The Wutai complex is located within the Trans-North China Orogen (TNCO) which marks the collision zone between the Eastern and Western Blocks of the North China Craton (NCC). Here we investigate the timings and mechanisms of Precambrian arc building in Wutai from a suite of newly identified greenstone - felsic tuff - Banded Iron Formation (BIF) - phyllite sequence. Zircon grains from the felsic tuff layer intercalated within the greenstones provide robust constraints on the timing of BIF deposition. Geochemical features of the greenstones and felsic tuff suggest E - MORB and volcanic arc affinity, whereas the BIFs are of submarine hydrothermal origin. Zircon grains in the greenstones define an upper intercept age of 2951 +/- 41 Ma and a lower intercept age of 1845 +/- 190 Ma. Those from the felsic tuff show Pb-207/Pb-206 weighted mean age of 2557 +/- 10 Ma, whereas those from the BIF intercalated with felsic tuff shows an age of 2585 +/- 14 Ma. Metamorphic zircon grains in the BIF define two age populations of ca. 2471 and 1906 Ma. Zircon grains in the phyllite yield an age of 2594 +/- 14 Ma. Kernel density plots define age peaks at 2873 and 2578 Ma marking the major phase of arc building in Wutai. Zircon epsilon Hf (t) values are mostly positive, in the range of 3.15-7.72, suggesting new crustal growth from juvenile/depleted mantle components. Our study provides insights into the Mesoarchean to Neoarchean crust building through subduction-related arc magmatism, followed by Paleoproterozoic metamorphism in the North China Craton.

Evolution of Meso-Cenozoic subduction zones in the ocean-continent connection zone of the eastern South China Block: Insights from gravity and magnetic anomalies

Leilei Lu, Suhua Jiang, Sanzhong Li, Pengcheng Wang, Yan Jiang, Gang Wang, Wen Zhang, Yanhui Suo, M. Santosh

Summary: This study investigates the tectonic evolution history of the ocean-continent connection zone in the eastern South China Block (SCB) using gravity and magnetic methods. The study reveals the presence of undulating Moho discontinuity and deep supra-crustal faults beneath the South China Block, which are associated with the subduction of the (Paleo-) Pacific plates. Additionally, a geologically-indistinct Jurassic magmatic arc is identified along the SCB continental margin. As time progressed, this magmatic arc transformed, indicating an eastward migration or jumping of the Yanshanian subduction along the continental margin of the SCB.

Bastnasite U-Th-Pb age, sulfur isotope and trace elements of the Huangshui'an deposit: Implications for carbonatite-hosted Mo-Pb-REE mineralization in the Qinling Orogenic Belt, China

Jia-Ying Feng, Li Tang, Bo-Chang Yang, M. Santosh, Shou-Ting Zhang, Bo Xu, Sung Won Kim, Yuan-Ming Sheng

Summary: This study provides insights into the age and genesis of the Huangshui'an deposit through field investigation and experimental analysis. Results reveal heterogeneous material sources for the deposit and suggest that Late Triassic carbonatite magmatism and mineralization were controlled by the enriched mantle and thickened lower crust, facilitated by a post-collisional extension setting.

Application of novel hybrid model for land subsidence susceptibility mapping

ZhongJie Shen, M. Santosh, Alireza Arabameri

Summary: Land subsidence is a challenging geo-hazard caused by overexploitation of groundwater and underground cavity collapse. Predicting and mitigating this hazard is difficult due to limitations in monitoring and knowledge. Remote sensing and GPS can help locate and map subsidence, but proper susceptibility maps are generally lacking. Machine learning techniques show promise in preparing these maps, and their application can help prevent natural and human catastrophes and reduce economic losses.

Segmentation of continental Indian plate by the Narmada-Son diffuse plate boundary

Raja Sen, Dibyashakti Panda, Bhaskar Kundu, M. Santosh

Summary: Using data from geodetic measurements and tomography, we propose that the Narmada-Son palaeo-rift is a current diffuse plate boundary that divides the Indian composite plate into two component plates. The collision of the South-Indian plate with the Narmada-Son boundary acts as a pivot point, causing torque and mechanical rotation. Our model aligns with the estimated relative Euler pole positions and explains the Indian composite plate hypothesis, topographic diversity along the rift, and deformation styles across the diffuse plate boundary.

