Summary: Large fluctuations in blood glucose levels greatly impact the health and life span of elderly individuals. This study found that centenarians have relatively small fluctuations in blood glucose levels, and maintaining an average blood glucose level and keeping blood glucose fluctuations in the normal range is conducive to longevity.

Summary: Using samples from the New England Centenarian Study, researchers characterized the serum proteome of centenarians, their offspring, and age-matched controls. They identified protein signatures associated with longer survival in centenarians and younger individuals and found similarities in aging markers between centenarians and short-lived cohorts. The study provides specific circulating biomarkers of healthy aging and longevity, suggesting potential mechanisms to prolong health and support longevity.

Summary: This study found that at least one intracellular proteolytic system in the peripheral blood lymphocytes of centenarians is as abundant as in young individuals, while the elderly population shows a significant decrease. The study aimed to investigate how different types of cells in long-lived people maintain the quality and quantity of their proteins. The results suggested that robust proteodynamics may contribute to longevity, as most aspects of cellular protein maintenance showed better performance in centenarians compared to the average elderly, approaching levels seen in young individuals, except for mitochondrial status and chaperone function.

Summary: Health literacy is crucial for improving personal and public health. However, the Western-derived measurements of health often overlook indigenous perceptions, leading to disparities in health outcomes between indigenous and non-indigenous populations. China, with its large population, only officially introduced the concept of health literacy in 2008. The current measures of health literacy in China are mainly based on Western constructs and do not fit well with the unique combination of traditional Chinese and Western medicine in China. Understanding health perceptions from a traditional Chinese medicine perspective is essential for global health management.

Summary: In Western medicine, dementia affects cognition, mental health, and physical abilities, while Traditional Chinese Medicine explains it from the perspectives of brain dystrophy, Spleen-Kidney weakness, Blood stasis, and Phlegm stagnation. Ancient Chinese physicians believed that dementia manifests not only as cognitive symptoms but also as psychiatric disorders and sleep disturbance, offering various treatment methods.

Summary: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has potential for preventing and managing type 2 diabetes through nonpharmacological interventions such as healthy diet, physical activity, emotional therapy, and acupuncture. Studies have shown significant improvement in blood glucose status for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes patients after TCM non-drug interventions. However, the methodological quality of clinical trials involving TCM is generally low and further exploration is needed to validate its effectiveness and underlying mechanism for preventing type 2 diabetes.

Summary: In the context of serious environmental pollution, the potential harm caused by toxic heavy metals in traditional Chinese medicine materials (TCMMs) has seriously affected the sustainable development of traditional Chinese medicine. This study found that a portion of TCMM samples exceeded the domestic standards for cadmium (Cd) content, and the decrease in soil acidity and improvement of Cd-hyperaccumulator cultivation conditions are crucial for ensuring the sustainable development of traditional Chinese medicine.

Summary: Coronary microvascular disease (CMVD) is common in patients with cardiovascular risk factors and is associated with an increased risk of adverse cardiovascular events. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), with its clinical advantages of syndrome differentiation and individualized treatment, shows potential efficacy and action mechanisms for CMVD. However, there are still many scientific issues and gaps in the research of CMVD.
