Organizational sustainability requires production systems improvement and adaptation simultaneously balancing environmental, social and business dimensions. This exploratory study investigates how quality management exploitation and exploration may ambidextrously contribute to support environmentally sustainable production development. The study uses data collected through an online survey from ISO 9001 certified manufacturing firms. Drawing upon organizational ambidexterity in management literature, and using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to examine the data, we develop a set of propositions that link quality ambidexterity to environmentally sustainable production. Results reveal alternative equifinal configurations of quality management practices that lead to environmentally sustainable production. All configurations combine quality exploration and exploitation practices. The consideration of multiple goals, and especially the requirement for cost efficiency, reveals tensions between the two quality learning modes. The study provides evidence that quality management ambidexterity, the simultaneous presence of quality exploitation and exploration practices, is an important determinant of environmentally sustainable production. The findings provide insights for managers on how to leverage organizational improvement capabilities to achieve sustainability goals.

Modeling cross-border supply chain collaboration: the case of the Belt and Road Initiative

Li Cui, Meihua Gao, Joseph Sarkis, Zhimei Lei, Simonov Kusi-Sarpong

Summary: This paper examines the influencing factors of cross-border supply chain collaboration in the context of the Belt and Road Initiative and proposes an assessment framework. The results show that senior manager support and customs regulation are important drivers of cross-border supply chain collaboration, while information sharing, profit allotment, the degree of trust, and goal congruence do not directly affect collaboration in this context.

Determinants of continuance intention to use mobile self-scanning applications in retail

Andreia Ferreira, Graca Miranda Silva, Alvaro Lopes Dias

Summary: This study examines the factors influencing the continuance intention of mobile self-scanning applications in retail, using data collected from an online survey of users in a large supermarket chain in Portugal. The findings show that user satisfaction and perceived usefulness directly drive the continued usage of the self-scanning apps. Additionally, technology readiness has a positive impact on ease of use and perceived usefulness, while ease of use has a positive impact on user satisfaction and perceived usefulness but no direct effect on continuance intention. Perceived quality has a positive direct effect on satisfaction and a positive indirect effect on continuance intention. Furthermore, the need for interaction has a negative effect on technology readiness.

Towards greener trade and global supply chain environmental accounting. An embodied environmental resources blockchain design

Xu Tian, Joseph Sarkis

Summary: International trade plays a crucial role in global sustainable production and consumption through global supply chains. The impact of environmental resource redistribution through international trade has been recognized in ecological research, influencing production and supply chain management in the long term. However, current trade and production accounting methods lack accuracy and reliability for policymakers and organizational decision makers to address global and supply chain trade issues. This study proposes a blockchain-based conceptual framework for accounting embodied environmental resources in trade, discussing framework design, benefits, challenges, and providing future research and theoretical implications. This study establishes a solid foundation for managing environmental resources at the intersection of international trade, sustainable production, and global supply chains.

Developing sustainable business models: local knowledge acquisition and tourism lifestyle entrepreneurship

Alvaro Dias, Graca Miranda Silva, Mafalda Patuleia, Maria Rosario Gonzalez-Rodriguez

Summary: The businesses of tourism lifestyle entrepreneurs (TLEs) are closely associated with sustainable business models (SBMs) due to their connection to the local knowledge. This research explores knowledge management in TLEs by studying how they acquire and integrate knowledge, and its impact on innovativeness and self-efficacy. The findings show that entrepreneurial communication has a direct positive effect on both innovation and self-efficacy, while a community-centered strategy has an indirect influence through entrepreneurial communication. Local knowledge assimilation plays a mediating role between the acquisition of local knowledge and innovation and self-efficacy.

Examining the impact of market power discrepancy between supply chain partners on firm financial performance

Jing Gu, Xinyu Shi, Junyao Wang, Xun Xu

Summary: The asymmetric market power between a firm and its partners negatively affects the firm's financial performance. Building relationships with suppliers or customers that have matched market power is the best approach. The strength of the buyer-supplier relationship amplifies the negative impact of asymmetric market power, while the level of relationship embeddedness reduces its negative effect. Moreover, firm-specific institutional, industry, and regional economic heterogeneities also influence the financial impact of asymmetric market power.

Learning efficient in-store picking strategies to reduce customer encounters in omnichannel retail

Fabio Neves-Moreira, Pedro Amorim

Summary: Omnichannel retailers are using stores as distribution centers to provide faster online order fulfillment services. However, in-store picking operations can impact the offline customer experience. To address this, we propose a Dynamic In-store Picker Routing Problem (diPRP) that minimizes customer encounters while fulfilling online orders. Our solution approach combines mathematical programming and reinforcement learning to find efficient picking policies that reduce customer encounters.
