A number of ninety-six hair samples from Sicilian fishermen were examined for total mercury detection by an Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) method. The mercury levels obtained were compared with mercury levels of 96 hair samples from a control group, in order to assess potential exposure to heavy metals of Sicilian fishermen due to fish consumption and closeness to industrial activities. Furthermore, the mercury levels obtained from hair samples were sorted by sampling area in order to verify the possible risks linked to the different locations. The overall mean concentration in the hair of the population of fishermen was 6.45 +/- 7.03 mu g g(-1), with a highest value in a fisherman of Sciacca (16.48 mu g g(-1)). Hair mercury concentration in fishermen group was significantly higher than in control group (p < 0.01). There was no significant difference in hair total mercury concentrations between sampling areas (p > 0.05). The results of this study indicate a greater risk of exposure to mercury in Sicilian fishermen, in comparison to the control population, due to the high consumption of fish and the close relationship with sources of exposure (ports, dumps, etc.).

Polyphenols and neuroprotection: Therapeutic implications for cognitive decline

Giuseppe Caruso, Sebastiano A. Torrisi, Maria Paola Mogavero, Walter Currenti, Sabrina Castellano, Justyna Godos, Raffaele Ferri, Fabio Galvano, Gian Marco Leggio, Giuseppe Grosso, Filippo Caraci

Summary: Dietary polyphenols have potential therapeutic effects in preventing or ameliorating cognitive decline, although human studies have yielded inconclusive and contrasting results. Anthocyanins consistently showed positive effects, while studies on cocoa flavanols, resveratrol, and isoflavones provided conflicting results. Other polyphenols showed promising but limited evidence.

The Cross-Talk between Myeloid and Mesenchymal Stem Cells of Human Bone Marrow Represents a Biomarker of Aging That Regulates Immune Response and Bone Reabsorption

Summary: One mechanism of aging in different organs is the accumulation of fat. Our study found that mesenchymal cells are replaced or transdifferentiated by other cells of the same embryological origin during aging. We also observed the presence of new adipocytes in the trabecular matrix of elderly people's bones. In elderly individuals, there exists a relationship between immature myeloid-derived suppressor cells and mesenchymal stem cells, which leads to immunosuppression and increased inflammatory pathways.

Summary: Some Procellariiformes, such as Calonectris diomedea, use stomach oil to feed their chicks, and the fatty acid composition of this oil changes during the rearing period. This study analyzed the fatty acid composition of C. diomedea stomach oil collected from Linosa Island, and found differences between the initial rearing period and the period near fledging. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the ecology and feeding strategies of C. diomedea.

First Report on the Presence of Toxic Metals and Metalloids in East Asian Bullfrog (Hoplobatrachus rugulosus) Legs

Emanuela Bacchi, Gaetano Cammilleri, Marina Tortorici, Francesco Giuseppe Galluzzo, Licia Pantano, Vittorio Calabrese, Antonio Vella, Andrea Macaluso, Gianluigi Maria Lo Dico, Vincenzo Ferrantelli, Mariagrazia Brunone

Summary: We examined the levels of As, Cr, Cd, and Pb in farmed East Asian bullfrog samples from Vietnam and Thailand using ICP-MS. The results showed high levels of As, with no significant differences between production areas. Cd was not detected in any of the samples, and the Pb concentrations were within the permitted levels set by the European Commission. The Cr and Pb contents were higher in bullfrogs produced in Vietnam compared to Thailand. The consumption of this type of food may pose carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks due to the elevated levels of As.

Dietary Fats and Depressive Symptoms in Italian Adults

Walter Currenti, Justyna Godos, Amer M. Alanazi, Giuseppe Lanza, Raffaele Ferri, Filippo Caraci, Fabio Galvano, Sabrina Castellano, Giuseppe Grosso

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between the intake of different types of dietary fats and depressive symptoms in Italian individuals living in the Mediterranean area. The results showed a negative association between moderate intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and depressive symptoms, while moderate intake of saturated fatty acids (SFA) was positively associated with depressive symptoms. Moreover, individuals with lower to moderate intake of short-chain and medium-chain saturated fatty acids had a lower risk of depressive symptoms. These findings highlight the importance of distinguishing between different fat types.

Summary: The increase in life expectancy has led to a higher prevalence of age-related neurological diseases, such as cognitive impairment, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease. This study aimed to examine the association between specific categories and subcategories of dietary fats and cognitive status in older Italian adults. The results showed that moderate consumption of certain types of saturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids was associated with a lower risk of cognitive impairment, while moderate intake of linoleic acid was associated with a higher risk of cognitive impairment.

Summary: Scientific evidence suggests a relation between dietary factors and sleep, specifically higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet is associated with better sleep quality. This study found that individuals with intermediate and evening chronotypes were less likely to adhere to the Mediterranean diet compared to morning chronotype. However, this association was weakened in older participants.

Anthocyanin Effects on Vascular and Endothelial Health: Evidence from Clinical Trials and Role of Gut Microbiota Metabolites

Samuele Laudani, Justyna Godos, Federica Martina Di Domenico, Ignazio Barbagallo, Cinzia Lucia Randazzo, Gian Marco Leggio, Fabio Galvano, Giuseppe Grosso

Summary: Hypertension and cardiovascular disease are major global causes of death, and increased oxidative stress and inflammation are associated with endothelial dysfunction. Anthocyanins, with their antioxidant and cardioprotective effects, have garnered significant interest, but their detection in blood serum is limited due to metabolism by gut microbiota. This review summarizes the main findings from clinical studies on the cardioprotective effects of anthocyanins, as well as the role of gut microbiota in their metabolism, bioavailability, and impact on microbiota composition. Further research is needed to clarify which molecules and doses of anthocyanins offer vascular benefits, while considering the crucial role of the microbiota.
