Summary: This study analyzed the clinical and laboratory findings of pediatric earthquake victims with crush syndrome in Turkey and found that elevated creatine kinase levels, body area crushed percentage, and increased phosphorus levels can predict the need for dialysis treatment, while time under the rubble is not indicative of dialysis requirement.

Summary: Due to the Russian-Ukrainian war, approximately 10,000 Ukrainian adults requiring dialysis fled their country to continue treatment abroad. A survey conducted by the Renal Disaster Relief Task Force of the European Renal Association collected data from 602 dialysis patients in 24 countries. The majority of patients received dialysis in Poland (45.0%).

Summary: During conflicts, people with kidney disease may face additional threats due to medical and logistical challenges. Acute kidney injury and treatment interruptions can worsen kidney function, and limitations in dialysis and availability of immunosuppressive medications increase the risk of complications. Local preparedness, adjustments in treatment, telemedicine support, and referrals to higher-level hospitals are important measures to address these challenges.

Summary: People living with kidney disease are highly vulnerable during natural or man-made disasters, particularly in war zones. The ongoing war in Ukraine highlights the importance of preparedness and support for this group. The European Renal Association has established a task force to help those with kidney disease in Ukraine, and this report summarizes the challenges faced and actions taken. The experience gained from this initiative can be used to improve preparedness and mitigate the effects of armed conflicts on the kidney community globally.

Summary: This study evaluated the risk factors for acute kidney injury (AKI) in pediatric patients with crush syndrome (CS) and developed a new scoring system for dialysis indication. Results showed that renal score, CPK level, and presence of myoglobinuria were the best markers for kidney replacement therapy (KRT) in pediatric CS patients.

Summary: The conventional literature and popular media often portray (Syrian) refugees as victims who need to cope with the traumatic experiences they encountered before and during their flight. The lack of seeking professional psychosocial help to enhance their mental well-being is often attributed to the fear of stigma among migrants. However, through in-depth interviews with 10 Syrian refugees in the Netherlands, this study reveals that their main struggle lies in the fragmentation of their identity due to displacement and the stereotyped narratives of Muslim/Syrian individuals as victims or terrorists. The findings show that Syrian refugee youths utilize strategic forgetting and remembering of both positive and negative memories to reconstruct their collective identity, employing counter-narratives of strength and competence to address their experience of identity fragmentation.

Summary: Disasters and accidents have been occurring more frequently in recent years, leading to mass casualty events and crush syndrome (CS) in many cases. However, our current knowledge and treatments for CS have not been updated for over ten years. This review aims to provide an overview and update on CS for prehospital providers and emergency clinicians.

Summary: Almost half of the forcibly displaced population in the world are children, mainly from Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Health disparities exist, especially in mental health, but they are not consistent across groups, time, or context. Despite exposure to trauma and stress, refugee children show remarkable resilience. Therefore, a holistic ecological model that takes into account both risk and resilience factors is recommended for understanding health disparities and implementing appropriate interventions for refugee children.

Summary: This systematic literature review examines the different animal models used in crush syndrome research and their benefits, providing valuable information for future studies. The review found that the two primary methods for inducing crush syndrome in animal models are chemical and physical methods. Various animal species have been used, with small animals more suitable for mechanism and efficacy studies, and large animals better for clinical application-related research. Compressing a specific muscle with heavy objects is the most effective method, but careful consideration must be given to the selection of appropriate anesthetics and analgesics due to the burden on animals.

Summary: The Queensland Paediatric Sepsis Program (QPSP) has developed a Family Support Structure (FSS) in partnership with consumers to improve care for childhood sepsis survivors. This innovative program includes online education and connection with other affected families, delivered by a multidisciplinary team. Evaluation and consumer feedback will continue to shape the evolution of this program.

Summary: Familial chylomicronemia syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by abnormal lipoprotein metabolism and high triglyceride levels. A study on a Syrian family revealed different expression patterns of the LPL gene mutation causing the disease, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and management to prevent serious complications.

Summary: Crush syndrome, caused by external compression and commonly seen in disasters like earthquakes and traffic accidents, is a wide-ranging syndrome with various clinical complications. It is the second leading cause of death in disasters and is characterized by hyperkalemia, myoglobinuria, and acute kidney injury. Early diagnosis and prognosis evaluation are crucial in reducing mortality rates.

Summary: This study aims to enhance the NTRU cryptologic system by increasing the number of operations through polynomial modules and isomorphism, augmenting secret keys, and selecting irreducible polynomials to expand public keys. By suitably partitioning and calculating chosen message polynomials, utilizing the algebraic structure properties of modules in operations and decryption, and incorporating prime number modules and polynomial modules into the system, this approach is deemed appropriate.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease is a significant health problem in Eastern Europe, with differences in prevalence and risk factors compared to Western Europe. Interventions such as raising awareness, early detection, prevention, promoting transplantation and home dialysis, implementing guidelines, and encouraging country-specific research are important for minimizing the impact of CKD in the region. Collaboration with non-nephrology European societies and patient involvement in research are also crucial for addressing CKD-related issues effectively.
