It is shown that Mg-Al-oxide catalysts in the vapor-phase condensation of 1-butanol to 2-ethyl-1-hexanol in a flow-type reactor are superior in performance to individual Mg and Al oxides on account of achieving optimal surface concentrations and ratios of acid and base sites due to the formation of Mg-O-Al sites at the phase boundary.
