Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the abilities of waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), hip circumference (HC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) to predict recently and previously diagnosed diabetes and hypertension and assess their appropriate cut-off values among Jordanian adults. Methods: Data from the 2017 cardiovascular risk factors survey were analyzed to achieve the study objective. The survey collected extensive data from a national population-based sample of Jordanian residents. A structured questionnaire was used to collect sociodemographic variables and clinical data. Blood samples were taken for biochemical measurements. Anthropometric characteristics were measured by the same team of trained field researchers. Results: This study included a total of 1193 men and 2863 women. Their age ranged from 18 to 90 year with a mean (SD) of 43.8 (14.2) year. WHtR performed better than other anthropometric measures and had a good ability (AUC > 0.80) among women and fair ability among men to predict newly diagnosed diabetes and previously diagnosed diabetes and hypertension. The appropriate cut-off points for anthropometric measures among women were 92 cm form WC, 104 cm for HC, 30 Kg/m(2) for BMI, 0.85 for WHR, and 0.60 for WHtR. For men, the appropriate cut-off points were 100 cm for WC, 104 cm for HC, 27 Kg/m(2) for BMI, 0.93 for WHR, and 0.57 for WHtR. Conclusion: WHtR performed better than other anthropometric measures in predicting diabetes and hypertension among adult population in Jordan. We recommend WHtR as a measure of choice with a cut-off value of 0.6 for women and 0.57 for men to predict diabetes and hypertension among Jordanians.

Vitamin D, Cholesterol, and DXA Value Relationship with Bimaxillary Cone Beam CT Values

Mohammed G. Sghaireen, Kiran Kumar Ganji, Kumar Chandan Srivastava, Mohammad Khursheed Alam, Shadi Nashwan, Fayeq Hasan Migdadi, Ahmad Al-Qerem, Yousef Khader

Summary: This clinical study evaluated the correlation between Vitamin D (Vit D), cholesterol levels, and T- and Z-scores of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans with cone beam computed tomography values in the maxillary and mandibular jaws. A total of 187 patients aged between 45 and 65 were included in the study, divided into control (non-osteoporosis) and case (osteoporosis) groups. The results showed a significant inverse relationship between Vit D and cholesterol in the case group, and a positive relationship between Vit D and cone beam computed tomography values in all regions of the jaws except the mandibular posterior region. Pearson correlation analysis revealed an insignificant negative association between Vit D, cholesterol levels, and cone beam computed tomography values in all regions of the jaws, while Z-values were highly correlated with the cone beam computed tomography values in all regions of the jaws. Vit D, cholesterol levels, and Z-values were found to be related to the cone beam computed tomography values of the jaws in women and men aged 45-65.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate the burden of tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer and its risk factors in the North Africa and Middle East region from 1990 to 2019. The results showed that TBL cancer caused significant deaths and had increasing incidence rates, especially in women. Tobacco use remained the leading risk factor. Controlling risk factors, particularly tobacco use, could significantly reduce the burden of the disease.

Summary: This study investigated the control levels of glycemic, blood pressure, and lipids among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Jordan. The findings revealed poor control rates for all three factors, especially the simultaneous control of all three. The factors associated with poor control included obesity, longer duration of diabetes, and specific medication types. Therefore, future research should focus on capturing all variables that may impact control and emphasizing the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

Summary: Anemia is a significant global health challenge, with variations across age, sex, and geography. The main causes of anemia are dietary iron deficiency, hemoglobinopathies and hemolytic anemias, and other neglected tropical diseases. Designing locally relevant health interventions based on these causes can help improve anemia management and prevention.
