For its scope and the breadth of its available resources, the university system is one of the keys to implementing and propagating policies, with sustainability policies being among them. Building on sustainability performance in universities, this study aimed to: Identify the procedures deployed by universities to measure sustainability; detect the strengths and weaknesses of the Spanish university system (SUS) sustainability practice; analyse the SUS contributions to sustainability-related Research, Development and Innovation (R & D+I); and assess the efficacy of such practices and procedures as reported in the literature. The indicators of scientific activity were defined by applying scientometric techniques to analyse the journal (Web of Science) and European project (CORDIS) databases, along with reports issued by national institutions. The findings showed that measuring sustainability in the SUS is a very recent endeavour and that one of the strengths is the university community's engagement with the ideal. Nonetheless, high performance is still elusive in most of the items analysed. Whereas universities account for nearly 90 % of the Spanish papers published in the WoS subject category, Green and Sustainable Science and Technology, their contribution to research projects is meagre. A divide still exists in the SUS between policies and results, although the gap has been narrowing in recent years.

Assessing citizen science methods in IWRM for a new science shop: a bibliometric approach

Daniela De Filippo, Elias Sanz Casado, Francesca Berteni, Francesca Barisani, Nuria Bautista Puig, Giovanna Grossi

Summary: This study aims to detect scientific activities in water resources management field using citizen science methods through bibliometric approach. Results show an increasing trend of studies and publications with participatory perspective, with Australia, The Netherlands and Spain leading in production. The scarcity of Italian studies, especially on sustainable urban drainage, indicates a promising field of work for the new science shop at Brescia.

Summary: The Antarctic ecosystem services are diverse and important, encompassing various dimensions such as global climate modulation, cultural heritage, and scientific knowledge. However, they are currently facing substantial challenges to remain sustainable, with potential conflicts arising from increased utilization and demands for tourism opportunities. To conserve these services for future generations, implementing different ecosystem service framework tools within the Antarctic Treaty policy context is crucial.

The practical implementation of open access policies and mandates in Spanish public universities

Daniela De Filippo, Jorge Manana-Rodriguez

Summary: This study analyzed the open access production of Spanish public universities from 2011 to 2020 and found that these universities have higher rates of OA publications, with a preference for Green Published and DOAJ Gold publications. It was also observed that OA publications are more cited than non-OA publications, and there is a strong relationship between visibility, funding, and open access. Additionally, variables such as proportion of DOAJ Gold publications, impact of Hybrid publications, and percentage of documents in the Bronze way were identified as predictors of above-average percentage of OA publications in universities.

What are the real environmental impacts of Antarctic tourism? Unveiling their importance through a comprehensive meta-analysis

P. Tejedo, J. Benayas, D. Cajiao, Y. -F. Leung, D. De Filippo, D. Liggett

Summary: This study presents a meta-analysis of scholarly publications on the environmental impacts of Antarctic tourism. The findings suggest that the negative effects of tourism on the environment have not been adequately addressed, with limited attention given to cumulative impacts and long-term monitoring programs. Furthermore, there is a lack of connection between research and policy or management. The study highlights the need for a comprehensive strategy to investigate and monitor the environmental impacts of tourism in Antarctica.

Influence of research on open science in the public policy sphere

Daniela De Filippo, Pablo Sastron-Toledo

Summary: This paper analyzes the scientific activity related to open science in Spain and its impact on public policy from a bibliometric perspective. The projects and publications on open science by Spanish centers from 2010 to 2020 are studied. Policy documents using papers related to open science are analyzed to examine their influence on policymaking. A total of 142 projects and 1491 publications are analyzed, with 15% of them being mentioned in policy documents. The publications cited in policy documents display high proportions of international collaboration, open access publication, and publication in first-quartile journals. The findings highlight the government's role in implementing open science policies and funding open science research. The government agencies that promote and fund open science research are shown to use that research in their institutional reports, a process known as knowledge flow feedback. Other non-academic actors are also observed to utilize the knowledge produced by open science research, indicating the expansion of the open science movement beyond academia.

Mapping open science at Spanish universities. Analysis of higher education systems

Daniela De-Filippo, Maria-Luisa Lascurain-Sanchez, Flor Sanchez

Summary: This study analyzes the implementation of open science in Spanish universities from the perspectives of regulations, knowledge production, research results, and perception by different academic actors. The results show an increasing interest in open-science activities, with a growing number of publications and participation in European projects. However, institutional policies and regulations on open science are limited, focusing mainly on open access. The study also reveals heterogeneity among institutions' practices and implementation, with the Catalonian university system standing out for its open-science policy development and intense research activity in the field.

Detecting trends in sustainability publications: research development and dynamics in Green and sustainable science and technology category

Andres Pandiella-Dominique, Noria Bautista-Puig, Daniela De Filippo

Summary: The sustainability movement began in the early seventies, but it was not until the publication of the Brundtland Report in 1987 that it gained institutional recognition. The academic community's engagement with the movement came in the form of sustainability science, which developed in line with the dynamics of a new scientific discipline. This review analyzed the development of the field based on papers in the 'Green and sustainable science and technology' category on WoS, identifying different clusters of journals and mainstream and emerging subjects through bibliometric methodology.
