Parabens are extensively applied in cosmetics, drugs or food as preservatives and have become common pollutants in environmental media. However, data on human exposure to these chemicals is still limited, especially for children. This study aimed to investigate parabens in urine samples of children and to evaluate the cumulative risk of paraben exposure. Five short-chain parabens were measured in 255 urine samples collected from children in a kindergarten and elementary schools from South China. Methyl paraben (MeP), ethyl paraben (EtP) and n-propyl paraben (PrP) were widely detected in urine samples (detection rates > 94.9%), indicating their widespread exposure. The urinary median concentrations of MeP, EtP and PrP were 2.25, 0.33 and 0.50 mu g/L, respectively. Significantly positive correlations (p < 0.01) were observed between MeP and PrP in urine, suggesting similar sources and/or metabolic pathways of these two chemicals. The median estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of parabens were determined to be 18.1 and 9.79 mu g/kg-bw/day for kindergarten children and elementary school students, respectively. Estimation of human intake and exposure risks indicated potential risks of PrP exposure for elementary school students. This is the first study addressing paraben exposure in South China children. Co-attention dictionary network for weakly-supervised semantic segmentation

Weitao Wan, Jiansheng Chen, Ming-Hsuan Yang, Huimin Ma

Summary: This paper proposes a co-attention dictionary network (CODNet) for weakly-supervised semantic segmentation using only image-level class labels. The CODNet model combines semantic information by jointly leveraging a pair of samples with common semantics through co-attention. It merges reference features through non-local connections by computing inter-sample similarities of spatially distributed deep features. The proposed algorithm, based on the CODNet model, generates semantic segmentation masks for a target image by merging semantic cues from multiple reference images.

New rhodamines with changeable π-conjugation for lengthening fluorescence wavelengths and imaging peroxynitrite

Haolin Zhang, Yanhui Xu, Hongyu Li, Wen Shi, Xiaohua Li, Huimin Ma

Summary: In this study, a new type of rhodamine derivatives based on dibenzo[1,4]oxazepine core was reported. These derivatives selectively react with peroxynitrite (ONOO-) to generate emissions in longer wavelengths. The synthesis of these derivatives can be achieved in one step through a similar Stieglitz rearrangement, and the presence of the 1,4-oxazepine ring was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray. The reaction product of one of these derivatives, ON-RB, emits in the near-infrared wavelength region, allowing the monitoring of ONOO- generation in macrophage-derived foam cells. The new chemistry of dibenzo[1,4]oxazepine ring formation and its specific reaction with ONOO- provide a convenient strategy for developing rhodamine-based probes with longer wavelengths.

Exploring a chemical input free advanced oxidation process based on nanobubble technology to treat organic micropollutants

Bangguo Wang, Lijing Wang, Wenxi Cen, Tao Lyu, Peter Jarvis, Yang Zhang, Yuanxun Zhang, Yinghui Han, Lei Wang, Gang Pan, Kaili Zhang, Wei Fan

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility and mechanisms of a chemical-free nanobubble-based AOP for treating organic micropollutants in water. The results show that the oxygen nanobubble AOP has a significantly higher removal efficiency compared to air and nitrogen nanobubbles. The treatment performance is not affected by pH and the presence of ions. Higher initial concentrations of the micropollutant lead to slower treatment processes, but similar removal performance is achieved in the end. The presence of organic matter reduces the removal rate of the micropollutant. The results have practical feasibility for water and wastewater treatment.
