and migration. This study demonstrates that LCN2 promotes actin polymerization, invasion, and migration by inhibiting actin glutathionylation. Inhibiting LCN2 function leads to decreased migration and invasion, suggesting that LCN2 is a potential therapeutic target in invasive tumors.

Summary: This study evaluated the predictive power of the CSA-NGAL score in stratifying patients with postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) after cardiac surgery. The results showed that the CSA-NGAL score has high sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value. It can be used to improve clinical decision-making and resource allocation for high-risk patients.

Summary: This study analyzed the concentrations of renal biomarkers (osteopontin, cystatin C, and NGAL) in neonates and found that prematurity may lead to increased excretion of osteopontin and cystatin C, but not NGAL. The excretion of NGAL and cystatin C may change during the first weeks of a premature neonate's life, but osteopontin does not.

Summary: Sepsis is a life-threatening condition in neonates, and its diagnosis is challenging. This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of NGAL as a biomarker for early detection of neonatal sepsis. NGAL levels showed significant differences between sepsis cases and controls, and were significantly higher in non-survivors. NGAL demonstrated strong discriminatory power and could potentially serve as a promising diagnostic marker for neonatal sepsis.

Summary: Vaccination against SARS-2 has been proven to prevent the development of serious diseases in COVID-19 patients. However, the effect of vaccination on outcomes in COVID-19 patients requiring intensive care is still unclear. This study found that the risk of mortality in unvaccinated patients was higher compared to the vaccinated group, even after adjusting for gender and comorbidity index.

Summary: Malnutrition is common in critically ill patients in the ICU, but there are few scoring systems available to assess nutritional risk in this population. In this study, the use of ultrasound to measure rectus abdominis and rectus femoris muscle thickness was found to be a reliable and easily applicable method for determining nutritional risk in the ICU, as it showed a correlation with established scoring systems.
