In the context of climate change, chestnut fertilization is receiving great attention in the Mediterranean basin, due to the increase in the unpredictability of the pluviometric regime which makes it difficult to determine the optimal timing of fertilizer applications. The purpose of this work was to assess the suitability of fertilizers with mechanisms for nutrient protection on the increase of tree nutritional status and crop productivity. Four fertilizers with restricted nutrient solubility were tested: Bioscape 5:14:7 (32.8% organic matter (OM)); Humix 13:3:5 (80.1% OM); Exactyon AG 6:15:8 (37.7% N and 33.1% P encapsulated); and Exactyon AG 18:5:13 (47% N encapsulated, 28.8% N as urea coated with ammonium sulfate). The trials were carried out for four years in Moimenta and Meixedo, NE Portugal, which also received a non-fertilized control. In Moimenta the ground was managed by tillage and in Meixedo by a cover of natural vegetation. Exactyon AG 18:5:13, being the most concentrated in N and B, gave significantly higher cumulative (2015-2018) nut yields (146.6 kg tree(-1)) than the control (52.3 kg tree(-1)) in the Moimenta trial. The results were explained by the increase in leaf N and B levels, which in the control treatment were in the deficiency range. In Meixedo there were not found significant differences among treatments, likely due to the competition by cover crop for resources. The results showed that the response of the trees to the fertilizers relied mainly in their content in nutrients limiting to the agroecosystem and less in the mechanisms of nutrient protection.

Biochar and zeolites did not improve phosphorus uptake or crop productivity in a field trial performed in an irrigated intensive farming system

Margarida Arrobas, Joao Decker, Bruna L. Feix, Wilson Godoy, Carlos A. Casali, Carlos M. Correia, Manuel Angelo Rodrigues

Summary: Soil conditioners like biochar and zeolites may not significantly affect crop yields and elemental composition in the short term, but phosphorus application can increase crop yields and nutrient concentrations in plant tissues. Biochar increases total soil organic carbon, while zeolites increase soil potassium levels.

Controlled-release and stabilized fertilizers are equivalent options to split application of ammonium nitrate in a double maize-oats cropping system

Margarida Arrobas, Jose Carlos Chiochetta, Leticia Damo, Ana Carolina Julio, Igor Pereira Hendges, Americo Wagner, Wilson Itamar Godoy, Luis Cesar Cassol, M. Angelo Rodrigues

Summary: This study compared the effects of using controlled-release and stabilized fertilizers with the application of conventional fertilizers on maize yield and nitrogen management. The results showed that applying the highest amount of fertilizer resulted in the highest maize yield, but stalk nitrate concentration showed potential as a tool for nitrogen management. Considering equipment suitability and fertilizer prices, these three fertilization strategies are valid options for farmers to consider.

Olive Yield and Physicochemical Properties of Olives and Oil in Response to Nutrient Application under Rainfed Conditions

Ermelinda Silva, Alexandre Goncalves, Sandra Martins, Catia Brito, Helena Ferreira, Luis M. M. Ferreira, Jose Moutinho-Pereira, Manuel Angelo Rodrigues, Carlos M. Correia

Summary: The effects of mineral fertilizers on the physicochemical properties of olives and oil under rainfed conditions were investigated in a three-year study. The results showed that the application of NPKB increased olive yield and improved fruit quality, but had an impact on the phenolics concentrations in fruits and oil. Further research is needed to determine the specific effects of fertilizer treatments on measured variables.

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis on the Use of LCA to Assess the Environmental Impacts of the Composting Process

Lais Fabiana Serafini, Manuel Feliciano, Manuel Angelo Rodrigues, Artur Goncalves

Summary: After the industrial revolution, solid waste generation increased exponentially due to economic and populational growth. The current waste management strategies, such as landfill or waste incineration, produce suboptimal results. Composting is a potentially sustainable option that recycles organic compounds, but its environmental impacts are highly dependent on system boundaries and functional units.

