Eusociality, a form of animal social organization involving sterile and reproductive castes, is a rare, but highly ecologically successful form of life. There are striking examples of eusocial species with populations that are ecologically dominant in their native ranges, as well as remarkably successful globally as invasive species; prominent examples include fire ants and yellow jacket wasps. At the same time, there have been startling population declines in other social insects, notably bumble bees. Here, we explore the possible role of phenotypic plasticity in invasion biology and declines of social insect species. This topic is of particular interest, because social insects exhibit extreme behavioral, developmental, physiological, and morphological plasticity. It has been suggested that this plasticity may contribute to ecological dominance in some species, but could be a liability or cost to others. In this review, we explore the relationship between phenotypic plasticity, invasion biology, and vulnerability to global change in social insects. By considering plasticity at three levels-molecular, individual, and colony-we suggest ways in which considerations of phenotypic plasticity may help in managing social insect populations.

Structured pain-free exercise progressively improves ankle-brachial index and walking ability in patients with claudication and compressible arteries: an observational study

Fabio Manfredini, Luca Traina, Vincenzo Gasbarro, Sofia Straudi, Lorenzo Caruso, Fabio Fabbian, Paolo Zamboni, Roberto Manfredini, Nicola Lamberti

Summary: In patients with PAD, supervised exercise at near-moderate pain levels can improve walking ability but not ABI values. A structured pain-free exercise program over 6 months showed improvements in ABI, functional, and cardiovascular parameters in patients with claudication and compressible vessels.

Construct Validity and Responsiveness of the COVID-19 Yorkshire Rehabilitation Scale (C19-YRS) in a Cohort of Italian Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients

Sofia Straudi, Fabio Manfredini, Andrea Baroni, Giada Milani, Giulia Fregna, Nicola Schincaglia, Riccardo Androni, Antonella Occhi, Manoj Sivan, Nicola Lamberti

Summary: This study examined the responsiveness and construct validity of the COVID-19 Yorkshire Rehabilitation Scale (C19-YRS) in Italian hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The results showed that post-COVID syndrome (PCS) symptoms were still present after 12 weeks post-infection, but reduced at 26 weeks. The C19-YRS was found to be valuable in screening, assessing severity, and monitoring the persistence of symptoms.

Giovanni Piva, Anna Crepaldi, Nicola Lamberti, Lorenzo Caruso, Natascia Rinaldo, Roberto Manfredini, Pablo Jesus Lopez-Soto, Vincenzo Gasbarro, Fabio Manfredini, Alda Storari

Summary: This observational study aimed to monitor the 5-year trends of kidney function in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and concomitant chronic kidney disease (CKD) enrolled or not enrolled into a rehabilitative exercise program. The results showed that patients in the exercise program had improved kidney function and better clinical outcomes compared to those receiving usual care.

The Value of Infrared Thermography to Assess Foot and Limb Perfusion in Relation to Medical, Surgical, Exercise or Pharmacological Interventions in Peripheral Artery Disease: A Systematic Review

Giovanni Piva, Anna Crepaldi, Gladiol Zenunaj, Lorenzo Caruso, Natascia Rinaldo, Vincenzo Gasbarro, Nicola Lamberti, Pablo Jesus Lopez-Soto, Fabio Manfredini

Summary: This systematic review provides an overview of the use of infrared thermography (IRT) in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD). The analysis of 21 included studies suggests that IRT shows promise as a diagnostic method and outcome measure in PAD patients, although concerns about the overall quality of the studies were raised.

The Issue of Gender Bias Represented in Authorship in the Fields of Exercise and Rehabilitation: A 5-Year Research in Indexed Journals

Natascia Rinaldo, Giovanni Piva, Suzanne Ryder, Anna Crepaldi, Alba Pasini, Lorenzo Caruso, Roberto Manfredini, Sofia Straudi, Fabio Manfredini, Nicola Lamberti

Summary: Despite progress, gender bias still exists in scientific publication authorship. This study examines trends in authorship by gender in the field of exercise sciences and rehabilitation in the last 5 years. The results show that while women are almost equally represented as first authors, bias against women remains in the last authorship position, regardless of geographical area and journal ranking.

Lower All-Cause Mortality Risk in Females and Males with Peripheral Artery Disease following Pain-Free Home-Based Exercise: A 7-Year Observational Study

Nicola Lamberti, Luca Traina, Caterina Savrie, Elpiniki Tsolaki, Natascia Rinaldo, Sofia Straudi, Franco Guerzoni, Nicola Napoli, Roberto Manfredini, Vincenzo Gasbarro, Fabio Manfredini

Summary: This study evaluated the sex-specific difference in response to an exercise program among patients with peripheral artery disease and claudication. The results showed that women had a significantly higher 7-year survival rate and lower hospitalization and amputation rates in the exercise group compared to the control group. Therefore, active participation in a home-based pain-free exercise program can reduce the risk of adverse clinical outcomes and improve long-term outcomes, especially for women in PAD patients.

Exercise-based functional recovery from severe upper extremity arterial disease due to bilateral subclavian artery obstruction in a person with giant cell arteritis

Fabio Manfredini, Gladiol Zenunaj, Luca Traina, Vincenzo Gasbarro, Nicola Lamberti

Summary: We present a case of a 71-year-old woman with giant cell arteritis and bilateral subclavian and axillary obstruction, who suffered from severe arm claudication that was unresponsive to corticosteroid treatment. Before considering revascularization, she underwent a personalized home-based graded exercise program consisting of walking, hand-bike pedaling, and muscle strength training. Over a period of 9 months, the patient showed significant improvements in radial pressure values, hand temperature values, arm endurance, and forearm muscle oxygenation. Home-based graded exercise proved to be an effective noninvasive option for upper limb claudication.

Effects of Exercise, Rehabilitation, and Nutritional Approaches on Body Composition and Bone Density in People with Multiple Sclerosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Natascia Rinaldo, Alba Pasini, Sofia Straudi, Giovanni Piva, Anna Crepaldi, Andrea Baroni, Lorenzo Caruso, Fabio Manfredini, Nicola Lamberti

Summary: People with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) experience decreased bone mineral density and worsening body composition, negatively impacting their quality of life. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effects of nonpharmacological interventions, such as physical activity, nutrition, and rehabilitation, on body composition (BC) and bone mineral density (BMD) in pwMS. The results showed inconsistent positive effects on BC, but high-intensity training and ketogenic diets appeared to be promising interventions. Limited studies considered BMD, and the findings were inconclusive. Further research is needed to confirm these results.

Cortical Oxygenation during a Motor Task to Evaluate Recovery in Subacute Stroke Patients: A Study with Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

Nicola Lamberti, Fabio Manfredini, Francesca Nardi, Andrea Baroni, Giovanni Piva, Anna Crepaldi, Nino Basaglia, Ilaria Casetta, Sofia Straudi

Summary: This study investigated cortical oxygenation changes in subacute stroke patients using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) during a motor task. The findings revealed that the changes in cortical metabolic cost (CMC) during the task were correlated with upper extremity functional recovery, suggesting it could be used as a biomarker for patient selection in rehabilitation.
