Bariatric surgery is an efficient treatment for weight loss in obese patients and for resolving obesity comorbidities. However, the mechanisms behind these outcomes are unclear. Recent studies have indicated significant alterations in the transcriptome after surgery, specifically in the differential expression of microRNAs. In order to summarize the recent findings, we conducted a systematic summary of studies comparing microRNA expression levels before and after surgery. We identified 17 animal model and human studies from four databases (Ovid, Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed) to be enrolled in this meta-analysis. From these studies, we identified 14 miRNAs which had the same direction of modulation of their expression after surgery in at least two studies (downregulated: hsa-miR-93-5p, hsa-miR-106b-5p, hsa-let-7b-5p, hsa-let-7i-5p, hsa-miR-16-5p, hsa-miR-19b-3p, hsa-miR-92a-3p, hsa-miR-222-3p, hsa-miR-142-3p, hsa-miR-140-5p, hsa-miR-155-5p, rno-miR-320-3p; upregulated: hsa-miR-7-5p, hsa-miR-320c). Pathway analysis for these miRNAs was done using database resources (DIANA-TarBase and KEGG pathway database) and their predicted target genes were discussed in relation with obesity and its comorbidities. Discrepancies in study design, such as miRNA source, bariatric surgery type, time of observation after surgery, and miRNA profiling methods, were also discussed.

Summary: Post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) is an emerging global crisis, and the quantifiable risk factors and biological associations are not well understood. In this study, a deep multi-omic investigation was conducted on 309 COVID-19 patients, and four PASC-anticipating risk factors were identified at the time of initial diagnosis. The study also observed changes in immune states during recovery from COVID-19.

Circulating Nucleic Acid-Based Biomarkers of Type 2 Diabetes

Felipe Padilla-Martinez, Gladys Wojciechowska, Lukasz Szczerbinski, Adam Kretowski

Summary: This review summarizes recent studies on biomarkers for type 2 diabetes (T2D) based on circulating nucleic acids using genomic, transcriptomic, and epigenomic technologies. Several candidate biomarkers have been identified for the risk and diagnosis of T2D, the prognosis of T2D complications, and the pharmacodynamics of T2D treatments. Further validation in larger samples and non-invasive samples is needed to support the realization of precision medicine for T2D.

Body Composition and Serum Concentration of Thyroid Hormones in Euthyroid Men and Women from General Population

Agnieszka Adamska, Andrzej Raczkowski, Zofia Stachurska, Marcin Kondraciuk, Adam Jacek Kretowski, Marcin Adamski, Irina Kowalska, Karol Adam Kaminski

Summary: This study investigated the relationships between thyroid hormones and body composition, as well as the distribution of fat in different regions. The results showed that in men, TSH was associated with visceral adipose tissue, while fT3 was positively correlated with total fat mass, android fat mass, and gynoid fat mass. These associations were not observed in women.

High-Fat or High-Carbohydrate Meal-Does It Affect the Metabolism of Men with Excess Body Weight?

Lucyna Ostrowska, Joanna Smarkusz-Zarzecka, Anna Muszynska, Edyta Adamska-Patruno, Maria Gorska, Adam Kretowski

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of a high-fat meal and a high-carbohydrate meal on energy expenditure, substrate oxidation, glucose, insulin, triglycerides, and homocysteine concentration in men with different nutritional statuses. The findings revealed that men with excess body weight metabolized nutrients differently and had different postprandial insulin secretion compared to men with normal body weight. Consumption of a high-fat meal increased the concentration of potential risk factors for cardiovascular disease in overweight/obese men.

Sebastian Solomacha, Pawel Sowa, Lukasz Kiszkiel, Piotr Pawel Laskowski, Maciej Alimowski, Lukasz Szczerbinski, Andrzej Szpak, Anna Moniuszko-Malinowska, Karol Kaminski

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a shift from in-person visits to telemedicine services in the healthcare system. This study examines how Polish patients perceive telemedicine in the context of the pandemic. Two surveys were conducted on a representative sample of the Polish population, allowing for an understanding of changing attitudes towards telemedicine over time. The study reveals both the need for adaptation to healthcare innovations and significant concerns that affect the perception of telemedicine.
