Gastric cancer (GC), with high heterogeneity, can be mainly classified into intestinal type and diffuse type according to the Lauren classification system. Although a number of differences were reported between these two types, no study on the Lauren subtype-specific multi-gene signature for evaluation of GC prognosis has been conducted, and the molecular mechanism underlying its poor prognosis has still remained elusive. Therefore, this study aimed to explore subtype-specific multi-gene signature for prognostic prediction in different subtypes of Lauren classification. With combination of the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) algorithm and the Akaike information criterion (AIC), the 3-gene subtype-specific prognostic signature was successfully established in diffuse type GC using GSE62254 dataset. Following the calculation of risk score (RS) based on 3-gene signature, the nomogram models were established to predict 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival in diffuse type GC. Moreover, the prognostic predictive nomogram model of diffuse type GC was also proved to be effective for validation of GSE1549 dataset and by a Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO)-based meta-analysis. In the analysis of the correlation between RS and clinical-pathological characteristics, RS and two genes of the 3-gene signature (EMCN and COL4A5) were found to be positively correlated with peritoneal metastasis. Furthermore, EMCN and COL4A5, rather than CCL11, were proved to be able to enhance the adhesion ability of MKN45 and NUGC4 cells to peritoneal mesothelial cell line HMR-SV5. Eventually, it was proved that COL4A5 promoted peritoneal metastasis by activating Wnt signaling pathway, whereas the upregulation of integrin family genes mediated by FAK-AKT/ERK/STAT3 signaling pathway activation is involved in peritoneal metastasis promotion function of EMCN. Taken together, our study identified the subtype-specific 3-gene signature in diffuse type GC, which could effectively predict the patients' OS and might explain the molecular mechanisms in presence of its poor prognosis.

USP39 attenuates the antitumor activity of cisplatin on colon cancer cells dependent on p53

Jiahui Yuan, Xiaomei Li, Yuqi Zhang, Gongye Zhang, Weipeng Cheng, Weiwei Wang, Yongbin Lei, Gang Song

Summary: This study reveals that USP39 is associated with the sensitivity of colon cancer cells to Cisplatin. Depletion of USP39 enhances Cisplatin-induced apoptosis, while overexpression of USP39 attenuates apoptosis. Further studies demonstrate that USP39 depletion promotes apoptosis induced by Cisplatin, which is related to the induction of oxidative stress and DNA damage response. Additionally, the regulation of USP39 depends on p53, as knocking down USP39 results in p53 upregulation and prolonged half-life.

Five EMT-related genes signature predicts overall survival and immune environment in microsatellite instability-high gastric cancer

Mili Zhang, Can Cao, Xu Li, Qisheng Gu, Yixin Xu, Ziyan Zhu, Duogang Xu, Shanshan Wei, Haonan Chen, Yuqin Yang, Hugh Gao, Liang Yu, Jikun Li

Summary: This study identified the EMT signaling pathway as a representative pathway for predicting the survival of MSI-H gastric cancer (GC) patients. A novel five-gene signature (CALU, PCOLCE2, PLOD2, SGCD, and THBS2) was established from the EMT signaling gene set for disease outcome prediction. The five genes were found to be abundantly expressed in cancer-associated fibroblasts, and patients with different risk groups based on the five-gene signature showed distinct patterns of tumor immune microenvironment.

A Discussion on Associating THz Safety with 5G Safety

Liangdeng Yu, Sakhorn Rimjaem

Summary: This article discusses the development of mid-infrared free-electron laser and terahertz (THz) radiation, with a focus on THz safety and its association with 5G safety. It is pointed out that radiation safety depends not only on photon energy but also on radiation power. The study confirms the safety of 5G based on the currently used transmission station power, while the safety of THz is still uncertain. Further research suggestions are provided.

Room-Temperature Magnetoelectric Coupling in Atomically Thin ε-Fe2O3

Yuzhu Wang, Peng Wang, Hao Wang, Bingqian Xu, Hui Li, Mo Cheng, Wang Feng, Ruofan Du, Luying Song, Xia Wen, Xiaohui Li, Junbo Yang, Yao Cai, Jun He, Zhenxing Wang, Jianping Shi

Summary: An ingenious space-confined chemical vapor deposition strategy was used to synthesize atomically thin non-layered epsilon-Fe2O3 single crystals and revealed the room-temperature long-range ferrimagnetic order. Strong ferroelectricity and its switching behavior were discovered in atomically thin epsilon-Fe2O3, along with an anomalous thickness-dependent coercive voltage. The robust room-temperature magnetoelectric coupling was uncovered by controlling the magnetism with an electric field, demonstrating the multiferroic feature of atomically thin epsilon-Fe2O3. This work represents a substantial leap in the controllable synthesis of 2D multiferroics with robust magnetoelectric coupling, and also paves the way for practical applications in low-energy-consumption electric-writing/magnetic-reading devices.

A hierarchical CoNi @ nitrogen doped C/macroporous C composite derived from a new bimetallic MOF and Juncus effusus as a broadband electromagnetic wave absorber

Summary: Biomass-derived carbon is highly valued for its unique form, wide range of sources, and low cost. However, the construction of efficient biomass-based microwave absorbers with hierarchical structures and multicomponent magnetic/dielectric structures is still a significant challenge. In this study, CoNi-MOF was self-assembled in situ on Juncus effusus, and CoNi/NC/C composites were prepared by in situ pyrolysis. The morphology, electromagnetic parameters, specific surface area, and porous structure of the composites were controlled by the pyrolysis temperature. The composite exhibited excellent microwave absorption performance, attributed to various mechanisms such as conduction loss, dipole polarization, interface polarization, magnetic loss, and impedance matching.

Autoignition of methyl palmitate in low to intermediate temperature: Experiments in rapid compression machine and kinetic modeling

Wei Zhou, Yueying Liang, Xinzhe Pei, Yongxiang Zhang, Liang Yu, Xingcai Lu

Summary: The autoignition characteristics of methyl palmitate, a waxy solid at room temperature, were investigated using a heated rapid compression machine. The results showed that the increase in compressed pressure, equivalence ratio, and oxygen mole fraction had a negative effect on ignition delay times, and the dependence on compressed pressure and equivalence ratio decreased with increasing temperature. The simulation results revealed a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) behavior at compressed temperatures of 780-830 K.

Summary: A study found that the antioxidant protein GmolPrx1 secreted by the male accessory gland plays a crucial role in protecting and maintaining the quality of stored sperm in Grapholita molesta females. Siyuan Sun, Weijie Bao, Fan Yang, Xingru Yan, Yang Sun, Ge Zhang, Wang Yang, Yongfeng Li

Summary: A novel strategy was developed to fabricate FeNx-doped carbon quantum dots (Fe-N-CQDs) for selective detection of Cu2+ ions as a fluorescence probe. The Fe-N-CQDs were synthesized through efficient electrolysis of a carbon cloth electrode, which was coated with monoatomic iron-anchored nitrogen-doped carbon (Fe-N-C). The obtained Fe-N-CQDs showed blue fluorescence with a quantum yield (QY) of 7.5% and exhibited a wide linear relationship between Cu2+ concentration and fluorescence intensity.
