Summary: This study found that two potential functional SNPs on the HDAC9 gene are significantly associated with survival rate in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Furthermore, these SNPs are also related to the expression levels of the HDAC9 gene. These findings suggest that these SNPs may serve as biomarkers for predicting survival in ESCC patients.

Summary: Chronic inflammation is closely associated with the development of esophageal adenocarcinoma and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. A new transgenic mouse model expressing human IL-1 beta has been used to investigate the consequences of chronic inflammation in the oral and esophageal squamous epithelia. This model has expanded the understanding of the key pathways involved in inflammation-driven esophageal diseases.

Summary: A study sequencing 52 tumor samples from 33 ESCC patients who received radiotherapy combined with 5-fluorouracil/platinum revealed the impact of chemoradiotherapy on clonal evolution, with MYC gain potentially serving as a marker for therapy resistance. The findings enhance understanding of therapeutic resistance and support the rationale for precision chemoradiotherapy.

Summary: Analysis of intratumoral microbiota in patients with esophageal cancer reveals a microbiota signature that is associated with chemoimmunotherapy response, showing that Streptococcus stimulates CD8+ T-cell infiltration and induces a favorable response. These findings suggest the potential clinical utility of intratumoral microbiota for cancer immunotherapy.

Summary: In this study, the researchers identified a significant module and several hub genes associated with lymph node metastasis in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Specifically, IRS1 was found to be significantly correlated with metastasis and its decreased expression predicted poor overall survival (OS) in ESCC patients. These findings highlight the potential of IRS1 and other hub genes as biomarkers for prognosis and provide new insights into the initiation and progression of ESCC.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prognostic significance of changes in the level of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) before and after surgery on the long-term prognosis of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The results showed that ESCC patients with high preoperative CEA level had poorer prognosis regardless of the changes of postoperative CEA level.

Summary: Immune checkpoint inhibitors as second- or later-line therapy may improve overall response rate and overall survival for patients with locally advanced or metastatic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors might experience fewer treatment-related adverse events, especially grade >= 3, compared with those treated with chemotherapy.

Summary: This study analyzed the association between the status of lymph node (LN) metastasis and survival outcomes in cT4 stage esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients treated with definitive radiotherapy (RT) or chemoradiotherapy (dCRT). The results showed that LN metastasis did not correlate with overall survival (OS) in the cT4 ESCC patients. Furthermore, the cT4 ESCC patients had a higher prevalence of local recurrence.

Summary: RRAD is a protein associated with diabetes, highly expressed in type 2 diabetes patients and acts as a biomarker for congestive heart failure. It plays a crucial role in the progression and metastasis of tumor cells, acting as an oncogene or tumor suppressor gene depending on the cancer and cell type. RRAD regulates various cellular activities in tumor cells, including division, motility, apoptosis, and energy metabolism, by modulating gene expression and interacting with downstream effectors.