Formation of Tarim Large Igneous Province and Strengthened Lithosphere Revealed Through Machine Learning

Ruixuan Zhang, Zhiguo Cheng, Zhaochong Zhang, Zhen Chen, Richard Ernst, M. Santosh

Summary: This study applies machine learning methods to global datasets of basalts to investigate the role of fluids in the formation of large igneous provinces (LIPs). The results show that the basalts of Tarim LIP in northwestern China exhibit a spatial decrease in their island arc affinity from northeast to southwest, suggesting the influence of fluids released from earlier southward oceanic subduction. Temporally, the decline in fluid activity from 290 Ma basalts to 270 Ma mafic dykes indicates a decrease in fusible components in the mantle source and the generation of a strengthened lithosphere. This study provides new insights into the crucial role of fluids in LIP generation, particularly those associated with ancient subducted slabs.

Early Cretaceous terminal convergence between the North China-Mongolia and Siberia continents: Imprints from the Chagan Obo shear zone in central Inner Mongolia, North China

Yang Wang, Yongfeng Gao, Shengchuan Xu, M. Santosh, Tianjia Jiao

Summary: The Chagan Obo shear zone in central Inner Mongolia is important for understanding the convergence between the North China-Mongolia and Siberia continents. Three deformation zones were identified within the shear zone, and their structural and kinematic characteristics were investigated. Shear indicators such as foliations, mica fish, sigma-type structures, and asymmetric folds suggest thrusting through compression. Muscovite ages indicate that the convergence lasted from Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous. Shoshonitic volcanism and rift basins in the region indicate orogenic collapse in the eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt.

High heat production of the Late Mesozoic Luanchuan granites from East Qinling Orogen, China: Implications for petrogenesis and mineral exploration

Weidong Ren, Fan Yang, Zesheng Qian, Chao Liu, Xinyuan Li, M. Santosh, Fei Xue

Summary: The Shibaogou and Laojunshan plutons in the Luanchuan region, China, are high heat production granites linked to I-, A-, and partly S- type granitoids, aiding in the formation of associated polymetallic deposits. The RHP values of granitoids in the region vary from 1.7 to 14.44, with higher values correlated to higher magma differentiation. These high RHP value intrusions show genetic links with high economic deposits. The RHP contour mapping also identifies potential zones for Mo-W exploration.

Metamorphic evolution of garnet amphibolites from the Fuping Complex: Implications for the Paleoproterozoic subduction-collision history of the Trans-North China Orogen

Han-Hui Wang, Li Tang, M. Santosh, Li-Hui Jia, Tao Zeng, Yuan-Ming Sheng

Summary: In this study, garnet amphibolites from the Wanzi Group in the Fuping Complex along the Trans-North China Orogen (TNCO) were investigated. Petrological features and phase equilibrium modelling revealed a sequential increase in pressure and temperature during the metamorphic process. Zircon U-Pb dating showed that the garnet amphibolites experienced a long-lived post-peak decompression and cooling process during 1.90-1.76 Ga, leading to the final assembly of the North China Craton.

Extremely fractionated magmas linked with W mineralization: Evidence from the Lyangar W-Mo deposit, South Tianshan Orogenic Belt

Xianghui Fei, Zhaochong Zhang, Zhiguo Cheng, M. Santosh, Zhenzhen Gao, Bakhtiar Nurtaev

Summary: Tungsten (W) deposits in the Southern Tianshan Orogenic Belt, Uzbekistan are related to high-Si granites which exsolve magmatic-hydrothermal fluids. The formation mechanism of these granites is still controversial. This study provides new geochronological and geochemical data, showing that the muscovite porphyritic granite is genetically related to W mineralization. The study suggests that extreme fractional crystallization plays a significant role in W enrichment in the granitic melt.