Large Chestnut Trees Did Not Respond to Annual Fertiliser Applications, Requiring a Long-Term Approach to Establishing Effective Fertilisation Plans

Margarida Arrobas, Joao Silva, Mariah Ruaro Busato, Ana Carolina Ferreira, Soraia Raimundo, Abel Pereira, Taciane Finatto, Nilvania Aparecida de Mello, Carlos Manuel Correia, Manuel Angelo Rodrigues

Summary: Due to the value of the European chestnut, research was conducted to establish fertilisation programmes for ecological intensification in orchards. The results showed that chestnut yields were not significantly affected by different NPK fertilisers, but the control treatment had a decreasing trend. The study also highlighted the risks of N loss to the environment and the importance of maintaining herbaceous vegetation during winter.

Combining Zeolites with Early-Maturing Annual Legume Cover Crops in Rainfed Orchards: Effects on Yield, Fatty Acid Composition and Polyphenolic Profile of Olives and Olive Oil

Sandra Martins, Ermelinda Silva, Catia Brito, Luis Pinto, Carlos Martins-Gomes, Alexandre Goncalves, Margarida Arrobas, Manuel Angelo Rodrigues, Carlos M. Correia, Fernando M. Nunes

Summary: Under climate change threats, it is necessary to adopt sustainable practices in rainfed olive orchards to ensure crop yield, olive oil quality, and soil health. The combination of a leguminous cover crop and natural zeolites shows promising results in increasing yield and improving olive oil quality. However, long-term studies are needed to ensure the sustainability of crop yield and olive oil quality.

Under a Tropical Climate and in Sandy Soils, Bat Guano Mineralises Very Quickly, Behaving More like a Mineral Fertiliser than a Conventional Farmyard Manure

Paulo Dimande, Margarida Arrobas, Manuel Angelo Rodrigues

Summary: In sub-Saharan Africa, smallholder farmers rely on local fertiliser resources for soil fertility management. In Vilankulo, Mozambique, farmers have access to bat guano and biochar, but in limited quantities. A study was conducted in a haplic Lixisol to examine the impact of different treatments on maize yield. The results showed that treatments with higher levels of guano and biochar led to higher maize yields, while biochar did not significantly contribute to plant nutrition.

Effect of Bat Guano and Biochar on Okra Yield and Some Soil Properties

Paulo Dimande, Margarida Arrobas, Manuel Angelo Rodrigues

Summary: Since it is difficult for smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa to obtain commercial fertilizers, it is important to optimize the use of local organic resources. A study in VilanKulo, Mozambique, found that in the short term, farmers can benefit from using bat guano to release nutrients, while in the long term, the use of biochar can improve soil properties.

Lettuce response to the application of two commercial leonardites and their effect on soil properties in a growing medium with nitrogen as the main limiting factor

Margarida Arrobas, Monica Andrade, Soraia Raimundo, Sergio Miguel Mazaro, Manuel Angelo Rodrigues

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of two leonardites (Humitec and Humic Gold) and an organic compost (Nutrimais) on lettuce compared to an untreated control. The experiment was conducted in NE Portugal in two seasons. The results showed that the growing season and NPK fertilization significantly affected lettuce dry matter yield (DMY). The organic amendment influenced nutrient concentration in plant tissues and some soil properties, but did not affect DMY. Nutrimais had a positive effect on DMY in the first growing season and in pots without NPK fertilization. Leonardites did not have any significant effect on soil properties, nutrient concentration, or DMY. The increase in lettuce DMY with organic compost was likely due to the supply of nitrogen, which is the most critical limiting factor for plant growth. Therefore, NPK fertilizer and Nutrimais, a compost with a low C/N ratio and nitrogen supply, had the greatest impact on lettuce DMY.

Leonardites Rich in Humic and Fulvic Acids Had Little Effect on Tissue Elemental Composition and Dry Matter Yield in Pot-Grown Olive Cuttings

Margarida Arrobas, Surian Fernanda de Almeida, Soraia Raimundo, Lucas da Silva Domingues, Manuel Angelo Rodrigues

Summary: The use of humic substances, particularly leonardite, has become increasingly popular in agriculture due to its potential benefits for soil properties and plant growth. However, this study found that leonardite-based products did not significantly affect soil properties, tissue elemental composition, or dry matter yield in pot-grown olive plants. In contrast, organic compost was found to increase soil organic carbon and promote plant growth. Understanding the specific effects and limitations of commercial leonardites is important for farmers to make informed decisions on their use.
