Various processes for the recovery of cerium from metallurgical, non-metallurgical and secondary sources are reviewed. Cerium is present as a major constituent of primary resources like monazite, bastnasite, etc. Various secondary resources of cerium include phosphogypsum, red mud, blast furnace slag, NiMH batteries, FCC catalyst, glass films, CFLs, catalytic converters, etc. This review encompasses the research carried out for the extraction of cerium by pyro-hydrometallurgical methods followed by separation and purification with flowsheets. Also are enlisted in various processes like solvent extraction, ion exchange, membrane adsorption, ionic liquids, carbon-based nanomaterials, used for purification of cerium from the solution. Besides, the alternate methods to prepare cerium salts like fused salt electrolysis and metallothermic reduction are described.

Hydrometallurgical recycling strategies for recovery of rare earth elements from consumer electronic scraps: a review

Ata Akcil, Yahaya Alhaji Ibrahim, Pratima Meshram, Sandeep Panda, Abhilashb

Summary: The global demand for rare earth elements (REEs) is constantly rising, and using urban waste such as consumer electronic scrap (CE-Scrap) for recycling has the potential to meet this demand. However, commercial extraction and recovery of REEs from recycled CE-Scrap is still below 1%, highlighting the need for further research and development in this area. This article discusses the potential CE-Scrap resources for REEs recycling, as well as the feasibility and challenges associated with this process.

Application of Hydrodynamics Using CFD in Evaluating Efficacy of External Loop Air-lift Reactor Biochemical Leaching of Sea Nodules

Abhilash, Y. Usha, K. Seetharaman, Pratima Meshram, K. D. Mehta, B. D. Pandey

Summary: The study successfully utilized a Bacillus circulans-assisted biochemical leaching process to extract metals from sea nodules, finding that coarser lumps also yielded satisfactory results. Computational Fluid Dynamics and a multiphase mixture model were used to analyze mass transfer and hydrodynamics, leading to the successful extraction of copper and other metals.

Multi-response Optimization of Wire EDM of Inconel 718 Using a Hybrid Entropy Weighted GRA-TOPSIS Method

P. M. Abhilash, D. Chakradhar

Summary: This study presents a novel multi-criteria decision-making method for optimizing the process parameters during wire electric discharge machining of Inconel 718. By using a hybrid GRA-TOPSIS algorithm with entropy weights, the cutting speed is maximized while simultaneously minimizing surface roughness and flatness error to find the optimum parameter combination. The results show that the entropy weighted GRA-TOPSIS method improves overall process performance compared to conventional TOPSIS.

Extraction of REEs from Blast Furnace Slag by Gluconobacter oxydans

Abhilash, Sabrina Hedrich, Pratima Meshram, Axel Schippers, Ajay Gupta, Subhadra Sen

Summary: Bioleaching using Gluconobacter oxydans bacterium was investigated for the extraction of rare earth elements from granulated blast furnace slag. The results showed that a mixture of non-adapted and GGBFS-adapted culture achieved a maximum solubilization of 67% and 88% for Nd after 12 and 40 days of incubation, respectively. The increase in gluconic acid secretion by the bacteria contributed to the rise in metal extraction.

Solvent Extraction for Separation of 99.9% Pure Cobalt and Recovery of Li, Ni, Fe, Cu, Al from Spent LIBs

Pratima Meshram, Sami Virolainen, Abhilash, Tuomo Sainio

Summary: In this study, hydrometallurgical recycling of metals from high-cobalt-content spent lithium-ion batteries from laptops was explored. The purification processes of precipitation and solvent extraction were used. The results showed that the electrode material of the batteries contained significant amounts of cobalt, nickel, manganese, and lithium. By using precipitation and solvent extraction techniques, 99.9% pure cobalt sulfate was successfully synthesized from the leach liquor of the spent batteries.
