Native plant species were screened for their remediation potential for the removal of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminated soil of Bagnoli brownfield site (Southern Italy). Soils at this site contain all of the PAHs congeners at concentration levels well above the contamination threshold limits established by Italian environmental legislation for residential/recreational land use, which represent the remediation target. The concentration of 13 High Molecular Weight Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in soil rhizosphere, plants roots and plants leaves was assessed in order to evaluate native plants suitability for a gentle remediation of the study area. Analysis of soil microorganisms are provides important knowledge about bioremediation approach. Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria are the main phyla of bacteria observed in polluted soil. Functional metagenomics showed changes in dioxygenases, laccase, protocatechuate, and benzoate-degrading enzyme genes. Indolacetic acid production, siderophores release, exopolysaccharides production and ammonia production are the key for the selection of the rhizosphere bacterial population. Our data demonstrated that the natural plant-bacteria partnership is the best strategy for the remediation of a PAHs-contaminated soil.

Exploring Soil Pollution Patterns Using Self-Organizing Maps

Ilaria Guagliardi, Aleksander Maria Astel, Domenico Cicchella

Summary: The geochemical composition of bedrock is the key factor determining elemental concentrations in soil, while anthropogenic factors have a lesser impact. In this study, soil samples from Cosenza and Rende in southern Italy were analyzed for elemental concentrations to identify the sources and define soil quality. The results showed that soil elemental associations were controlled by chemical and mineralogical factors, as well as soil-forming processes.

Factors influencing the bioavailability of some selected elements in the agricultural soil of a geologically varied territory: The Campania region (Italy) case study

Annalise Guarino, Stefano Albanese, Domenico Cicchella, Pooria Ebrahimi, Salvatore Dominech, Lucia Rita Pacifico, Giuseppe Rofrano, Federico Nicodemo, Antonio Pizzolante, Carolina Allocca, Nunzio Romano, Benedetto De Vivo, Annamaria Lima

Summary: The bioavailability of major and trace elements in topsoil samples from the Campania region of Southern Italy was evaluated. The study found that Ca, K, and Mg had higher bioavailability, which is beneficial for agricultural productivity and environmental quality. Additionally, the inclusion of grain size distribution and organic matter content improved the predictive capability of Ca, K, and Mg. This study contributes to a better understanding of the spatial variability of chemical elements in soil.

Potentially toxic elements in the soils of Campi Flegrei (south Italy) and the immediate surroundings: Spatial distribution, origin and probabilistic human health risk

Stefano Albanese, Pooria Ebrahimi, Antonio Aruta, Domenico Cicchella, Benedetto De Vivo, Annamaria Lima

Summary: This article investigates the distribution of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and their impact on human health in the active volcanic field of Campi Flegrei in southern Italy. The study finds higher concentrations of certain elements in the urban area, indicating anthropogenic activities, while other parts show higher levels of elements associated with pyroclastic deposits and weathering. Health risk modeling suggests that younger children have a higher risk of carcinogenic health effects from lead exposure through inhalation.

Summary: This study examines the geochemical distribution of La, Ce, Sc, and Y in the soil samples from the Campania region in Italy and their interaction with other elements. The results show significantly higher concentrations of these elements compared to European and Italian soils, with their concentrations being influenced by lithologic substrate and soil alteration.

Summary: The study investigates the relationship between fault system and nonvolcanic gas vents in the south-eastern sector of the Matese Massif in Italy. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the researchers reconstruct the structural architecture of the area and conclude that young normal faults play a crucial role in gas migration. The results from CO2 flux and geoelectrical surveys support this understanding and indicate that the NW-SE striking fault is the primary pathway for gas migration.
